i know that at some point i have to tell my parents that i'm planning to go to college.

i basically have two options:.

If you are in the USA, there should be a community college nearby that will help you obtain transferable credits to the 4-year program. Such an interim plan might save you thousands of dollars in the long run. Are you taking any AP or IB course which will exempt you from remedial or even intro courses which would help speed your completion rate?

I have considered community college. I'll know more where I stand after I take the ACT. I actually graduated last year, but I had good grades so hopefully I'll be OK.

Explain that because maybe he can be approached on that basis. Did he get higher schooling or work longer hours. Did he skip school to pioneer? Is he an Elder or MS. Did he go to college or learned on the job?

He didn't go to college, but he works really hard and he does work long hours. He's a MS. He has auxiliary pioneered several times in the past, and now he's asking me if I want to auxiliary pioneer with him in April.

I'm 18, and yes, I'm baptized. The problem with me living at home while attending college is that the nearest school that has the major I want (meteorology or similar) is 2 1/2 hours away. I really didn't want to continue to go to meetings while at college because I've already been going for over two years while not believing. Also, my parents will know something is up because otherwise I wouldn't be going to college. And continuing to go to meetings could give them false hope about me returning to the "Truth."

On pretending that I'm only going for 3 years, I think they will see through this because I'm pretty sure they know that a meteorology degree is a 4 year program. I do think it would be a good idea to bring up college without mentioning the religion at all, but they will probably bring it up.

I likely won't qualify for grants because my dad makes too much money. I'm going to take the ACT in April, so I'll see if I can get any sort of scholarship. From that point I can figure out how much more money I'm going to need. I currently have a part time job. I worry about working and going to school at the same time, but I doubt I can get around it. I really have no idea if my parents would be willing to help me at all.

I know that at some point I have to tell my parents that I'm planning to go to college. I basically have two options:

1. Tell them early. Or,

2. Tell them right before I leave.

In the case of the first option, here are the pros and cons:

Pros: My parents will have time to prepare themselves for my departure. I can quit faking sooner. And I don't have to make up an excuse for why I'm taking the ACT.

Cons: My parents may decide that I have to leave the house if I'm not going to meetings or out in service, and if they do let me stay, then there will be awkwardness due to the fact that I'm not participating in the religion and they are.

In the second case:

Pros: I can tell them my plans and then promptly leave, escaping too much questioning and the elders. And it might be more of a smooth transition, because I won't have to keep living with witnesses after I'm "out."

Cons: My parents won't have any warning that I'm leaving, and I will have to fake it for a longer time.

Overall, I think there is more risk involved with the first option, because I could be kicked out of the house before I'm ready to leave. However, I may go that route anyway, because if I give them warning that I'm leaving, then the ball is in their court and they have to decide whether to let me stay or not. If I don't give them that advance notice, then they will likely be shocked and very upset because of me just suddenly leaving.

And choosing the first option brings up more questions, like, how early is early enough/too early?

i remember i had just heard about confirmation bias, and it hit me: i realized that i would be guilty of confirmation bias if i didn't look at the other side.

I have been looking at the surface pressure charts myself today because we have in the British Isles an interesting pattern with a south flowing jet stream and very large high pressure anticyclone(1050mb) over Western Siberia and Scandinavia blocking the westerly Atlantic systems. A situation which characterises an Arctic freeze by drawing in the continental cold originating in Siberia and similar to the epic 1962/3 winter. Damn it, I find weather interesting too!

Have you had much cold this winter? Here it has been mostly warm, the lowest temperature was back in early January at -6C (22F). We've had a lot of highs in the 20-25C (68-77F) range lately.

I am still planning for college, in fact I'm taking the ACT on April 8.

I've gotten some conflicting advice about talking to my aunt. She was df'ed years ago, and she came back to meetings just long enough to be reinstated, then for the most part quit going. Now she attends most memorials, and the occasional assembly/convention, but that's it. I think she only attends to keep the family happy. She has a "worldly" boyfriend, speaks to a df'ed family member, and is encouraging her kids to go to college. I really don't think she believes any of it anymore, but I could be wrong.

Perhaps when I'm at her house, I could hint at the subject and see what happens without coming right out and saying it.

i was baptized in 1979 and attended one of the lancaster ohio congregations.

realizing i was gay, i left and after being in the columbus gay community for 6 months, decided bar hopping and cruising was not my cup o' tea.i decided to return in late '90 and was reinstated in '91.

Welcome! I'm also not leaving due to my sexuality. I simply no longer believe in this religion! I only know of one gay person who used to be in our hall, he was df'ed and I believe he is now living with his BF.

who else was homeschooled?

what was your experience with it?.

i was one of the few that i know that actually finished.

I was homeschooled, and I finished as well. I never was really gung-ho about pioneering until just before and after getting baptized, which happened when I was 15. A few months after baptism I auxiliary pioneered. I planned to do it on a continuous basis, but I learned TTATT a few months later. I think public school would have been a better option for me because I wasn't always motivated enough to do my schoolwork. I did do a lot of learning on the side about things that interested me, but I am weaker in certain areas and I hope it won't hurt me too much in college. Three of my cousins pioneered through most of high school, and only one of them got their diploma.

I think that homeschooling does work for some people. But JWs shouldn't do it, because it becomes an excuse to make secular schooling a low priority and to make "spiritual education" the focus.
