  Did you hear Jw's swear?

  i know that what counts as swearing differs alot from region to region, amongst the words i heard used were "crap, bloody, shit, git, bastard, bitch" and the dubs who used these words would say that they didn't belive they were swear words at all!.

  Because people think he should be smart. Hence why they use the word scientist.

  He probably is smart, too. Sometimes smart people believe foolish things. The real problem is with people who elevate the "smart" peoples' opinions above their own and don't think for themselves.

  each other that you'd never know it was another magazine.

  Yes, I suppose it helps if you've seen them, unlike the majority of these posters. As I said before, someone high up made a dumb decision and now the JWs are supposed to recognize that a magazine that looks as thick as the one they've been getting for decades is actually two copies. The proper response to a situation like this is to reverse the decision and stop nesting them. But there's no point changing it again now that they've gone through all this trouble to train the Witnesses.

  Well said, villagegirl. Although I do think that stricter branches of Christianity are on their way out, it's a slow process because there's always some kids raised with that type of religion who choose to carry that on as adults. But I definitely don't see humans becoming less spiritually inclined. The Pope may have less power than he used to, but it's difficult to see any real "fall of Babylon".

  I do wonder from time to time what it's like to have spent decades as an adult Witness and to see that the system keeps on going. They must think to themselves, "We were sure it was coming around 1975, and now it's 2013! 2013!! And my parents thought the end was coming in the '50s!" Surely they should be starting to doubt, to lose their sense of urgency by now? And yet, the older ones I know seem to be convinced that the end is still right around the corner. I eventually devoted a thread to this psychological phenomenon (search the forum for "Shepard Scale").

  Perhaps some of the less well-to-do Witnesses have also been spoiled by those few wealthier members of the congregation who tend to cover the bill. Don't we all love fake-insisting that they let us pay, and then promptly giving up after they insist on paying for us? It's human nature. But then we get used to coasting by on others' generosity.

  JW businessman's email about the UN and false religion

  i was shown a hard copy of an email from a purported jw businessman who claimed he had contact with some un officials as part of his 'business'.

  in conversation, he claimed that he blurted out and asked them when they were going to clamp down on religion as foretold in jw prophecy.

  according to the account, the un official acted startled, and asked 'how do you know?'.

  The way I used to always hear this urban legend, the JW brother was giving a business-related talk to some UN officials when he mentioned the prophesied move against religion. There was never more background to it than that, because the person who made this up obviously was lacking in imagination.

  I read that a bit differently. "Could include" seemed intended to expand the reach of "earthly treasure" that a person should not be accumulating; now it's not just money, but also "prestige, fame, or power".

  And in par. 15, I thought it was strange that the Society set up a ridiculous strawman before the seemingly reasonable statement by Jesus. What religious leaders have preached that "all effort to succeed should be stifled"?! Then again, I suppose if I'd actually heard of such a message, those preachers would be hypocrites, wouldn't they? ;)

  But it seemed to me to be a way of saying, "Now, some people say all success is bad, but we're going to be more lenient than that and allow for some effort at success. Isn't that nice of us?" At least, that was my thought during the study.
