No idea if this is actually true or just one of those anecdotes you read, but supposedly in many countries parents don't have this bizarre expectation that the kids need to punted out the door as soon as they graduate. Work, Yes. But I think maybe they see the wastefulness of someone in an entry level job pouring most of their paycheck into rent and therefore unable to save much of anything to buy something of their own. It becomes a trap.

“The United Socialist States of America?”
by Fisherman inwhen i was growing up, some people were on welfare but the vast majority were working people that paid their own rent, doctor’s bills, medicine, food, etc.
—and saved money.
so, a working person did not need financial help from the government if they didn’t have vices.

"So you make 600 week and I will say take home less 20% = $480 x 4 = $1920 a month. The average apartment rent here ( I just looked it up )is $1464 a month. ( you are right-no designer purses! ) if you keep the utilities on, I guess you are going to the food bank"
True. The bright side, at least if you're in your 20's, is that there are lots of single people in the same boat so finding roomates is not too hard. -

Jehovah's Witnesses - Where is Your Money Going?
by Sea Breeze inafter discouraging and in many instances prohibiting jw's from getting an education, like in computer graphics, film-making and design, the wt is employing these kinds of professionals and throwing vast sums of money at their new film-making adventures doubtless from all the properties they confiscated, sold that the local members paid for.
kim and mikey talk about this primarily starting at 13:15https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqafxmsjirk&ab_channel=kimmikey .

"The rank-and-file are strongly encouraged to eschew a secondary education in favor of a low-demand job so that they have plenty of time to recruit more people into the cult."
Do you think the leadership is aware that this is a futile effort? How many people covert to JW via the door to door ministry? On these type forums, reddit etc, it seems almost everyone's story is of being a 3rd or 4th generation JW.
Looking back, I struggle to remember anyone having a regular bible study, much less a baptised convert. In my entire childhood/teenage years I remember one couple who joined and a few random weirdo's who I guess were 'studying' but were probably also dealing with mental health issues. Otherwise it was the same faces i'd known since birth and any growth in membership was just people having a bunch of kids. -

Will Ukraine win?
by Fisherman ini was under the impression that it was going to be a short war, that russia’s military would indeed subdue ukraine’s forces quickly but that is not happening.
seems that russia’s military power is much less than it’s reputed to be.
no guess how it will all end..

"Something that doesn't to make US history books is post 1970, the South Vietnam army had become a capable fighting force, the government was rather stable and the communists had become rather unpopular in the South. The whole anti-war movement was more about the prospect of rich kids getting drafted than an actual moral opposition to the war."
Hmmm. Well...you're an interesting cat. You seem to believe Vietnam could have been salvaged post 1970. I think the idea is fruit loops.
Just curious, did you read Robert McNamara's memoir / mea culpa that he put out in the mid 90s? -

"and then pulled all funding for ARVN. No bullets, no paychecks"
Not completely true.
Fiscal year July 1974-June 1975 Congress approved $700 million in aid. Nixon had requested $1.45 Billion.
You may be right that the ARVN could have held the line on their own given enough aid. I don't know enough about the endgame of Vietnam to say. But no way would ground troops or air support have remained or rather, been recommitted at that point. It seems to me we had been running on the sunk cost fallacy already for years. -

"Perhaps Japan felt that an attack on Hawai's military was justified given the encroachment of whitey on the Asian hemisphere they considered their domain."
Of course they did. They stated as much. The whole 'east asia co prosperity sphere' was outwardly to kick the colonialists out and let Japan take what they considered it's rightful place.'
Pearl Harbor was to knock out the US Fleet and giving them 6-12 months to grab as much as they could, dig in and (they hoped) make it costly enough that the US would say its not worth it and keep what they had conquered.
They may have even had some support from the colonised asian countries had they not been so horrifically brutal to the people they were claiming to liberate. -

"Well stated. Please look into joining the International Legion of Defence of Ukraine.
Fight for Ukraine (fightforua.org)
Thank you for your service."So, unless Riley enlists in the Ukrainian military, his opinion that we should assist them with military hardware is invalid?
Does it work like that in other areas too?
If he was in favor of tax dollars being used to aid another country experiencing a famine, does he need to fly to that country and begin farming?
If he goes before the city council and voices his support for a new highway, does he need to work on the road crew?
Was lend/lease to Britain in WW2 (before the US was officially in the war) a bad idea? Should Roosevelt have said "If anyone cares so much about the UK, then they can take a boat over there and learn to fly a Spitfire"? -

"was not Iraq ultimately to drive them personally off the map as agressors, for having invaded the little rich neighbour Kuwait?"
The Gulf War in 1991 was to push them out of Kuwait.
The invasion of 2003 was about:
1.)Regime Change, and the Iraqis will welcome it and become a peaceful democracy2.) wanting someone to punch after 9/11
3.) They have WMD's and are a threat to the world (they didn't BTW)
4.) setting up a pro american government to increase our presence in the Middle East
5.) Saddam allegedly looked into killing Bush's dad after Iraq was defeated in 1991
6.) The George W. administration had alot of carryovers from his fathers administration. His dad thought anything beyond liberating Kuwait was a bad idea but some others wanted to invade Iraq in 1991 and 9/11 gave them an excuse to 'finish the job'.
I think it's possible that some may have really believed #1 was possible. The idea that since it worked for Germany and Japan after WW2, it will work anywhere. But that's just if i'm feeling very generous.Take your pick
"An excuse perhaps but worked with gdansk, pearl harbor, the tonkin golf."
Are you really including Pearl Harbor in with these other two? Really, dude? I assume by Gdansk you're referring to the Polish corridor. ? -

Please provide some examples of Michelle Obama or AOC spouting Islamic terrorism rhetoric. -

Apocalypse Might be Here at Super Bowl
by mrquik ini had tongue in cheek predicted the end would come should the buffalo bills ever make it to the super bowl.
that was many years ago when they couldn't even make the playoffs.
now things are looking grim as buffalo has a good shot of being there in february.

"And each time they did make the Superbowl, they kept just losing. And by worse and worse margins each time--they made 4 consecutive Superbowls only to lose each time. Seems the Bills are good at sabotaging themselves, nothing more."
They were good a team in a weak conference. And that....field goal miss in 1991, that was their one chance....they were doomed in the the other 3.
