  Rec'd a letter from my Dad - need some advice...

  fader here - last meeting was in autumn 2005. lurker on this site and others.

  not one to get all controversial.. typical situation, pretty much a born in and left the church at age 38 and never looked back.. i'm 53 now, parents getting older - late 70s but very active, dad is still an elder.. parents, in laws, brother and brother-in-law still uber active jws.. my family (wife and 2 adult children) out since 2005.. we have stayed close to our parents - we have treaded religion lightly and have had a pretty good relationship and have kept our personal lives and beliefs/opinions separated from them.

  this was intentional - as we love them and do not want anything to cause shunning since they are getting older and want to be there for them and we respect their beliefs.. got this letter today.

  They are the ones that do the shunning, destroying family relationships and friendships, and then they have the gall to act like the injured party.

  Obviously we do not believe that JW’s have "the truth," but we love you and would never cut you off or shun you because family is important to us.

  We would also never try to lay a guilt trip on you or emotionally blackmail you in an effort to make you conform to our beliefs or make you pretend to believe things which you don’t. - (See Awake!, July 2009, p. 29)

  a friend of mine told me about a huge elders meeting in southern california.

  the subject was the relocation and dissolution of some congregations; it seems that this is the result of some project that has been going on for some time and is going to be implemented right now.. please let me know if this is happening all over the country?.

  FedUpJW: Of course 99% of people these days would fail even the most basic of grade school level civics classes.

  Says a person that is completely wrong about the process.

  Jesus fucking Christ. Read the goddamned US Constitution. It's not that long or hard to understand:

  1. US Constitution: Article I, Section 2, Clause 5 - Impeachment: "The House of Representatives ... shall have the sole Power of Impeachment."

  YES: Trump has been impeached.

  NO: He has not be tried by the Senate so we don't know yet if he'll be acquitted or convicted (HINT: Mitch McConnell has already publicly stated that there won't be a fair trial. So there's that.)
  

  Deal with it. And please, for chrissakes, stop saying stupid shit that's just plain wrong. It doesn't help!

  Doctor Who: I don't deny climate change. What I deny is the influence man has on it.

  How do we know climate change is real and that much of it is due to human activities? That's a great question. As a science teacher, I would encourage you to examine the evidence, of which there is plenty (NASA: "Climate Change: How Do We Know?").

  Interesting thread, Terry.

  People are often wrong. That is why scientific methods are so important; they are inherently self-correcting.

  Peer review is an essential part of the process, unlike say religious proclamations and edicts which are not allowed to be questioned.
