ptt7000, you're right, my post was not worded the way I meant it to be. The comment "look, they have all the printing presses and are still publishing Studies in the Scriptures, etc.!" was meant to refer to the Society back when Russell took it over. I know the Society has long since stopped printing those.

"In the past we said 1919. And then will be great tribulation. If we look at the context in Matthew 24:3 and what was the disciples question. Jesus answer is found in rest of Matthew 24 and all of 25. All of these scriptures are talking about his coming at great tribulation."
So the master is yet to come and all of the scriptures in Matthew 24 and 25 are talking about his coming at the great tribulation - but they continue to preach that Jesus was enthroned as king in 1914. ????
Actually it sounds like they're moving away from 1919, slowly. This does not affect 1914, which comes before 1919 :0) As you know, the 1914 prediction is based on 2520 years after 607 BC. In WT theology, Jesus' coming is different from Jesus' presence, which still begins in 1914.

Actually, the timing is slightly more interesting than that, rebel8. Armageddon was predicted for something like 10/1-2/1914, but someone here has posted that this date on the Jewish calendar is 10/6/2014. I haven't confirmed that myself.

Why tv.jw.org?
by pixel inhello,.
this is a question for people with web knowledge (i'm looking at you simon :-)):.
i'm wondering why they named it tv.jw.org instead of something like jw.org/tv?.
-
Apognophos
I'm not as web-knowledgeable as Simon and some others here, but I don't think there's a meaningful difference on a technical level. But sites often use a subdomain to show that something is a significant and separate portion of the site. For instance, much of Apple's web site is in web pages under www.apple.com, but the online store is under the subdomain store.apple.com. Maybe it's easier to run a separate subdomain off a separate server in order to offload traffic from the main subdomain.

Common feature of religions: explaining life after death
by NAVYTOWN ini am certainly no expert when it comes to the various religions that exist, but i notice most of them have a common feature.
they almost all try to in some way 'explain' death or else state that death is not really the end.
the bottom line is that in actuality nobody has any definite factual proof that we can live beyond the moment of our physical death.

If everybody knew that they would get a good, healthy 80 years and then expire in their sleep, then I doubt there would be any fear of death and need for religion to posit a life after death. Life is uncertain, though. It's hard to be philosophical when someone's kid gets run over. They were alive for a short time and now they're not. How does a parent deal with that? In the past, life was harder and life spans were shorter because of violence, little medical care, and very high infant and childhood mortality. So it's easy to see why people had a need to believe that life would go on after death.

Killing In Self Defense
by Cold Steel inthe man was moving around in the darkness of j's home with a gun.

Gregor, I doubted it because it sounded like you were referring to the well-known picture which ADCMS then posted, which erroneously labels Rutherford's companions as bodyguards. If you have heard firsthand accounts of bodyguards removing hecklers, then that's different. However, I want to point out that you first said they would "whack" hecklers, and this sounded more violent to me than, as you later said, using the canes to hook them, and then 'giving them a rap on the elbow' on the way out. I find it difficult to believe anyone was getting a "beatdown", as ADCMS said, but I can accept your last statement of events.
Cold Steel, some quotes for you:
*** w84 3/1 p. 13 Declining to ‘Live by the Sword’—A Protection ***
Christians today likewise abstain from trusting in weapons such as guns and knives—even during these dangerous, “critical times hard to deal with.” (2 Timothy 3:1) They take seriously the Bible’s command to ‘beat swords into plowshares,’ and they do not seek to harm their fellowman. (Isaiah 2:4) Because they do not carry weapons for purposes of self-defense, instead of resorting to violence they are more inclined to try to reason with people who would do them harm. “If possible, as far as it depends upon you, be peaceable with all men,” is the counsel they follow.*** w83 7/15 pp. 24-25 pars. 12-14 “Seek Peace and Pursue It” ***
12 In line with Romans 13:1, 4, the worldly “superior authorities” may set up certain peace-keeping agencies, such as police, that are armed officially to protect citizens and property. Since such arrangements permitted by God are described as “God’s minister, an avenger to express wrath upon the one practicing what is bad,” it would be in order for the Christian to request and receive protection from such an agency. But even if he finds it necessary to defend himself or his loved ones by whatever is at hand, he should not use firearms. Nor would he take the law into his own hands. In many countries it is illegal even to possess firearms for self-defense.—Matthew 22:21; compare Exodus 22:2.13 However, for private self-defense, might not the Christian take training in the martial arts, such as the Chinese Kung fu? Let it be noted that this most lethal of the Oriental arts was developed more than 1,400 years ago by Zen Buddhist monks of the Shaolin Monastery on the slopes of Songshan, one of China’s sacred mountains. From this religious source came also the martial arts of Japan—Bushido, meaning, literally, “The Way of the Warrior.” Many experts in the arts of judo, kendo and karate still draw inspiration from religious meditation. Karate has as its objective incapacitating the victim, which could result in serious injury or death. Surely, those who trust in Jehovah would not turn to the martial arts for defense!—Proverbs 3:31.
14 Would it be fitting for the Christian to possess firearms for the purpose of hunting animals for food? Since the Flood, God has permitted the killing of animals for food, though the blood must be poured out on the ground, not eaten. (Genesis 9:3, 4; Deuteronomy 12:23-25) When allowed by local law, some Witnesses keep guns for protection against wild animals or for shooting game. (Matthew 22:21) To them this may be an important or practical source of food. But never should anyone think that Jehovah would approve of taking animal life for sport, for the thrill of killing—as has been the way with ancient and modern “Nimrods.” Since “the soul of the flesh is in the blood,” this is precious in Jehovah’s sight.—Leviticus 17:11, 14.

I think they were for looking dandy. Or possibly for solidarity, to make Rutherford feel better about needing one, if indeed he did.

Coming out to the closet to your family as an "apostate". Any experiences? Your input would be greatly appreciated.
by im_free inso it's been about 10 years since i have faded out and have stopped believing in the jw teachings.
since then, i have accepted jesus and have experienced an amazing tranformation in my life and have been freed from the jw prison mentally and spiritually.
a more detailed thread about my journey is here if you are interested.. anyways, my jw family lives in another state so they are unaware that i am no longer "in the truth" since i have not told them.

Yes, at the very least I assume im_free would not use the "a" word. That would be painting a bull's-eye on his own chest. Seriously, though, some tension is best left unresolved.

Don't say "the truth", say the Jehovah's Witness religion
by hoser inwhen i meet up with a jay dubya i've never met before and the conversation inevitably turns to "so where did you learn the truth?
i reply" my parents joined the jehovahs witness religion in 1982".
some of the looks i get are priceless .

I've had to root this word out of my vocabulary too. I prefer to say "religion", or sometimes even better, "organization". It's a correct theocratic word to use, so it's safe around JWs, and yet it also conveys the clinical, corporate nature of the religion.

You do realize that those "bodyguards" are actually N. H. Knorr and the lawyer A. H. MacMillan, right? They wouldn't know how to beat someone down if their life depended on it.
