Hey, if I live that long and get stuck in that situation, I'll make the best of it. Old gals need loving too, and there will be so many of them!! And with the Alzheimer's patients, you can use the same pick up lines over and over. Same jokes too!
On the more serious side...My approach to life is strongly shaped by Taoist philosophy. I find it eminently practical. Basic to it is accepting your circumstances, not getting attached to things, and finding ways to enjoy what is at that moment without regretting or longing for what isn't. I've come to see that nostalgia, regret and sentimentality are very, very limiting.
I'm no longer young. I accept that. I love being the age that I am at whatever moment I'm alive. Most people have beliefs, very few have an actual philosophy of life by which they live and act. Understanding and applying the wisdom of taoist sages actually draws people to you. It is hard for me to imagine that anyone who lived in that manner would ever be lonely. I don't know why they spoiled taoistic thought by turning it into a religion. It's perfect for us atheists and free thinkers, as there is no god there at all. Even the Buddah told his followers to question every teacher, teaching and anything called a sacred text! If you meet the Buddah on the road, kill him!
