  I think Bill focused on the most extreme, but that isn't the point. It's hardly reassuring to defend religions by using those who take it least at face value, least literally as true, who espouse the most watered down versions.

  But, this statement is ridiculous: "My guess is that since their are intelligent Christians that can not only refute, but embarass Maher he does not want them on his show."

  Hardly. Maher treats Christianity, Judaism and Islam as just what they are, adult fairy tales. I'm sure there is just about as much chance of someone coming on Maher's show and defending belief in the Tooth Fairy as there is of someone coming on and "refuting Maher and embarrasing him" by defending these religions.

  Religions tend to embarrass themselves, with no need for help from outsiders and non-believers.

  In all my years as a JW, I never heard of anyone getting DFed due to gluttony. There are a LOT of heavy JWs.
  
  I knew the Don Amy CO/DO mentioned earlier. Many years ago.
  
  How to deal with the obese was at times discussed, but a lot of the thoughts on this thread were brought up, and it was essentially an issue too hot to handle, too filled with subjective ideas.
  
  Iloowy, might that be R&C you were referring to? Definite weight issues there. And they do love to eat out!

  World class actor, director, race car driver, family man and humanitarian. He lived a rich, rich life, remaining very fit, vital and alive until just these last few years with the cancer. Christ, he was a world class competitive race driver at 80!

  Newman, Steve McQueen and Robert Redford had quite an influence on teaching my generation what a man was.

  Newman even showed us how to age with grace and a burning desire to live to the limit, and to push those limits.

  Thank you, Paul Newman.

  ..sam stein... so, john mccain has reportedly paid more than $5,500 to tifanie white, the makeup artist who works on "american idol," for similar cosmetic services.

  it is yet another incident of a politician -- regardless of ideological stripe -- coughing up a lot of money for the sake of good looks.. earlier this cycle, one may recall, former sen. john edwards was subjected to days of ridicule over the fact that he had made two separate payments of $400 for two haircuts.

  leading the charge was the media -- keen on pointing out that a self-professed man of the people was spending the equivalent of a months rent, in some places, on personal grooming.

  As opposed to the non-metro, yellow-toothed, dandruff shedding, greasy haired look that is so much more natural and attractive.
  
  I'm chuckling here, buddy. Wanting to look good at any age is pretty normal. Most of us have a certain degree of vanity, and I would guess that politicians, people who are assuming they have what it takes to run the world's most powerful country (at the moment), just might have a fairly high degree of vanity!
  
  S4 - who gets a certain degree of metro-sexual shit from his co-workers! Though for me, the $17 haircut is plenty expensive! There isn't a 20X better difference between a $20 haircut and a $400 haircut for sure. Can anyone say "Ripoff."

  i taught seven pioneer schools, but in another country.

  I went. My instructors were Frank Hans and Terry Barnes, two great guys.

  also, a remarkable writer, david foster wallace, hung himself last friday.

  he was 46, gifted, and had long battled depression.

  Also, a remarkable writer, David Foster Wallace, hung himself last Friday. He was 46, gifted, and had long battled depression. There is a terrific tribute to him in today's NY Times.

  If there is one area where a LOT of the r&f JWs disagree with the WTS it's in this area of higher education. Especially after the easing up on the anti-education stance in the 1990s, and then coming back strong against it again in the past 5-6 years.
  
  I expect a LOT of JWs encourage their kids to go to college right now, despite the WTS's stand.
  
  It is a quiet rebellion.
