I'd be wondering why the hell the God of the Old Testament is completely different from the God of the New Testament... (bipolar disorder?)

Thanksgiving??
by HereIgo inwith thanksgiving around the corner, i thought it would be interesting to hear how you, your family or other jw's you knew handled/celebrated thanksgiving.
it seems to me that most jw's view it as harmless and unofficially celebrate it the day before or the day after the actual holiday.
growing up, my mother would host a dinner the day after thanksgiving and used the excuse " well the traditional food for the dinner is discounted at this time, might as well have a dinner".

Thanksgiving around the corner...? Wasn't it on October 10? A month ago?
Edit: Sorry, didn't know there was a different date for Thanksgiving in the USA...

contradictory statements?
by aboveusonlysky ini'm always interested to hear what a 'spokesman' for the organization has to say when newspapers report on child abuse issues.. for example the following statement was made in a recent guardian article.
a spokesman for the jehovah’s witnesses said: “we are in no position to, and neither would we wish to, force any victim of abuse to confront their attacker.”.
and this is straight from the shepherd the flock book -.

There was a letter a few months ago that updated these policies. Victims of sexual abuse no longer have to meet their abusers on Judicial Committees. It is possible that this is why this spokesman said that. He could mean that although victims in the past were forced to meet their abusers, they no longer have to today. They're basically like politicians, avoiding harmful (to them) information.

RUSSIA: Many meetings raided and evidence planted
by ZAPPA-ESQUE inraids on jehovah's witness premises now take place more than three times per month.
these raids on doctrinally pacifist* religious communities often involve many heavily armed and camouflaged officials, with the "discovery" of apparently planted banned "extremist" literature.
legal dissolution of communities can follow.. http://www.forum18.org/archive.php?article_id=2228.

Too bad they aren't doing it because of their shunning practices or child sexual abuse cases... Then, at least, the world would know they deserve it.
Having that said, I still feel a bit sad about those Jehovah's Witnesses that are innocent who'll get punished for nothing more than just being gullible and believing the Governing Body... But well... what can you do?
Although I still doubt Russia will get anywhere with that approach...

Another Outright Lie Published 2/17 WT
by LostGeneration inthis info is from the article "who is leading god's people today" feb 17 study edition.. to help them disseminate bible truth in various languages, zion’s watch tower tract society was legally incorporated in 1884, with brother russell as president.
* he was an outstanding student of the bible, and he fearlessly exposed as false such doctrines as the trinity and the immortality of the soul.
he discerned that christ would return invisibly and that “the appointed times of the nations” would end in 1914.. pretty sickening article overall about how badass the gb is, though this little gem is printed as well, paragraph 12. the governing body is neither inspired nor infallible.

The Governing Body is neither inspired nor infallible. Therefore, it can err in doctrinal matters or in organizational direction.
Am I still going to be disfellowshipped for believing that the Governing Body makes mistakes?

Your feelings for the former travelling overseers
by Hecce induring our wt life we met a good number of friends involved in the circuit and district work.
i am sure that we share the same experience and that we remember fondly some that we caring, loving and generally interested in the brothers.
at the same time we might remember others that were arrogant, selfish, abusive and oppressive.

That's interesting. Every elder and CO I knew was very kind, albeit gullible also. I guess I was lucky.
But they would still shun anyone who got disfellowshipped, etc...

If Jehovah is our 'father', he would want humankind to independently govern itself
by fukitol inall parents want their children to grow up, mature, and become happily independent.
no normal father or parent would ever want to govern and rule over their children forever.. so if jehovah exists and he is a heavenly 'father' to his human progeny, and if we truly are in his image as his children, then humankind was always destined to govern itself.
if you believe in the biblical narrative, jehovah always intended to let go of his human children and let us rule ourselves when we were ready.

You forgot about one thing. In Jehovah's Witness theology, the analogy of a relationship between a father and a son extends only to the concept of free will and punishment. You cannot use the same analogy to justify other concepts. Sorry, Jehovah's Witnesses win.

So today (just now) I heard about the Asia Bibi blasphemy case. She was arrested in 2009, I believe, for blasphemy and was then sentenced to death. As far as I know, she has not yet been executed. Her Wikipedia page still shows her status as alive, and any recent news I found are from October 13 when it was announced that the case was delayed by Pakistan Supreme Court.
I have no idea whether she is still alive after those 9 days, but I don't want to risk it. In case any of you have not heard of her, please sign the petition linked below to save her.
Asia Bibi Blasphemy Case Petition
Still, what will happen if she is released from prison? Islamists (that is, not all Muslims) in her village and in the whole country demand her death. If she is not executed, she will be murdered by those bloodthirsty beasts. So the big question is... What happens after?

What happens to the elders?
by Worldling9 inwith so many khs closing and congos consolidating, what happens to the elders?
clearly there won't be a place for all of them.
would the older ones be the first to go, losing their long held positions of 'power'?.
-
Saename
Well... Older elders were admonished to start teaching the younger ones so that they could "retire." At least it happened in my congregation before I left—that is about four months ago.
