The whole thing was like a runaway train that no one
desired to stop. People sold homes, put off medical
and dental care and missed further education.
I didn't buy into it though, I kept remembering Jesus'
words: "No one knows the day or the hour".
i have just finished reading watchtower of aug 15th 1968.
( i was still there then) i couldnt believe what i'm reading & i qoute.
"are we to assume from this study that the battle of armageddon will be over by the autumn of 1975 & the longed looked for thousand year reign of christ will begin by then?

some years ago, i knew a brother with mental problems.. oddly enough, he managed to own a house and car on a. disability pension.
i wondered how he survived on his.
visiting his house, i found that he made written.
TO MUSTANG:
They were called Testimony Cards. They had a printed message on
them for the householder to read. The householder was supposed
to hand them back, but many times would keep them thinking
the J DUB was deaf.
in my hometown, this other witness and i were.
going from door to door one day when we reached one particular house.. the householder became so agitated by the presence of jws.
that he "sicked" his dog on us, but thank god it had a muzzle.
Maybe I just wasn't listening, they were inviting me
in for coffee...haha

I was a teenager, two old toothless ladies chased me
from their doorstep. They were so mad they were actually
foaming at the mouth and speaking gibberish (tongues)
i just read a post on another site i belong to (non-jw related) where a person asked if anyone knew why jws do not have windows on their kingdom halls.
a few other people responded saying that they had noticed the same thing, that they thought it was b/c the jws believe that windows are just an adornment, hence a distraction?.
in my 20+ years of being a jw and attending quick builds, i never noticed this ... it never even dawned on me ... and now that i try to think back, i can't remember there being any windows at the khs i attended?.
Actually, vandalism is one concern. A KH I attended built in 1950
had 6 large windows. They were the old steel crank out type with
many small panes. I recall times on warm Sundays they were open, it
gave a nice airy feeling to the barn-like bldg. Over the years though, the neighborhood went downhill and we got tired of fixing
windows due to rocks. The first major remodel saw the windows go.

Beautiful..thank you.
part 11: the amalgamated wedding .
by now, tensions between the elders and me had subsided.
we were gearing up for the wedding.
TO AMAZING,
Please post pictures!
harmageddon was supposed to occur in the fall of 1975, but nothing happened.
who should have taken the blame?
the gb?
As one who lived thru it all, it was not the rank and file JW. Although I did not fall for it because "no man knows the day or the hour", the whole substance and energy of the organization focused on
1975 as being the end.
In addition DO's & CO's whipped up the hysteria and apparently were
not muzzled by Brooklyn. Publishers were commended when downsizing
their lives. Some sold big homes to move into smaller ones, others
sold small homes to move into mobile homes, others contemplated
moving from mobile homes into travel trailers.
I have heard elders to this day say "the Society never said the end
would come in 1975". In a strict legalistic way of wording, I
suppose they didn't, but all circumstantial evidence points that
they did.
Oh, and just for the record, at a DC that I attended in the late
'70s, Milton Henschel apologized for the whole thing publicly.
i have read a couple of threads the last couple of days that dealt with what you have to give up when becoming a jw.. most posts that i read said they have to give up getting a higher education.
my question is this: is that still a trend today?
that elders frown or discourage young jws from going to college or university by telling them to put kingdom's interest first?
I graduated HS in the early 70's. College a definite
NO-NO.
My kids graduated in the 90's; college still a stigma, as I
discouraged it due to my upbringing and all the aformentioned
negative connotations connected.
Looking back I wish I'd given them the chance.

Let's put it this way. At a recent circuit assembly a
young person interviewed on stage was praised because she turned down
a college scholarship to pioneer.
