I've said to my kids things like "If you don't watch you mouth you'll be picking your teeth up off the floor", "don't make me smack the living shite out of you".
Presumably you think it is OK to threaten physical violence?

i was coming out of the grocery store with a few items, and a round the corner comes a woman with 2 young.

recently i posted a thread that i no longer wish to take part in discussions here as i felt uncomfortable wt bashing.
however, i feel that i have to start posting if only from time to time as i am at a very different stage as i was only 4 weeks ago.
i know i haven't been 'disfellowshipped' from here, even though i've disagreed with forum rules recently or have i 'disassociated' myself from this board as i still feel myself drawn to it.. i'll try to be brief with this, but the content could be drawn out.. as some of you are aware i have been battling alcoholism or alcohol dependency as i prefer to call it now (thats another story).
Paul,
Individual JWs are nice people, generally. Unfortunately they're nice people who are in a cult.
Also I need to tell you that a man in the local congregation here who has been sober for years and who struggled with alcoholism for years, suddenly took a turn for the worse and started to drink again. Rather than helping him they disfellowshipped him.
JWs are not a group who will provide the best environment for recovery.

Paul,
Great news that you've been able to face up to the alcohol dependency.
One thing I would highlight to you is this: When you stop drinking there is a void in your life. Days are longer because they used to be spent in a haze of alcohol (or in ways to avoid the consequences of the last drinking session). So when you stop, you find that you need to fill your life with things which don't centre around drinking. You lose your drinking friends, which is a good thing, but it leaves another gap - and you look for friends who don't drink.
All of this can perhaps put you in a vulnerable position in the sense that you might see groups like the JWs as an option to fill the gaps in your life. They offer almost immediate "friends" and things to do!
First and foremost, I would say do anything which helps you keep sober. Alcholism kills. However, you need to protect yourself from other harmful addictions and I think that being in a religious cult is almost like having another addiction.
Aim for balance.

Sirona

this whole scenario is typical of the jw organisation sticking up for elders who do horrible things.. an elder from the anglesey congregation - one of 9 siblings - decided to join forces with one other sibling to make sure that the other siblings didn't get their inheritance.
he and his brother manipulated the matriarch of the family before she died, whilst she was gravely ill, and made sure that the rest of the family never saw the inheritance that was rightfully theirs.. he went so far as to restrict access to the house she lived in by changing locks etc.
so that her sons and daughters could not see her on her deathbed.. when she finally died, it was revealed that he and his brother had siphoned the money off and took possession of the property so that no other sibling could benefit.. they even had their own wake after the funeral service itself - to which the other siblings were not invited.. when this was reported to the co and congregation elders, they promised to investigate.
Core
Thanks for the information. I'm not one of the siblings....but I know them.
This guy and his brother profited thousands of pounds.
JWs protect their own don't they? Just cos he is an elder proves he is innocent, right?

Hi
This whole scenario is typical of the JW organisation sticking up for elders who do horrible things.
An elder from the Anglesey congregation - one of 9 siblings - decided to join forces with one other sibling to make sure that the other siblings didn't get their inheritance. He and his brother manipulated the matriarch of the family before she died, whilst she was gravely ill, and made sure that the rest of the family never saw the inheritance that was rightfully theirs.
He went so far as to restrict access to the house she lived in by changing locks etc. so that her sons and daughters could not see her on her deathbed.
When she finally died, it was revealed that he and his brother had siphoned the money off and took possession of the property so that no other sibling could benefit.
They even had their own wake after the funeral service itself - to which the other siblings were not invited.
When this was reported to the CO and congregation elders, they promised to investigate. After weeks of messing around, they informed the rest of the family that in their opinion he could remain an elder. The person who reported this was told to "shut up" and stop causing divisions in Jehovahs Organisation.
Many of the family are not JWs and therefore his actions have made it clear to all what JW Elders are REALLY like. Still the organisation didn't act to remove him from eldership due to scandal....presumably because the rest of the family live a few miles away so non of his Anglesey congregation know the truth about him.
This Elder sent an abusive letter to a member of the family who had simply asked him why he had acted in this way. This letter was presented to the elders as evidence. Nothing was done.
The family can't do much legally. They'd have to prove what occurred with the mother behind closed doors - before her death.
It makes me so angry. I wonder if any local JWs will know who I'm talking about?

or: "common responses to criticism, by active jehovah's witnesses", which i could also have called this topic.. .
-a video i just saw on youtube made by an active witness took me down memory lane a bit, and reminded me of how i used to think and respond to some common criticisms of the jws.
as i started writing this post, i had planned to put this person's thoughts point-by-point, but it turned out he was pretty much only covering one common critisism.
Could it be said that 'apostates' are too harsh, too strict and to-the-letter when it comes to what the FDS says, and that this is not how the average JW sees things?
Apostates pay more attention to the reality of the teachings and the impact they have on individuals.
Apostates are not too harsh. They are pointing out things which make a major difference to peoples lives.
For example, the extremely damaging teachings regarding blood and blood fractions SHOULD be analysed because these teachings result in deaths of JWs. Average JWs like to ignore these issues unless it happens to them or their family. JWs don't like to admit that deaths have resulted! but apostates can point to facts which show that JWs have died and that the whole blood issue is dreamed up entirely by the FDS.
Another example is the pedophile situation. Another is the FDS stance on higher education.
These things are not to be ignored and the average JW is certainly prone to putting their head in the sand. So when these things are pointed out, the JW responds that the apostate is being too picky or too strict.
Do you think an active Witness hears 'apostates' say "Well, they have to follow everything some old guys in Brooklyn says", and think to themselves, "Well, that's just not true, typical apostate lies and exaggerations." ? If so, would they have a point?
Apostates have lived the life of a JW and we KNOW that JWs are expected to follow all of the direction of the FDS. JWs who say otherwise are lying.
Example after example comes to mind. My JW brother turned down a fantastic job offer because of "advice" in a Watchtower article. My JW mother stopped doing Yoga because of an AWAKE article. I myself didn't go to university because it was "frowned upon" by the FDS.
The social pressure within the JWs is huge. If you disobey you can bet that some "well meaning" brother or sister will find the article for you and put you under pressure to conform.

Hi Rapunzel
Sirona, you write that "quantum physics teaches us that 'time' is illusory anyway." Could you please provide one single reference to support this claim?
Its my fault - I used the wrong type of wording. I should have said that our perception of time can be distorted; that it is subjective. From my limited reading, the way time is measured or perceived changes dependent upon other factors such as gravity, and therefore is not constant.
You also write that humans are beings who have consciously willed to incarnate and assume material existence in a physical body. Would you kindly be able to provide proof of that conjecture?
Of course not. That is why I stated very clearly in my post that it was my THEORY. If I presented it as fact then I could be challenged to provide proof.
