  I Look Death in the Eye

  i have always had trouble breathing.

  in track i was great for a quick burst of speed in the 50 yard dash, but couldn't move enough air in and out to keep myself going for the longer runs like the 330. i had sleep apnea really bad, with the classic symptoms where i stopped breathing for a while and then suddenly snorted myself awake gasping for breath.

  for most of my life, surgery wasn't an option due to my jw lifestyle and employment choices (cleaning business = no insurance).

  you know what i'll do? first, i'll save this to my hard drive and print
  it out later. then, i'll think about what you said here and comment
  more, but on the first read, i'll offer two thoughts on what your
  ordeal more or less confirms...

  1. regardless of the profession, we are surrounded by incompetent
  people. i have had this fear for some time. your note does little to
  calm my fears.

  2. your epiphany while in the midst of a drug-induced haze was scary
  to read, as i'm sure it was to endure, but probably correct. the moral
  you provide is most worthy of serious consideration.

  good to have you still around. man, what an adventure.

  it does! it has biographies and its Mysteries of the Bible
  is excellent. something for everybody.

  Wow! That was great!

  Try reading it sometime in the backyard when the only thing you can hear is
  the wind blowing through the trees. Helps you get a better feel for Martha's
  going away party…

  I loved the part of apologizing to children. I can never recall a time in
  my childhood that an adult ever apologized

  Among the many things that moved me about this story, this is near the top.
  I can't remember, either, of being apologized to, not so's it stands out in my
  memory. I think most people still have a big problem admitting that they are
  wrong.

  Like you, I apologize, whenever I'm wrong, but especially to my daughter.
  I don't mind that she knows that I make mistakes. I figure the earlier she
  sees that, the better off she'll be. It's funny, though. When the time comes
  for her to apologize, it's the hardest thing! Me having her say those two
  little words is the most painful thing for her. It must be genetic. I don't hear
  "I'm sorry" very often.

  Mrs. Carter set a good example in many ways. I wish I'd met her. I guess in
  a way I did.

  Good poem with a good message. Growing up a JW, I wasn't allowed to
  dream, to choose what kind of life I wanted to live. Most of the occupations
  required 'higher education' and that was taboo. As a result, I've been 'old'
  for many years. Not any more. I'm getting younger by the day!

  Thanks for the poem. I'm glad you're here and am looking forward to
  the stories YOU have to tell.

  The Natural Law fallacy and Homosexuality

  there is a fallacy of logic that is so common that few people realize that it is, indeed, a fallacy of logic: the fallacy by appeal to nature.. one argument against homosexuality goes something like this:.

  the natural use of the reproductive organs is obviously to make children.

  using these organs in a way that cannot produce children is unnatural and thus ethically wrong.. .

  Jan,

  Deep shit. I came to the topic late, but half-way down I was thinking along
  with several of the others: "so what's your point?" Glad you clarified it.

  As I mentioned on another thread, I don't understand "male" homosexuality,
  and you pointed to the most likely reason why: aesthetics. Otherwise, I
  couldn't care less what people do as long as it doesn't involve me against
  my (or anybody else's) will. The bible's arguments against it don't carry much
  weight for me.

  Good for you. I asked a friend not long ago how they'd react if their child
  came out of the closet. They cringed and said they'd have a problem. I
  had/have a hard time understanding. I don't care what my children do
  for a living, if they marry (or who), where they live. I just want them to
  be happy and come close to reaching their full potential. Life is full of
  uncertainties, but one thing they will always be able to count on no
  matter what: Daddy loves them to pieces.

  Point taken -- we agree. I guess I was overcome during a moment of deep
  frustration, wanting to have my brain intelligently tickled by my fellow
  ungodly, doomed-to-hell, will-die-at-Armageddon apostates, and looking
  over the board saw a plethora (cool word, huh?) of fred this and fred that. I
  almost started to feel sorry for the guy. I mean, he can't help it if all of his
  neurons don't fire and the blood flow to his brain is restricted. His momma
  dropped him when he was a kid -- give him a break already!

  I knew there were three reasons, but between the time I started the thread
  and actually started to write, I forgot what they were. ;-)

  1. Fred is intelligent

  I don't read all of his notes (a huge understatement) but I have to say
  that if there have ever been signs of intelligence, well… I musta missed it.

  2. Fred is funny

  yeah, but only in twisted sort of way that more often takes advantage of the
  reader's imagination.
