BTW I do not feel any guilt or obligation to them. I only worry about my wife. I know what its like. My father was a rel ass. He treated his boys like crap. He would loan money and buy things for people he knew but would not cross the street to pee on any of us if we were on fire. But I still felt like I had to help out when it was terminally ill. But if he had no money reserves I would not have paid a dime of my money to help. Time to help him was one thing but money no way. He was abusive as a parent, physically and mostly mentally. So I know that even though a parent can be a dirt bag you still feel for them. But I have pushed and worked very hard over my life. I am at a point where we are setting good for our retirement lookout but not if I start to take on others.

The sister and daughter are morbidly obese. I would bet in the 400 pound range. The daughter had a job at burger king and then she lost it. My wife said she only said it was because she did not get along with other workers. The sister was on disability but then was in a car accident. She got a settlement and lost disability because she had some money. Now she has tried for 2 years and can not get back on. I have no idea why. My wife's father bought a house that the sister and daughter live in the down stairs. The parents live in the refurbished attic. It has a closet, bath small very small kitchen and bedroom. My wife was there to support me when my father was passing away. But he had a good chunk of money to take care of him. I paid myself a small reimbursement for my out of pocket cost. My wife's parents did a semi cutting of ties because we left the cult many years ago. He was against us getting married back in 1980. Her brother is divorced and the sisters husband she meet at a quick build left her with her two kids. I don't feel like we should give a dime. I do feel bad for them but they have as Dickens so aptly put forged every link in the chain they carry. Her mother pioneered and father did what ever waiting for the end. I don't feel like we should put our retirement at risk in any way big or small because of their bad choices.

Circuit Overseer Pensions and the Implications
by AlanF ini just learned that the watchtower society has instituted a pension plan of sorts for circuit overseers.
this is a big change.. previous to this new plan, the various kinds of "traveling overseers" were pretty much on their own when they retired from the traveling work.
in a few cases, such men were invited to live out their lives in bethel, but in most cases they simply went back to being normal rank and file members who had to fend for themselves financially.. i can only speculate that the reason for this change was that the society has been having difficulty getting elders to become circuit overseers.

He moved to where the need was great to wait for the end. My wifes sister and her 18yo daughter moved in with them. Her father supports them all on 1700 a month Social Security. My wife feels bad for them but I had argued with them many years ago about saving for retirement and was told they did not need it as you all know the Big A was coming to wash all the problems away. I feel for them but they made their bed. Not sure what to do, my wife feels like she wants to help but we need to focus on our lives and future. I had worked 7 days a week and saved for years to get where we are at. I just don't want my wife to feel so bad.

Funny News From My Old Congragation - Elder Fight!
by pale.emperor ini haven't stopped laughing since i heard this.
a pimo in my last congregation told me that an elder has been removed from his elder position.
apparently he grabbed another elder by the throat, put him up against a wall in the back room and punched him in on the nose... during an elders meeting on thursday evening after the meeting.. the congregation were running round like headless chickens wondering what to do?

funny, who schooled who? The internet is a big thing. Some not all JWs do look at critical things about the JWs on the web. This was not available pre late 90s as the internet was just getting going. Now there are so many books and web sites and forums you don't have to feel alone. The JWs used that to keep people in line. They are still trying but its not working as well as past years.

What does shunning acomplish?
by poopie inwell in order to shun someone you must dehumanize them much like what occurred in slavery.
dehumanizing someone now allows you treat them worst then an animal.
and now you can justify ignoring them there not human anymore.

Fear, It keeps the rank and file in line. Can you imagine what would happen if they did not? You could go your own way and have your friends and family? The cult would fall apart.

A challenge to believers
by Half banana innothing is ever fixed, laws change and religious myth evolves.
no doubt the habiru (hebrew) forebears of the jews when arriving in the levantine highlands cherished their stone age practices and sacred rituals.
child and human sacrifice was a grim stone age social mechanism to make for balance, loyalty and control within a tribe.there was no connection then with an almighty spirit, polytheism ruled the hebrew mentality.

I am a 4th gen JW or was when I left in the mid 90s. I remember growing up in the cult its hard to learn critical thinking when you have not known it. Also we did not have the internet or the thousands of sites to show us the history. We had very limited places to look. Randy Waters was one of the first to have a site of former witnesses. Now its easy to jump on youtube and find history videos of the cult.
