My highlights from the AGM

some of this will not be new to those of you who read other people's notes, but i bet there are a few new bits for you here, so i've provided a user-friendly table of contents, as an homage to the contents that appear before each book of the bible in the new nwt.

i might remember more highlights later, as i'm rather tired right now, but this is what i can recall off the top of my head.. contents (use of quote marks in this section is facetious; these are not actual quotes).

"say, did you notice that 2014 is the 100th anniversary, people?".

Have they retained the phrase "undeserved kindness"? -- Yes.

Yes, actually I seem to recall that during the run-up to the new release, as they remembered the original release of the NWT, specific mention was made of the change in wording from whatever they were using before (KJV?) to the NWT, when "grace" became "undeserved kindness". They dwelled on how that gave them a new perspective on the subject. (Perhaps not an accurate perspective, but hey.) So obviously they are proud and unapologetic about that translation.

the new bible (no, it doesnt have a new name, for all who are asking) is a huge f**king monstrosity!

I don't think those are the Bible versions, Splash, and the name is JW Library. I remember clearly that the King James is one of the versions offered, since that was such a surprise to me at the time that they said it.

i am writing this from memory i didn't ake notes so forgive me if it is out of order.. sumary.

it started off with the annoucement of a bible display (mueseum) being built that focuses on jehovah's name in the bible.

(i found it funny that few if any bible predate the 12th century because that's when the word jehovah was created bet that get's left out) the speaker went into the work done searching for various and the miracles donations and loans that happened to bring this about.

All of the GB spoke at some length. Technically, Br. Pierce was the chairman and didn't have a part. He seems to have a stuttering issue, so that might be the reason.

For what it's worth, this is my take on the AGM

as i was leaving the kh where i watched the meeting, i overheard several conversations, all to the effect that"what a great bunch of guys the gb is.

" the sense of humor among them, the naturalness and ease they had while speaking, etc.. for that matter, i too, was impressed at how like able they seem to be and, believe it or not, the 3 1/2 hours went by fairly quickly, thank god!

but as i think about it, i'm concluding that that was the main goal of the wide viewing of this event: to assure the rank and file that the gb, the men who are in charge of god's household, are a great bunch of guys.

I agree, stillin, I've been thinking the same thing about the event. The stage was populated almost exclusively by the GB and they were "on their best behavior", charming the audience. There were no stern, "don't do this" or "do more" talks as we get from the CAs and DCs. They didn't even bring on-stage for an interview anyone who served in foreign lands, as they've done in past AGMs, though I suspect this was mainly just because this meeting was devoted to the introduction of the new NWT.

3 1/2 hours was there a break

Lol, that's no longer than a typical morning or afternoon session at an assembly, so no. This did result in a lot of hungry JWs at the evening meeting, though, as the meeting ran long and ended well past dinnertime.

No "bum witnesses" or "unbelieving mates" allowed

Not to harp on this too much, but I don't recall hearing the phrase "bum witnesses". I hope this isn't just misreporting of a minor joke about a wife calling her husband a bum.

ok here is another spin on the wt verses the internet argument, and this time i'm going to be pro-wt.

i have read articles and seen graphs that show in countries that have high internet penetration, growth rates diminish.

this is used to support the idea that the information age is killing the wt.

My interest in this revised NWT

the biases of the earlier iteration of the nwt have been known and discussed from the appearance of the first appearance in 1950, and i assume the revised edition will be affected by the same prejudicial biases.

one can cynically subscribe to the view that this is a financial bonanza and possibly a distraction from the imminent centenary of that distant significant date.. my interest will be to see how the impact of this revision evolves, particularly in the area of the wts's support material and on the impact its release will have on witnesses.

some preliminary thoughts are:.

Any self-respecting, genuine, 21st century revision would certainly revise the text in line with the latest Greek text

Yes, I don't think they did this or else they would have crowed about it during the meeting.

Anyone have a copy in hand? Still curious to see if they had the balls to slip "governing body" into the bible.

for people who have a paralyzing fear of dying, to where it seems like it's this horrible, stalking monster, jwism is a powerful sedative.. but really, the idea of living forever, in human form, is nonsense.

living forever isn't about living forever, it's about not dying.. death is natural.

it can be painful, sudden, or both.

fresh prince, you're almost willfully ignoring the positive parts of our posts like you can't see them :)

Didn't I say that hardly anyone starved during the Great Depression? Heck, they were still making movies at the time. It was far from an apocalyptic scenario. And prologos pointed out that, in the event of humans obliterating themselves with nukes, aquatic life will be protected by the ocean. Life is more resilient than you think, anyway. I mean, it would be pretty hard to wipe out the human race. Some would be almost bound to survive, thanks to bunkers, living in the countryside, etc. Now I'm not saying it's impossible to wreck the entire biosphere, but it would take a lot of effort. The Earth has weathered volcano eruptions that make our biggest nukes look like firecrackers.

It's difficult to find record of more than even a few dozen starvation deaths for that time period.

I'm still recovering memories from yesterday's meeting, and I'd like to correct myself on something. I said that there was no begging for money, but there was a prominent mention of contribution boxes by one speaker, who said that 'probably all of the remote locations have them nearby too'.

Another interesting NWT change: the main Bible text no longer says "Sheol" or "Hades", only "the grave", though the original Hebrew/Greek words are given in footnotes.

To be fair, for the addition of "is the gate", they didn't say they knew for sure what was in the original manuscripts, just that they came to the "conclusion" that it was in the original text, which is acknowledging that they don't have the original text itself.
