On every 4th of July. I always think of sister Martin from Arcadia, now dead. She asked one of the elders would it be a sin to watch the fireworks from my home or only if I drove to see them. She was serious. Even then I went down to the lake and watched the show. Douche nozzles they are.

Shot off a TON of Fireworks for the 4th of July, did anybody else?
by Dunedain ini just finally settled down for the night, as its 1 a.m. in the morning, est, right now.
i finally cleaned up my yard a bit, and a few friends that were over have left.. anyway, i bought about $1,000 dollars worth of fireworks to shoot off for the 4th.
i had sooo much sh%t, i didnt think i was gonna shoot anywhere near as much as i did, but, between me and 2 buddies, we shot off like 85% of it.. literally for an hour and a half we were shooting non stop, sometimes 3 or 4 heavy mortars at once, without a break.

I went to a concert and fireworks put on my the Walmart family. Bentonville. It was great. I don't buy fireworks. You are literally setting fire and blowing up your money.

Proof of God
by MrDantastic ini'm an atheist as i do not see any evidence for the existance of a god.
i encourage critical thinking in everyone and am ready to debate anyone on whether or not there is a god and what that god might be like.

You can not prove a universal negative. It is impossible for you to travel to every part of the universe and turn over every rock and say nope no god here. You are deluding yourself if you think you can. It does not matter what god you are talking about. Just as I can not prove there is not a gold tea pot orbiting Plut. I doubt there is but I can not prove there is not. I doubt god exits but I can not prove it. You can say you don't believe god exists but you can not say with any truth that you know. You don't know. Intelligent people know their limitations and you seem to not know yours. This objection comes up frequently.
The question 'can you prove there is no god?' is utterly meaningless because the word god has an endless number of meanings as we have already seen in this thread.
If somebody asked me whether I could prove beyond reasonable doubt that the god of Jesus does not exist I would not hesitate to say yes I can.
What people usually mean is 'can you prove that something that I could put the god label on and which I refuse to define in advance does not exist?' then the only sensible reply is 'go away and think about your question'.
Personally I don't believe in agnostics. They are just muddled about the question -

Yearly Donations down? 2.4 billion for the 2015/16 financial year
by Diogenesister inso people keep saying watchtowsr is in a financial mess.
i think we can all accept that numbers are stagnating at best and going down year on year in the north / western countries and japan.. however the recent finance dept leeks confirmed that following the may 2015 broadcast requesting more donations, an extra 30 million was sent in for the months of july/august.
stephen lett stated that this figure equated to a 30% increase.. lloyd evans has used this figure to work out how much is donated on a yearly basis worldwide.

Welcoming Our Latest JW Apologist JTrottigy
by pale.emperor ini'd like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome our newest jw apologist jtrottigy.
.
he'll likely only be here for a few days like most jw defenders before he runs away when presented with his own doctrine.. so far he's already said some hilarious stuff, like "there's no such thing as nepotism in jehovah's organisation", "confidentiality is paramount to elders" and, my personal favourite "the overlapping generation is so simple to understand".. yh don't think i don't remember you from jwtalk..

The over lapping gen is simple to under stand it just makes no sense and is so stupid and only works to extend the time line of failed prophecy.

Cain - where's the critical thinking skills?
by jws injust read a post on facebook where somebody is making some wild crazy-talk about the descendants of cain being the beast of revelation or something.. cain was always a strange tale to me.
don't people use any critical thinking skills when they read this stuff?
everybody knows cain killed his brother abel, but do they ever look at the surrounding tale?.

You are taking one point out of a book full to the brim of lunacy. From Jephthah to Jonah.

ExJW here also. I am not an atheist because I can not prove a universal Neg. It would take faith to say you are an atheist. I am an Agnostic. I can not prove there is or is not a god but since I have seen no evidence of one, I tend to lean that there is not. The strongest argument for god in my mind is the argument by design. Although I do not believe in the bible or any book of religion, there seems to be a lot of design in the diversity of life. But if god or some supreme being exists he does not seem to really give a shit about us.

Jehovah's Witnesses: shame and domination
by john.prestor ini want to suggest something that i've been ruminating on for a while now.
that involves the possibility that when jehovah's witnesses look for "sheep-like ones" what they're actually looking for is this: those who will allow themselves to be dominated (get rid of things that god "hates," accept the movement's beliefs without protest, not check into the movement's history) and those who are willing to be shamed (letting jehovah's witnesses into their homes when doing so is looked down upon in secular society, talking with them on the street when everyone else avoids them).. i say this because from what i observed at the kingdom halls i attended in the course of gathering data for my research i saw:.
-frequent shaming: jehovah's witnesses must do more to be acceptable to god, they are "good for nothing slaves," they are spared through armageddon by jehovah's "undeserved kindness," etc.

Sheep are easily lead to the slaughter. Not very good characteristics for humans.

Did you wait for something special to happen?
by stillin ini pretty much fell apart for about two years while i was looking at the religion through new eyes.
i prayed my heart out for two years, begging jehovah to clear a certain thing up that the elders and the organization had perpetuated.
this was supposed to be his spirit-led organization so getting things right in answer to possibly just one person's heartfelt prayers should be an easy task for the sovereign of the universe.

There are some good people in the cult. Some ass holes also. To stay in the cult you have to ignore any logic. Do as you are told and keep your head down. Some never open their eyes. And some know damn well its a load of BS but love the attention they get by giving talks and being elders that they really don't care about it not being the truth. My Grandfather was one of these. He knew it was BS. He knew about 607 BCE, He knew about the changes, Pyramids and more. When I found out his answer to me in private was even if this is not the truth its a good way to live. I knew then my GF was a fraud. Never had much to do with him till he died. His ashes and my grandmothers ashes landed on my door step. [ When my GM died he buried her under a tree in his yard, He asked when he died if his Nephew would bury him next to her. He did. My cousin bought the property and was digging up trees and found the bags of ashes. Asked who was buried on the land. I told him what he had found. He sent them to me and I buried them both on my Great Grandmothers grave [on my grandmothers side] Bought a granite stone and poured a small concrete pad and placed it under my GGM stone. Technically not supposed to do that but its an old cemetery and it was better for me to have closure and it does not hurt anything I know of.
