Waves of panic don’t help, the Italy response could have backfired.
They shut shown business forcing thousands of young working people to travel home, homes full of extended elderly families who’s immune systems got overwhelmed, they died.
A measured response is needed, nothing more.
But isn’t that just delaying the inevitable? Aren’t we better off letting the disease run its course? No! When the virus is under control, as it is coming under control in South Korea, then a very rigorous system of testing and isolation of ill patients CAN keep this disease under control.
You are quite wrong on this point, and it actually reads just like a WT article.
It is why governments are taking action, what we are all doing in society or least should be is precisely that, delaying the inevitable.

The majority of people who get this virus will have a very minor condition.
I repeat, for those with no underlying health problems, this is a very minor illness.
Funny how this message gets shouted down.

The danger from over panic is also very real.

To put what you said in simpler, more obvious terms: "the death rate among people it doesn't kill is really low".
So OK then, no problem!
How stupid. It's serious when anyone dies before their time and if you think it can't kill a healthy 40 year old, you haven't been paying attention.
People treating it as no big deal and not taking it seriously are the ones that are responsible for it spreading.
I don't think people realize how bad it is - sure, 85% have mild symptoms. But mild is from a certain perspective, that of needing ICU treatment or not. Some of those are still very very ill. Another 15% have more severe symptoms - some of those can die, you're in a bad way and there may not be a space for you. The 5% with critical symptoms need special medical care, ventilators and such like - those quickly fill up and if you think you're keeping the spot when someone rich and famous shows up, you have a lot to learn about the power of wealth and importance.
Already, in Italy, they are making life-and-death decisions because there aren't enough intensive care places for everyone. Maybe you are 50 or 60 ... should you keep the spot over a 40 year old mother of 3? Someone makes that choice.

With my experience of the medical and legal systems in this country, neither you or covid19 can teach me anything about wealth or importance.

Facts can actually be used to douse the flames of hysteria.
About 2/3 of the dead in Italy have had 3 or more underlying health conditions.
The death rate for those with no existing conditions is still well below 2%.
If I’m 75 years old with no underlying health problems, especially a good heart, I’d be very confident about surviving covid19.
While it doesn’t sit well with the current popular hysterical opinion, death usually happens via an inflammatory process in the lungs, when understood covid19 becomes far less scary.
A good a coughing and sneeze strength will contribute greatly to saving the lives of many over the next 6 months.
If your old and have underlying health problems, I’d practice strict hygiene and avoid public places at all costs, don’t go near children especially when it’s at its peak, probably only weeks or few months away for Australia.

I believe Italy has a large population of elderly, especially in the poorest regions, this is inflating the death rate.
Experts in Australia agree, we need to lower the anxiety of the general community about this virus. The death rate is extremely low among the young, healthy population. It wouldn’t bother 85% of us even if we contracted it, the vulnerability remains as it always has with respiratory disease.
Don’t buy pallets of toilet paper.
Do practice good personal hygiene.
I cannot begin to fathom the power media has over the general population, I reckon a few fake headlines could have people stabbing each other in the streets.

Exactly smiddy, if we got news of every senior citizen that dies from the common flu strains and pneumonia or bronchitis infections it would put things in perspective.
Elderly and the already unhealthy are always at risk of developing bad lung infections from colds and flus, this isn’t any different and not particularly deadly either.
We will get something extremely deadly pop up sooner or later, can’t see it being this one though

What you want to do is have them get past the biggest risk period, to when vaccines maybe developed or enough people have built up immunity that the spread is much slower and contraction less likely
Yes and hopefully a drug or vaccine isn’t far off.
I heard a University in Australia identified the protein that the virus uses to invade cells, spike protein or something I don’t remember details but they do believe it could be controlled via a drug.
More funding is needed for real science in Australia, science to fund and find cures for things like this, not funding departments who create female wage gap and climate change graphs through dodgy statistics.
We don’t even have a national centre for disease control in Australia, the federal government has left it for individual state control. That is so stupid beyond belief, this lack of preparation our so called government has could be the difference between maybe 10-50k deaths to something like 250 000 dead Australians.

The death rate for the corona virus is around 2%, somewhere between 1-2%. It obviously depends on many factors, but say 2%.
Its first pass around the globe will take 18 months and infect 40-70% of the earth’s population, this is now inevitable according to some scientists..(epidemiologist?)
If 50% are infected and 2% die, it looks like you’ll almost certainly know of somebody who dies from it over the next 18months.
Could it be you?
If you are infected and over 80 years old, your chances of death are more like 14-15%
If you are over 70, it’s closer to 5%.
Anyone born after 1980 has about 0.2% of death, and children are not affected by the virus.
Any underlying health conditions will make things worse, but If you’re a fit and healthy 30 to 50 year old your chances of dying are extremely slim.
When the plague swept through London in the 1340’s it wiped out half the population.
This isn’t the plague and this panic buying of toilet paper is stupid and irrational, the hint is in the name “panic buying”.
The best protection is good clean living, unfortunately not well practiced these days. All these fat people filling shopping trolleys with detergent and toilet paper, the only thing they should panic about is their physical condition.
Eat lots of veggies and exercise often, lift weights and do proper vigorous workouts. This is a proven health stimulant and easily the best known to mankind.
If it is worst case and turns out to be the apocalypse, I’ll gladly give 200 rolls of toilet paper and 12 bottles of hand sanitizer for some electrical insulation tape or something useful
