  That kind of "all or nothing" cognitive disfunction (of a small percentage of the population) is a large aspect of the problem.
  

  I was referring specifically to the U.K. and the path they took and the arguments they made as they did it.
  

  You can chide me about cognitive dysfunction if you want, but you, my friend, are the one who made the jump from weapons to purely utilitarian objects like kitchen knives and therefore it is you have bridged the gap and made my point for me via a demonstration of the logical end-point of your argument.
  

  I'm not trying to be caustic here. As I pointed out farther up this thread a ban on what Biden calls, "weapons of war" would not be enough. Not in a country as violent as the U.S.

  Yes. Therefore it is important to differentiate between a lateral movement in the types of murders committed vs. a vertical movement in the numbers of murders committed.

  That understanding is behind the logic of locking up the kitchen knives if an argument breaks out. It also is behind the logic of gun regulation.

  That is an argument whose end point is the denial of a pinky-sized keychain pepper-spray aerosol to a 50kg woman who must walk to her car after sunset.

  Where does this logic break down?

  The break in logic occurs via the assumption that murder rates and other forms of violence are a single ingredient recipe. Criminologists have looked for a direct correlation between guns and violence and been unable to find it. A country, like the former Soviet Union for example, can have a gun ownership rate of effectively 0% and still have a murder rate of roughly twice what we have here in the U.S.
  

  Mass shootings make me physically ill and it is tough to keep emotion out of the discussion. But the fact remains that an ordinary pump-action shotgun will put more lead into the air faster than a so-called, "Assault rifle" The term "Assault rifle" itself is one the Left coined to describe civilian variants of modern military rifles and as such, it is misleading and inaccurate. No military force on earth uses the AR family of rifle. It is not a battlefield weapon and never has been.

  Personally, I would like to see the bar for gun ownership raised considerably. There's a saying here in my state to the effect that it's very easy to buy a gun here, but it's even easier to go to jail for a long, long time because of it. The laws regarding the carry and use of a firearm are quite complex and most gun owners are not versed nearly well enough.

  For years and years the left maintained the fiction that the right to keep and bear arms existed only under the auspices of s militia. (Which is ridiculous when you think about it, as guaranteeing the right of a military body to bear arms is a tautology.)

  A great deal of past discussion, including the notion of legitimate use (Which is not necessarily the same thing as lawful use ) occurred under that rubric

  The purpose of the Second Amendment was to prevent the standing army from being used against the citizenry. The idea is a little archaic today because royal families do not maintain their power via their own private armies, and we never accepted the idea of royalty here anyway, but the division between civil and military authority is still enshrined in our Constitution and laws.

  The Second Amendment would probably not be the issue that it is today except for the Civil War and the intense lawlessness that followed. It was during this period that names like Colt, Winchester and Remington became household words and guns became fixed in the American psyche as symbols of freedom. (Which puzzles the rest of the English speaking word.)
  

  Biden is a life-long politician and probably understand that elections here are decided by moderates and that you only have to anger a tiny fraction of them to lose the next one. But we'll see...

  The Importance of Language

  language is obviously a very important thing.

  obviously, language is essential in conveying ideas - without it, we'd be screwed.. but it goes beyond that in terms of its importance.. first, it's a good idea to use accurate language, especially when talking about important things or discussing difficult topics.. second, we should be free to use the words we want to use.

  unfortunately, there is an attempt by certain people to control what words we can and cannot say.

  Words have a flavor that dictionaries don't convey.

  If, for example, your parents weren't married when you were conceived, there's all sorts of ways to say it in standard English. Some are simply statements of fact and some are not.

  Learning how not to make horrible faux pas like that is one of the hardest things about learning a new language.

  Friend Is Worried About My “Mental Health”...lol

  one of my tennis friends who happens also to be a nurse, told me today that he is concerned about my mental health because i support donald trump.

  i believe he got shafted but i also recognize that very little will probably change regarding his being re-elected.

  this man voted for the “green” candidate and said he personally agrees with most of trump’s views but he thinks he’s morally corrupt.

  Why do so many Americans think the election was stolen?

  I think there might be a little bit of blur (Not sure what the right word is) over the difference between suspicion and evidence. Where are we at now? Forty+ lost cases?
