  What kind of person was Nathan H. Knorr?

  we have several examples in the forum showing that president knorr was not a loving and caring person; one that impressed me was the one about the elderly bethelite that was put out on the streets until his death due to a disagreement with knorr.

  i bring to your attention an incident that happened in the country of honduras back in the 50s, it has to do with immoral conduct by a branch overseer and his subsequent disfellowshiping.

  i am not critical of the end result of his conduct but rather the salacious and detailed report of this matter putting in the open the details for the whole world to see.

  Shortly after you arrived at Bethel you were invited to attend the “New Boy Talk”, a friendly informal chat session with the President and patriarchal head of the Watchtower Society. He would talk for one whole morning to a group of new Bethlites about sex. Most of us were pretty ignorant on the subject, and so Brother Knorr would explain wet dreams and the evils of masturbation and fornication, and how to date and marry. In my particular ‘new boy talk’ I remember him encouraging us to take our girlfriends to the beach to find out how well endowed they really were, so there would be no great disappointments later. I wondered at the time if he was speaking from personal experience and if his wife’s breasts had been smaller than he’d expected.

  it comes as a result of my personal experiences while seeing the wt practices..

  I hope not to offend anyone with the title. It comes as a result of my personal experiences while seeing the WT practices.

  Is a policy used for everything, congregational matters, finances, legal, government and whatever? The WT will try to always come out on top, no matter how much they have to get in the mud to do it.

  Just one example, the modern arrangement regarding health care and transportation of their ministers evolved in a manner that was supposed to be beneficial to the congregations. At the end of the day the flock is saddled with a per capita that goes to the WT for safekeeping and administration.

  Before the current health coverage, the WT allowed the congregations and circuits to pay for minor medical expenses for the overseers. When they had a major medical situation, they will go to the hospital and claim no assets; they were treated as indigents and the State absorbed the costs. Sometime during the 70’S, Social Services at the State level started looking at the situation and the WT eventually took over their health care; but always in a manner where they came out ahead.

  There is a lot more that could be added but I think that this will give you the basic premise.

  Rene had a rough family experience coming out of the WT, he lost his family. There is a thread where he shared that; I will try to find it. It was very informing and interesting.

  i am sure that we share the same experience and that we remember fondly some that we caring, loving and generally interested in the brothers.

  at the same time we might remember others that were arrogant, selfish, abusive and oppressive.

  Before the WT took over the expenses for transportation and medical for the CO's, it was abusive the amounts that the congregations and circuits used to pay for that. As far as the auto, it was the personal ownership of the brother, it needed replacement like every 3 year. If your circuit was in a well off area; the purchase of the car was going to be your circuit's duty with considerable expense for the brothers.

  Many abuses and fights due to those expenses.

  I had a good experience with a young couple in the circuit work, at one time we were supposed to rehearse for a Convention and gathered at their place. It was a group of about 6 brothers, after the rehearsal we were very surprised when all of us were invited to dine with them, the sister said that she was following her family custom that whoever visits their place has to eat with them.

  What's the purpose of being a JW now?

  with all the recent changes to this religion, what really is the purpose of being a jw?

  especially for those who have been in and witnessed all the changes and still no sight of the end.

  for these ones in particular (35-55 year olds) they must be in a state of confusion.

  The way out is more difficult than staying put. I feel that many of the friends, are still here but not fully in; they are in a state of inertia. All the reasons that have been mentioned, family, finances, friends and many more are part of the equation.

  Fidel Castro and the WT

  i am going to engage on a trip to the past and share with you some of the matters that marked the beginning of the jws persecution in cuba.

  you will be surprised that the pattern that was followed is very similar to what happened in other dictatorial countries.. in the cuban case, i am going to surprise you and tell you that like what happened with hitler; the wt was partially responsible for their clash and confrontation with the cuban government.

  during the early 60s the revolution was fighting for survival and they were willing and ready to demolish any perceived enemy to their cause.. a prime example was their war against the catholic church that was the most influential religious entity in the country; it took the supreme leader only a few public discourses to send the vast majority of clergy packing and back to their country, in this case spain.. the jehovah’s witnesses were an insignificant minority but they over estimated their importance and displayed a belligerent attitude, it was known that this was a us based religion and an easy target to connect them with the cia.

  One of the darkest moments in the whole history of the Castro regime was the creation of the UMAP (Military Units for Production Help). This was an attempt to use as cheap labor all the males not incorporated to the Revolution, the excuse was that they were fulfilling their military service obligation.

  The other purpose was to have control over these individuals, included in this group were Catholics, evangelicals, JW's, homosexuals, anyone with ties to the previous government and so on. What they did was to create a series of concentration camps in one of the provinces and intern all of these individuals there.

  Since this was done under the guise of military service, there was no due process or any semblance of legality; people were just gathered and confined in these places without any recourse. Not only single men were affected but many family heads were also taken and the wives were left to fend for themselves.

  The treatment was brutal, this concentrations camps were designed following the model of the Soviet camps, beatings, abuse, rape, hunger and even some killings were part of the treatment; anything to break the will of the recruit and set an example for the others.

  The brothers were at the forefront of these harsh conditions and they experienced intolerable conditions during their time there. Some of the officers and guards were very sadistic when dealing with the friends.

  This experiment was so well planned that on swift move all the personnel working at Bethel, all the circuit overseers with the exception of two were arrested and taken to this infernos. They remained there for the duration of the experiment.

  This abuse was finally closed after about two years, the reasons for the closure were that it was totally ineffective, non productive and the most serious one was international public opinion. It seems that at a time when Castro was trying to become legitimate, a group of French intellectuals visiting the country got wind of what was going on and made statements that were very damaging to the Cuban image.

  This was really a very sad affair, had a profound impact in the witnesses work, later on I will go into further details regarding this.

  For me it was difficult to understand the degree of cooperation between the CO and his buddy at the service desk. We had one particular guy whose mission, was circuit after circuit to dismantle the experienced elders.

  From his first visit he started an underground campaign against the senior elders in the body, and by his third visit he had created a net around them and was ready for their removal.

  Eventually the elders in the circuit got wind of what he was doing and started fighting back, this resulted in his entire tenure being fight after fight.
