My Story: from JW Elder to Born Again Christian to Agnostic
by passwordprotected ini first posted here on 3rd june 2008. at the time i was an elder, appointed the previous october, i was 36 and i was a born-in.
at the time i'd become disillusioned with the society due to the governing body's letter explaining why the book study in private homes was being abolished.
april 2008 saw me start questioning this decision, privately of course, and this eventually led me to this site, to jwfacts and to many youtube videos, all of which began to errode my faith in the leaders of the organisation.. in july 2008, having discussed my doubts with my wife, i attended the district convention, deciding to give the society one last chance to convince me it was the truth.

I can't believe they even put this card on their site, it just shows everyone how crazy they really are.

A lot of very interesting points have been brought out. I really hope she wins this appeal and I agree with sosoconfused that I would love to see them reinstate the original monitary award. It makes me sick what they have allow when it comes to children in this organization. Someone said they should be put in jail for this and I agree. They are getting off too easily if they do not get prision time for allowing a known pervert to take a child out of the KH. There were Catholic priests that were sent to jail for their actions it is time the men who are in positions that allow this to happen should be held accountable. Another thing that really bothers me is the fact that the national news is not reporting this. I know the majority of JW's will not pay attention but you just never know what will make someone open their eyes.

Should I just DA or get DFD?
by Julia Orwell inmy never-a-jw dad told me today that mongrel jws who turn on me were never truly my friends and i'm better off without them, so why worry if i get disfellowshiped?.
i fear being disfellowshiped because my name will be dragged through the mud.
i also think it might be a good idea to da or get dfd because then the link is broken and the fade is over.

Why play their game? Live your life and enjoy your new found freedom! I struggled with DA myself too but in the end I would be playing their sick game. I personally made the decision to not answer the door or phone and am on my way to building new friends. I decided that if they called me for a meeting I would not attend and at that point I would write a DA letter because it is going to be on my terms not theirs. I deleted all JW's from my FB except two and one I may do very soon. The other one is an emotional wreck and I am only leaving her because I may be able to help her out other wise I would delete her too. There are very few ex-JW's that can hold on to former "friends" in the hall.
Julia, I had terrible health problems and some of them still exist but I realized that a lot of it was caused by the cult and I made the deicsion that my health was far more important than hanging on to people that were toxic for the most part. Yes I miss a few of them but it gets less and less as time goes on. Take care of your mental health because it can cause your physical health to suffer greatly. They are not worth it!
We have been out for almost a year and when we started this journey both of made the decision to not rush into anything. Because we did this we have not regreted anything so far. I think you will find the same thing if you sleep on it and don't make any rash decisions. They may leave you alone and you can go on your merry way.
I also like Punks advice, live your life as if they didn't exist and that is what I am trying to do. We get some knocks on the door but we look out and if it is a JW we don't even answer. I have had one call from an elder around the memorial and I ignored the phone. I am only doing what they have done to us and it is on my terms not theirs!
At first I worried about what everyone would think but now I could care less. I think you will get to the same point real soon. You will want them out of your life because you have very little in common with them now. I don't want to listen to the recap of meetings and conventions because that is all a lot of them talk about. I am not going to let anyone try to make me feel guilty which is one of their tatics.
You are like me and have no family in, so for me that has been wonderful. My relationship has improved now that I am away from it and that is one thing I have worked on since leaving. I lost a lot of time with my family because of the cults stupid control.
Hang in there and it will get so much better.

My JW Experiences and Living in No Mans Land
by wizzstick inlots of proper pioneering (90 hours), lots of calls, lots of studies, lots of interest.
enough to make it all interesting.
driving this buzz was the sense that armageddon was imminent.. my father was never a jw, and was very opposed.

I have to agree with goatshapeddemon, because the more you search and study books and whatever you can get your hands on you will find that some of the beliefs you think are correct are not. I know I have gained so much knowledge from searching. Research the particular subjects like preaching and see what they did back in Bible times and some of the other beliefs and see where they came from and what the Bible truly says. The WTBTS has a way of presenting snipits of Bible verses but when you read everything around it the meaning is totally different from what they teach. I was talking with someone yesterday about the JW's and he couldn't understand where some of the beliefs came from and I said they take a portion of the scripture and use that and his comment was, "It is similar when someone takes a text message and pulls out a small portion of it and it has a totally different meaning than if you read the whole comment". That made so much sense because how many times does something get blown out of proportion in a news report when they just take a small part of the comment. Keep reading and you might want to reread C of C now that you are an adult, I think it was you that said you read it while a teen and also read Steve Hassens book because it will help you to see another view of the WTBTS.

Public Apology & Amends
by Cephyr13 ini was in this forum breifly about 7 years ago.
probably no one remembers me, and the people back then probably aren't even still here...but i need to make an amends anyway for what i did.. i've been in recovery (12 step) for a couple of years now to deal with my behavior issues.
in other words, i try to make right what i've done wrong to others.
-
Auntfancy
I wasn't here then either but I think it is great you are getting your life on track and I wish you happiness and success with your recovery. Even though we don't know most of the people on this board in person it still takes a lot of courage to come out and apologize to others. Once you have done making your amends it is then time to forgive yourself and live life to the fullest. We hope you will stick around and add to the conversations.

I enjoyed her story and I am glad she has finally found someone who treats her with love and respect. It is so sad what the religion has done to so many of us. I wish her much happiness in the years ahead.
