OK so have faith and reason but:
1. Dont ask questions of the society
2. All bad things about the org are apostate lies
3. Dont read any alternative religious literature or associate with those of other religions
4. You can reason, but only if you reason like we say
5. If you reason that JWs are wrong, then we will throw you out! you pig who returns to the mire!
i've just tossed out for recycling my nwt bible, greatest man book, book of bible stories, live forever book and other assorted jw memorabilia.
the house is less cluttered now with less shit hanging around.
you guys should do a spring clean as well.. .

i'm not a jw, never been a jw, and don't plan on becoming a jw...however my life has been effected by the jw's whether i like it or not (dad's death/mom's conversion).
seems most here are exjw's or jws...so i'm not too sure if i'm welcome or not?
I would say that you need to lay down some boundaries for your mother. You need to explain to her that you do not want her preaching to your children, since you are their mother and you are responsible for their spirituality (not her). You don't want her confusing them. Explain that when they are older, they can make their own decision, but until then you dont want her preaching to them.
Also, I would speak to her about respect. Calling your religion the whore of babylon is showing gross disrespect to you and your faith. I would approach it by saying that you respect her faith even though you dont agree with it, so she should respect yours. JWs do have a tendency to expect everyone else to respect them, while they walk around ridiculing those of other faiths.

Patio: thanks for the kind words, sometimes it does help to speak to someone who has also been diagnosed with something very serious (the c word). My melanoma is stage 2, and they're not sure if the lymph nodes have been infected or not. They can do a biopsy, but they also check every 3 months for development of lumps under my arms.
I'm going this afternoon to see the consultant and find out if I do need skin grafts, or if they'll be able to remove the extra skin and stitch it up again somehow. I'm glad you are now in recovery and things are clear, :)

Tina - its strange but even though you said your grandfather died, I appreciate that you understand the seriousness of it. Im getting really fed up with people trying to make me feel better by minimising it (sort of "oh it'll be fine, suchabody down the street had it and is OK now"). Anyhow, every case is different and I really believe I will be OK.

Simon...I keep meaning to meet up with you and your wife like you said, its just that I have a hectic schedule most of the time (full-time work, part-time degree, etc.) When my surgery etc is out of the way we should meet up somewhere one day, I will bring Richard. He is into going to the beach at the moment, so maybe something like that.

Its a very strange thing to be told you have cancer. However, I think that its harder for those around me than it is for me. I'd rather it be me than someone like my mother, or my boyfriend, or sister. They've cried about it more than I have.
I suppose I'm getting very deep here, eh?

Abaddon, no, unfortunately its the worst one - malignant melanoma. Im hoping it hasnt already spread to my glands, they're going to test.
I'm sort of OK but it was only diagnosed Feb 1st so Im still shocked. At least treatments are happening quick! I had the lump removed in Jan, then the result that it was cancer, then I had more skin removed (13 stiches in my arm) which unfortunately showed even more cancer. So now Im going in to have even more skin removed and that'll probably mean a skin graft. eek.
It'll all be done soon, and Im looking forward to vegging out in front of videos and eating lots of nice food! Then I will have a great time doing all the things that I always wanted to do (but never seemed to have time)...because I realised that you don't know whats around the corner. Live life today.

the march 1, 2002 watchtower contains a couple of articles on noah's flood and the application of this legend to "our day".
thrust of the articles is first to show that the flood was a real, earthwide event, and then to scare ignorant readers into accepting the jw message by claiming that our world is about to undergo a similar divine punishment.
pretty standard fare for long time jw observers.. in the past the watchtower society has published extensive material purporting to show that a global flood occurred a few thousand years ago.
In researching about Ancient Gods and Goddesses, a book I have "The Witches Goddess" by Janet and Stuart Farrar, suggests that one of the most worshipped Goddesses of the ancient world was Ishtar or Inanna, who carried with her a flood legend, years before the biblical date of the flood. Since the bible was written after this legend perhaps the bible writer was simply repeating this Ishtar myth.

Well it just shows how hypocritical they are...because I went to a wedding last year where the brides brother was DF and he attended, so did the brides parents who are JW and a bunch of other JW friends. I attended and had a great chat with the DF guy in full view of them all.
Shunning is OK when it suits them. There are not enough of my family who are JW to shun me, they live far away anyway. My mum is JW but I live with her so she cant really shun me.
