Bill Hickman reporting - "Lawyers acting for the New Zealand Branch of the Jehovah's Witnesses Church dominated the first day of proceedings in Wellington High Court on Monday, arguing the church should be exempt from inclusion in the Abuse in Care inquiry.
In the judicial review, the church said it was beyond the scope of the inquiry as it did not operate institutions that took children, young persons or vulnerable adults into care.
The church's counsel were seeking to draw a line between abuse occurring among members of the church and an opportunity for abuse created by the church taking people into formal structures of care.
They said only a third of the statements made to the inquiry by survivors alleging abuse involved Elders of the church, and each of these had occurred in private settings.
Lawyer Sarah Jerebine described a 13-year-old girl abused by an Elder while on a family holiday as an example being beyond the inquiry's scope as it occurred in a family setting.
The church took up the majority of Monday's proceedings, its lawyers outlining 17 points backing its arguments for the court to consider.
Early in proceedings, Judge Rebecca Ellis said the repetitious nature of the arguments sent a message that they were more about obfuscation than clarity.
Ellis was critical of the church's handling of allegations of sexual abuse. She highlighted examples of abuse - provided by the church - where incidents of sexual connection involving a five- to six-year-old girl, and another involving a 15-year-old girl, were treated as adultery.
"How they address sexual abuse is by categorising it as adultery. That's not victim-focused."
Shayne Mechen, advocate for survivors of abuse in Jehovah's Witnesses followings, attended the hearing. He said the stance was the "same rhetoric" offered by the church countless times.
"They're saying 'it was an individual it's not the faith', and yet the individual was an Elder and the Jehovah's Witnesses are appointing these Elders. So what is it? [Victims] are not going to get any physical life help. They're not going to be cared for."
The hearing was set down to continue Tuesday, when the court will hear from the Abuse in Care inquiry's lawyers.""

It's definitely possible. Here during the pandemic, elders and circuit overseers were having publishers look up online tax records, social media, and website directories to compile territory spreadsheets for letter and phone witnessing. We were told to compile pertinent details, try to find out who was there and what they might be dealing with (like ages, marital status, etc.) Made spreadsheet after spreadsheet with that kind of information. Even got to see the house plans on some of the homes if the town website had a detailed enough tax record program. We were told to go on GoogleMaps and do a visual virtual "drive" down their street, see what the homes looked like, if we could tell if they might have kids, what condition the home was in. Never got consent from anyone to compile that data. Could be it's coming back to bite them, like this older article in 2018 shows...

It's been fizzling toward that direction for a few years anyway.
The local congregations here didn't even keep much literature in stock. Half the time if somebody ordered something specific, it never came in. For the campaigns, each person was only given a small handful of tracts or magazines (like 5) by their group overseer. Some publishers printed their own invitations to the Memorial or went to a print shop to order copies of invitations to distribute for the conventions because the congregation didn't provide any.
The elders weren't required to forward the numbers of placements to headquarters for a long time anyway, just forwarding the hours. (The rank and file still put down the numbers of placements, but the secretary wasn't forwarding them.) That's part of why the elders here weren't motivated to dole out literature. They knew it didn't matter.
This wasn't a last minute move by the GB. It was planned.

The Governing Body doesn't really care about God's Name. They don't really care about people.
The whole reason the top headquarters people have been promoting the "ministry" all these years is the same reason Charles Taze Russell started this business - for personal gain.
C. T. Russell used to be a businessman selling gents goods. He traded it in for what would become a tax-exempt pyramid-scheme religious-book-selling business.
The guys at headquarters are at the top of the pyramid scheme. They don't care about "ministry". They care about money and power.
They get their power by maintaining the unscriptural hierarchy and they maintain the money flow by selling product. It used to be their product was publications, but that's changed. Now it's real estate.
They don't need the "ministry" part for sales as much, but since it is the cover for their real estate scheme, they have to maintain it. The cart thing is an easy way to do it. So is the website thing.
It's all about show. They can change the reporting to try to look like they care, but it's only because they didn't care about the ministry hours anymore anyway. They don't get their money from selling publications at this point, they get it from automatic monthly donations and from selling real estate.
