"The longer you guys play this fool's game the more he can make himself look important, and educated." Thats so funny.I've learnt that flag saluting is not law as I had thought it was, this was based on me reading about it so much it watchtower literature. "I knew what this person was up to early on." Thats funny because I didn't. Why so sensative?I havent made personal attacks on anyone here. If i ever go to the states I will love to stay with you both.Smiles. Little Toe you dont have Gaeilic TV do you up in the remote Islands of the North?

What are Americans taught about U.S and what do you really believe?
by sleepy injust wondering what exactly americans (u.s.a) are taught about their country in school .do you really salute a flag, do you swear allegiance to the country.
are you taught that you fought for freedom, and that america is the land of the free, etc etc?
do you actually believe what you are taught?

Sorry about the title, it?s just what came into my head at the time, and I?ve sort of wandered from there.
As to Welshness , and views on its nationalism, in sort I think its not worth it and I don?t actually like Welsh culture as it is too backward looking.
Welsh is the most heavily subsidised minority language in the world.
There are a small amount of people who speak the Welsh language mainly in North Wales, while most of the population lives down South and speaks only English and has done for hundreds of years and hasn't a clue about the Welsh language. All public signs have to be in both Welsh and English in the whole country, which is a waste of money for a language that is essentially dead. Yet Welsh has to be taught in Welsh schools and favouritism is shown to welsh speakers for education jobs. In England there is a TV channel called channel 4, in Wales this is replaced with SAC a channel in Welsh, yet hardly anyone watches it as the programmes are in Welsh, and are crap, as programmes are made because they are Welsh not because they are good.
This is all money down the drain that could be spent on more important things than preserving a minority language.
Basically a Welsh Nationalist country would have a minority rule. This is never a good thing it a bit like Cornwall (an English county with a small remnant of its own language) ruling England and the whole of England being forced to speak Cornish. -

"I find it more puzzling that you even care Sleepy' There are degrees of careing.I like to look at the things that may influence human behaviour without us being fully aware.strong nationalism has been a cause of world problems in the past and today. "Just because other nations may not have a flag salute, why would they even CARE if America does, or does not?' There are many people in america that do think it matters , thats why the laws on it have been changed.Nazi germay had a similair flag salute when it was in power, did this effect the people?.I believe nationalism can effect peoples beliefs systems and may stop them questioning their countries actions.Just the same as religious devotion ie JW's. " Is all the news over there all about America? Or are you basing this on a 30 second sound bite? " No its not, but issues relating to America such as Iraq are certainly world issues that feature in our lives.

Xena,I do belive you,I was confusing the past with the present. JW 's used to go to court for refussing to salute the flag , this has all changed and acommodation has been mad on religious grounds. I agree with you that every country has nationalistic people and government polices .I see I have made the mistake of not acknoweldging everybodies viewpoint which I do.I do want to know what you are taugh and i am listening. The internet for me is not like a conversation, i post in the middle of doing other things and I am not the best writter. The point is I am an outsider looking in , flag saluting and pledges of alligence just sound vey troubling to me. Do you not find it possible that people from nations were this does not happen may find it overly nationalistic?

Some states require that in publicly funded schools must the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America is recited in at least one scheduled class of every pupil enrolled in that school no less often than once per week. No student shall be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. They may abstain for religious reasons.
Can't find information yet on other reasons for absatining. -

Seams That flag saluting IS a matter of law after all.About half the states have laws encouraging giving alligence to the flag others also have a number of laws detailing what is required in regarding Flag saluting and the exceptions.Their are other requirment such as having the flag in the classroom, and reciting the national anthem.

"if you weren't proud of the fact you are welsh....you probably wouldn't have felt the need to point this out to me, you would have just commented on the point of my post...." No, the basis of the aurgument used was that I was English. It says I'm welsh in my details beside my posts.

Actually I'm agaisnt welsh nationalism, but thats a long story.I have no hidden adgender just like discussing "dangerous topics".I've never made the claim that other nations are not nationalistic, the point was that strong American nationalism often comes across in the media , more than I notice for other countries and want to know what the basis is.If you dont belive that this is a geniuine observation fair enough.I feel some people are reading far too much into what I've posted.I cant see how anyone can deny that saluting the flag of your country as a child cannot effect many peoples beliefs systems.Who said this would effect every one?

Oh crap !You mean, this is not the new system now! Could have sworn I heard a loud bang in a storm a couple of years back , just sort of assumed it was armagedon.
