I disagree with your idea that Rutherford was the one that was neurotic and tense. I believe that most of the "neuroticness" was introduced by Nathan Knorr and Fred Franz the handpicked successors to Rutherford. Perhaps other of Rutherfords associates but the explosion in rules was under Knorr and Franz.

Should Charles Russell be credited as the founder of Jehovah's Witnesses?
by slipnslidemaster inthis has been on my chest for a while and i would like to talk about it for a bit.
i've been reading this essay: "the successor problem" and it's sparked this thought that has been reoccurring to me for years.. .
i personally think that he should not.

It is surprising to me as well that they didn't distance themselves even more then they did in 1925-1928. I guess they think that they just couldn't get away with it or they would have tried harder.
I think it might be a fun project to research just exactly how much they distanced themselves from him in the publications over the years. There might be more there then it's generally thought.
I myself used Russell as an example of why I should be able to have a beard...him and Jesus...

I am wondering if there should be a concerted effort to "retrocon" this into ex-JW writings, etc.
I put forth that Russell founded the Zion's Watch Tower as a publishing company but founded the Bible Students as a religious group that exists to this day. I would also say that the Russellites would be a group tracing ancestry.
However, Jehovah's Witnesses should be stated as being founded by Joseph Rutherford, a splinter group of the Bible Students. It should also be stated that he seized control of the publishing company used by the Bible Students, unethically at best, illegally at worst.
The culmination being the corporation name changes circa 2000.

I personally think that he should not. Joseph Rutherford should be the "founder" of Jehovah's Witnesses due to his extremely questionable/illegal takeover of the Society upon Russells death and the subsequent name change in 1931.
Many members of the Internation Bible Students left after the power grab and many, many more left upon his denying that Russell was the faithful and wise servant from 1925-1928 when one of the dates was missed and Rutherford started damage control.
The Bible Students continue to exist to this day.
I think this is an argument to say that Russell was not the founder but Rutherford.

Who REALLY controls Jehovah's Witnesses..????
by Darkside999 inlet me begin by saying i was raised in a witness household.. now that i am older i like to question things and see where they really come from.
i always found it strange that so many people would blinding think they the society has any real power or knowledge.. first of all the origins are probably evil.
as russel was a 33rd degree mason, and founed skull and bones an evil satanic cult and jehovah's witnesses?

I think you are confusing Charles Russell with William Russell, founder of the Skull and Bones at Yale.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Huntington_Russell
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skull_and_Bones
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Taze_Russell
I'm not sure of Charles Russell's family tree, as he could be related to William but he was born to Joseph Lytel Russell and Ann Eliza Birney in Pennsylvania.
Regardless of his intentions to "control" anything, the Watchtower, Bible and Tract Society became a considerably different animal in 1916 when he died. Joseph Rutherford basically purged the Organization of any remaining Russell supporters, changed the direction of the existing doctrine and teaching and established quite an ironhanded control, continued by his two handpicked successors, Nathan Knorr and "The Oracle" Fred Franz.
Any remaining "control" was gone by the time the "committee" arrangement was created in 1976. Through political manuevering and I'm sure just plain ruthlessness, Ted "The Boss" Jarecz is the defacto head of the Organization to this day. -

In Memoriam
With you a part of me hath passed away;
For in the peopled forest of my mind
A tree made leafless by this wintry wind
Shall never don again its green array.
Chapel and fireside, country road and bay,
Have something of their friendliness resigned;
Another, if I would, I could not find,
And I am grown much older in a day.
But yet I treasure in my memory
Your gift of charity, and young hearts ease,
And the dear honour of your amity;
For these once mine, my life is rich with these.
And I scarce know which part may greater be,--
What I keep of you, or you rob from me.

My broker laughed yesterday when I purchased Sirius stock but even though I haven't called him in about 4 years, he still remembers me from my Internet stock picks in the 90's.
Oh and Sirius's stock symbol is SIRI.

What is so hard about http://watchtower.ca/????
Sounds pretty easy to me... and to 30 million other Canucks!
And the "Watchtower" part should be pretty easy for a JW to remember!
~Quotes, of the "don't see what the problem is" classI don't mean to insult but 90% of the population will remember the "watchtower" part just fine but automatically insert ".com" in their memories not ".ca". We've been trained for the last X-number of years to associate web addresses with .COM and not the other lessor TLDs. The bad part is that "watchtower.com" is a pointer to the official site. It's too risky. I totally agree with Randy on the message needing to be mysterious and not sarcastic. I guess my sarcasm was coming through way to thick. I was trying to think of clever, eyecatching phrases but his is good. Bethel in Trouble www.watchtower.ca would be good...

I think this is one of the best ideas that I've heard in a long time. Those stadiums are BORING during the conventions and a plane with a message would TOTALLY get read.
However, it needs to be short, catchy and the website mentioned has to be easy to memorize. Nobody is going to write it on their programs or notes you know... but they just might remember the URL and look it up in the privacy of their own homes.
I think that www.freeminds.org is catchy...I think that you should try and get .com because most people remember the www and the .com part but .org is hard to remember. But even still, www.freeminds.org is short and rememberable. I wish that Quotes website had an easy to remember URL. That is a GREAT site.
I would donate to a plane or two.
What about:
1.) "New Light on Blood - People Die" www.freeminds.org
2.) "Did You Scream - New Light on Rape" www.freeminds.org
3.) "Armageddon - 1914, 1919, 1925, 1975 OR 2035?" www.freeminds.org
I think this is a great idea!!
