  What Small Business Would You Start/Buy If You Had The Capital?

  i often ask myself that question, just in case i ever do win ozlotto or powerball (.

  another thought is to start an art materials supply shop.

  i actually did a year at art school, believe it or not!

  Sounds like somebody's not entirely impressed by what's already out there...

  Small businesses are a thing of the past in the USA. All of the small stores have been taken over by Home Depot, Wall Mart, Sam Ash music, Guitar Centers. Office Depot. Block buster.

  There're always niche markets that are unprofitable for the big boys to pursue

  YOU're talking my language, not so much starting the business part, but LOVING to go into Art Supply Shops and hang out and just drool over all the colors and markers and pencils and even the big paper, and even the drafting tables, and and and... it's been so long... and Rapidograph Pens, my FIRST LOVE!!! ;-D and I'm no artist either... well, as a kid I was a BIG wannabe...

  Those places are great for just spending hours browsing.

  Alternative currency... how about the Liberty Dollar?

  It was the Liberty Dollar that got me interested in the private minting/alternative currency idea. The big weakness in the Liberty Dollar, IMO, is that it is pegged to the US dollar. So when silver and gold climbed in price recently, the Liberty Dollar had to be devalued. Whereas an ounce of silver used to back ten Libertys and an ounce of gold backed 500 libertys, now an ounce of silver backs twenty Libertys and an ounce of gold backs 1000 Libertys. I think the Phoenix Silver Dollar is better thought out - it simply allows the silver to float against the $US, and issues paper currency representing fractions of ounces or large numbers thereof. I'd like to see a similar gold backed currency, and I don't mean the e-gold types that are headquartered in tax shelters like the Caymans and the island of Jersey!

  Post Your Strange/Interesting Animal Anecdotes

  a mate of mine used to live in penshurst, and i had to pass the corner pet shop to get to his place.

  more often than not, a small black and white cat was sitting just out of the doorway in front of the shop.

  he was sitting patiently, with that dreamy, half-asleep expression cats sometimes get, looking up at the cages full of birds fluttering around!.

  A friend's kitty while sitting on the rim of the toilet watches him pee and after he flushes the toilet twice the kitty bats at the swirling water! Now I don't know if that classifies as "voyeurism" or just a kitty who loves water!

  Our cat Timmy used to come running when the toilet flushed, when he was younger. He was fascinated seeing all that water cascading into the bowl. (I understand that our toilets flush differently from the American version)

  i'd probably have a pretty well stocked backyard machine shop, complete with lathe(s), milling machine, welding gear, etc.

  i'm a fitter and turner by trade, so it kind of makes sense...

  today i was at burlington baby depot registering for my baby shower, stolling up and down the aisles and scanning.

  low and behold, down the aisle comes a dub.

  as soon as she set eyes on me, she backed out of the aisles as fast as she could, as if i was throwing poop at her.

  Dub is short for Jay DubbleYew (JW)

  When I was still an active JW I had another jw ask me what she should do if a df'd person came through her checkout line.

  While she's drawing a paycheque, her employer is Caesar. So on Caesar's time, she follows Caesar's rules. I'd have thought it would be simple to work out. However, Dubs are taught when NOT to obey Caesar's rules, they're not so good on the actual obedience side.

  I wouldn't mind having one of those fresh poultry shops, like Lenards. But I probably wouldn't be able to run a Lenards; the inability to follow others' rules that rules out ordinary employment pretty well rules out being a franchisee too. A fresh seafood shop appeals to me too. I'm not too sure why - except for salmon, sushi and oysters, I don't care much for seafood or fish! I guess it's another of those display things - fish and seafood look so good on ice in those display cabinets. I wouldn't be able to stand selling anything live, like crabs or lobsters, however!

  or at best no enemies who can present a viable "good reason" against you and your success?

  muslims were angered by the pope's quoting a 14th century writer who said that muslims are violent in nature.. in order to disprove this statement many muslims took too the streets shouting violent slogans and burned an effigy of the pope.

  still more muslims demonstrated that they are not violent by firebombing random churches.. yup... actions speak louder than words.

  When I was a kid, my sister and her family moved from a farm into Sydney, so that her husband could do the Meat Inspector's course at a Technical College. They were living in a flat where they couldn't keep pets, so we ended up with their brown border collie, Scamp, and Fluffy the cat, and her daughter Kitty for a year. Fluffy had some kittens, and when they opened their eyes and began to explore, one got awfully interested in the big brown thing who happened to be Scamp. It followed Scamp as fast as its little legs could carry it. Scamp knew Fluffy waaaaay to well to show any interest in the kitten (knowing that to do so would result in a fistful of claws in his snout!). He moved away, tail between his legs, and when it was apparent the kitten wasn't giving up, he went and jumped over the fence to escape!
