smiddy3, the organization 'sells' them in the sense that JWs will make donations after receiving their 'free' copies, is that what you mean? I don't have a good sense of how that side of things goes.

Are the G.B.members really good business people ?
by smiddy3 inif i was an author of a book i think i would be over the moon if i was guaranteed a sale of around 5 million or more books for my work.. the jehovah`s witnesses have over 8 million members plus relatives that are fringe dwellers who come to the memorial once a year ,.
so what a gold mine they have been sitting on as a publishing house .. why didn`t they keep publishing books for the faithful ,they could have even upped the price , and the faithful would have paid especially in prosperous country`s in the west.. they could have milked this venture for years to come as the faithful would have bought anything they would have published .. and their prophets (profits) would have soared ,literally and figuratively for many more years to come ..

No, they're not. As other posters have pointed out the organization had a 'brand' of religion throughout the 20th century thst 'sold' pretty well, 8 million members is nothing to scoff at. But that brand has become stale: they now rely on the children of existing members to keep existing as an organization, and yet they offer nothing to kids or teenagers, for instance, in the way of youth groups that would keep them interested and connected and coming back. They also ask 'young ones' (their very term for non-adults sounds like they still think they're in the 1950s) to make all kinds of sacrifices at school as far as a social life and sexuality go. So about 2/3rds of children leave by adulthood, and really, who can blame them even just on non-religious grounds?
Does the Governing Body do anything about that? Not really, they put out 2 minute Caleb and Sophia cartoons that are either creepy (Sparlock, dying for not paying attention at meetings), set kids up for embarrassment and isolation (telling classmates that their mothers (pl.) won't get into paradise, like that's gonna go over well), or the same old message kids hear at the hall every week (preach, dress up, obey the Governing Body, give the Governing Body your ice cream money).
The Governing Body is going down with their own ship.

JW elders stumped by Watchtower Publications
by Roger Kirkpatrick ini was approached by two jehovah’s witness elders who handed me a pamphlet advertising the jw .org website.
each man carried a bible and an apple ipad.
they told me that they enjoyed visiting with people about the bible, and asked if i was a bible reader.

We're all adults here aren't we, Mace.Bean? The OP claimed it happened. It doesn't sound like it happened. That's all we're saying. Maybe you should work on "tact" in your next talk.

Mo Money ... $$$
by loneranger inthe money grab continues!!
at a very recent circuit assembly (usa), the accounts overseer gave the typical accounts report for the ca in the early afternoon.
there were 2100 people at the assembly.

loneranger, were you there for that? I can remember sitting in the audience at assemblies wondering why the "expenses" were so high (usually 10k for a weekend), but I've never heard/seen anything like that.

Conventions
by Holden Caufield inwhat did you make of the conventions i used to dread them.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6bhlhtbaos.

I can't believe conventions used to go for 8 days (when was that until?). A person can't retain that much information all at once. And what is there to even talk about after a day or two of talks and "dramatizations"?

I'm with crazyguy, I doubt this happened either. In my experience Jehovah's Witnesses change the subject the second they get the slightest hint you're "winning" the argument and/or get passive-aggressive and hostile. The ones you talked to stayed remarkably calm and on topic.

What Are Ways You Can Tell Someone is a Jehovah’s Witness?
by minimus inis it something they do?
how they say things?
how do you spot a jehovah’s witness?.
-

I'm with minimus, some Jehovah's Witnesses do come across as smug. I've had Witnesses sorta smirk at me in discussions when they thought they had the upper hand.
I've also been able to pick them out at a coffee shop or diner by their outfits, in Upstate New York Brothers always seem to be wearing grey pinstripes with colorful shirts and ties (don't know if that's true elsewhere). Then I'd listen in as I was having breakfast with my family and hear them talk about the latest Watchtower or someone going out west to "unassigned territory" and now I'd guessed correctly.
I've never figured out someone was a Jehovah's Witness by what I'm about to say but it's worth mentioning that in my experience no one but Jehovah's Witnesses talk about "Bible books" or use "Bible" as an adjective for that matter ("we learn Bible truths"), other Christians tend to say "books of the Bible" and "biblical truth."

Coming out of the Woodwork
by Solzhenitsyn inwho was i to think that we would be left alone?
it has been a dream for 2+ months.
a few calls i let go to voicemail but now the wife and i are getting bombarded with text messages.. this isn't going to be easy.. since we're not looking to throw a grenade into decades of relationships, text replies thus far have been..."thank you so much.".

Just know this: if you don't want to respond, don't. You don't owe them anything. It's hard for me to take that kind of advice even as I'm giving it but it's something I've gotten better at and trust me, it helps.

Whenever I hear that phrase, "Jehovah's loving organization," it creeps me out. People love. Corporations don't and can't by definition. -
