i've presented myself on this db with a strong inclination that there is such a thing a death with dignity, including my expressed (and still resolved) determination to refuse a blood transfusion (or any other organ or fluid implant from another human being) to prolong my life (for reasons that have nothing to do with jw pseudo-theology).. in that determination, i obviously have a personal ideal of a "death with dignity.".
however, last night, i watched an interview wherein the commentator said "there is no dignity in death; there is only dignity in life.".
it gave me serious pause for thought.. i'd appreciate your perspectives.. craig

I also think their are some occasions when suicide could be dignified. In addition to what you said, and some might hate me for this, but I think it would show some dignity if a person who say, couldn't resist molesting children, did it.
I don't think though, that refusing medical treatment that could allow you to lead a semi-normal, healthy life is dignified. Of course, I have not closed my mind to the possibility, I just haven't heard a decent reason to change my mind.

To die because a procedure was refused that could have saved someone, in my perspective would be undignified.
I think that dignity in life far outweighs any dignity that can be had in death. To refuse a medical procedure that would most likely allow you to live many more fulfilling years is not only a slap in the face to people that love you and want you around, but also conveys a sense of low self-worth IMO. I see no dignity in this whatsoever. That being said, if having a life-saving medical procedure that could add many more enjoyable years to life is undignified, so be it.
That being said, to die in a dignified way is something I want. I plan to donate my body to science as a gesture that hopefully supports this.

Well, I was only joking. It's actually quite hard for Black Americans to trace their ancestry back to Africa. Information can be gathered (sales records, etc.) about the Africans once they landed on American soil, but anything before that is damn near possible to trace. I just figured being the descendant of an African cannibal would be cool.

No doctor would remove a arm , leg , whatever without a really good reason. Just wanting it removed is not a good reason. Most people would consider the person insane. Neither can u just take your life just b/c it is your life.
It was just an analogy . How about this one: A man wants to remove his penis (it happens all the time), because that's his choice. It is not the same as someone else choosing to remove another man's penis. Better?

Sometimes people do kill others, and at times we call it justifed. I do not believe that barring a horrible defective disease or an illness or disease in the mother that would render her incapable of life, that killing a fetus is a choice. I believe it is murder.Killing a fetus is a choice.. I don't understand what you mean. Even if you think it's murder, it's still a choice. Once again, murder is the UNLAWFUL taking of a human life. Abortion is legal, therefore not unlawful, therefore it's not murder.

Yes I agree it is a double standard but it's aimed to please the few not the majority.
