  back in the day, russell and rutherford would hold debates with other religious leaders.

  why has jehovah's witnesses stopped doing that?

  i think it would be very interesting to see how they would hold up on a debate now.

  i called a jehovah's witness friend of mine a couple weeks ago, yes i still consider him a friend though he would not say the same of me.

  i've known him for almost 40 years.

  our families went on many vacations together including my only trip back to bethel in 1996. this trip was made with 40 other "brothers and sisters.

  personally i think it is 1914 and the following " this generation " doctrine.. this particular doctrine went right against jesus's own words of " no one knows of the time not even he " .

  he also admonished his true followers to not set a time upon god's own sacred time .. the leaders of the wts even back to the late 1800's set a time calculated on their own theology 1874 being the first time set and proclaimed by c t russell, also proclaiming 1914 would likely be the year of the final day of judgment armageddon.

  all throughout the 20th century the wts held to this doctrine but was eventually revised of course when it was realized this generation had passed away who saw the events of 1914. .

  What is the inside info on "Reasoning From the Scriptures?"

  i understand why the witnesses won't actually "reason" from the scriptures; because they will have to come to grips with the fact that others have their own reasons, scripture-based, for believing differently than the jw's.. the "reasoning" book was supposed to arm the r&f with solid scriptural backing that could withstand most in-depth conversations.

  so, why is it gathering dust now?

  was there some doctrinal issue specifically?.

  The reasoning book stated the world was going to end by the end of the twentieth century or at least the end of the system of things. So there’s that not really a big deal unless your against false prophecies!

  we're both disfellowshipped, the difference between us being he is seeking reinstatement and i am not.

  we got into some very spirited discussions on different bible topics and one of them was the value of the new world translation itself.

  it really is common sense, but nobody here seems to recognize or acknowledge this blatant and obvious truth.. the holy bible is the result of the catholic liturgy.

  they used these scriptures in their religious practices and confirmed which books would and would not be part of their cannon.

  they picked, preserved and promoted these books and gave 'the word of god' to the world.. i know that pisses off some folks, but it is the truth [not the 'truth'tm].

  Why don’t you try and find a Torah older then the 6th century AD and then show me one that has vowel points older then the 10 century AD. Why don’t you do some research yourself TTWSYF. Why don’t you try and look past all the propaganda and lies and find some real truth before you go and judge someone else’s research or are you still just an ignorant JW?

  Actually I found this out studying what Jewish scholars say about the Torah. Again I’m not saying some of the writings in the Bible weren’t older just they were not in a Jewish holy book or collection yet. Many writing in the Bible are not even Jewish in origin. The flood story as one example is just a copy of an older Sumerian story. It suspected that the creation story is also Sumerian. The dispute between Cain and Abel is a retelling of two Sumerian gods trying to get the affection of the Sumerian sky god and he also picks the one that supplies the meat. I could go on but I think what really happen is popular stories of the time we’re just put together as a collection of writings and then were edited to promote one god. I also think the god Serapis was a model for what was later to be this new guy called Jesus.
