  we want people to learn ttatt.

  we have numerous resources online to draw jws in so that they will wake up.

  however, i've noted some radical methods that have been used by fellow exjws, and quite frankly, this must stop.

  at one time scientists believed that living things and non-living things were made of different material, accounting for the unique properties of living things.

  this idea is called vitalism and is no longer popular.

  what does remain popular (in fact is still the dominant view) is a similar idea that things that experience the world (humans, frogs, mice) are different from things that don't experience the world (potatoes, rocks, snowflakes).

  The phlogistion theory is of course now completely discredited, mostly due to the work of Antoine Lavosier, the father of modern chemistry, in the late 1700s.

  It's a very interesting example of how science works. Even as more and more evidence was gathered to disprove the phlogiston theory, many people stubbornly continued to hang on to it rather than admit they had a wrong belief (sound familiar?).

  Here is a brief excerpt from a WP article on the subject:

  Phlogiston Theory - Challenge and demise: Phlogiston remained the dominant theory until the 1780s when Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier showed that combustion requires a gas that has mass (oxygen) and could be measured by means of weighing closed vessels. ...

  Experienced chemists who supported Stahl's phlogiston theory attempted to respond to the challenges suggested by Lavoisier and the newer chemists. In doing so, phlogiston theory became more complicated and assumed too much, contributing to the overall demise of the theory. Many people tried to remodel their theories on phlogiston in order to have the theory work with what Lavoisier was doing in his experiments. Pierre Macquer reworded his theory many times, and even though he is said to have thought the theory of phlogiston was doomed, he stood by phlogiston and tried to make the theory work. [Emphasis added]

  I do NOT object to your posting. I object to your personal comments directed to/at me.

  Agree or disagree with a view. I don't care. Attacking beliefs or ideas you feel are incorrect is fine, but it is both poor form and against forum guidelines to engage in personal attacks.

  i know who you are; you posted, rather eloquently, on venus' thread regarding a teacher making a mistake in mathematics.. my brain is not wired to explain concepts that come to you naturally.

  certainly, it is a combination of both your innate ability as well as training in a field in which you excel.

  my question centers on those of us who did well in mathematics but cannot explain what we are doing.
