IMPORTANT: JW Congregation in Britain loses case!!!!!!
by Viva la Vida infrom the ruling: .
"we note that the congregation and the charity are one and the same entity in this case, so that whilst the congregation understandably wishes to follow its religious practices, its status as a registered charity brings with it, in exchange for public recognition and tax reliefs, a requirement to maintain certain standards of behaviour.
it also brings with it the risk that, if there are concerns about its activities, these might be inquired into by the respondent.

For those of us (at least I hope there are more than just me) who are foreigners and thus neither being familiar with the British judicial system nor with its specialized terms and language - could someone provide me/us with a "Charity vs. congregation for dummies" version? -

Something a CO once said.
by cappytan in"there are only three reasons you should miss a meeting.
fever, fracture or funeral.
everything else is a sorry excuse.
-
TheOldHippie
"I remember a talk from a CO who related the experience of a couple whose child died the day of the meeting and the couple went from the hospital to the meeting that night!!!"
There might be many reasons for that, which I will not comment upon - but has the thought occurred to you that they felt that was the best place for them to receive comfort? Would it have made it better if you heard about Catholics losing a child and then seeking comfort in their church?

Memorial attendance up or down on last year?
by freddo inas per the title.
and was the one you attended at an early or late time of the evening.. any partakers?.
-
TheOldHippie
Attendance will have a slight variation according to what day in the Easter week it is observed. If at the beginning or end, numbers will be significantly up, if in the middle it will either decrease or stand still. But the trend is upwards, although in these waves. Locally, it was up, double the number of publishers, and with three partakers. -

Memorial - Most depressing holiday ever?
by nevaagain inwe - as in we jws - say that the memorial is our only holiday.back in my young days when i was still living at home, my mom would buy us (or as we got older and made our own money, make us buy) new suits for the memorial.
my mom would put on her best dress which she probably only bought for the memorial.
she would say, it is our only holiday so we should dress special for it.

Nothing special? What should it be like, then? Healings, shouting, talking in tongues, extatic people? I think contemplating on the importance of Jesus' ministry and sacrificial importance is special enough. -

Polytheism in the Book of Daniel, a late second temple religious document
by fulltimestudent inas jehovah's witnesses we committed ourselves to a blind belief in a monotheistic judaism that was automatically transmitted to a new religious organisation, started (we were taught) by jesus.. that's the premise which this thread will discuss.
i suggest that sufficient evidence is available to throw doubt on both those beliefs.
so this thread will argue (over about a week-hopefully) that:.

I think I too will go and buy myself a book, quote from it, and state that "this is the truth, because this professor says so." Stay tuned! -

"While the Jehovah Witness is a recognized religious sect in Indonesia, it is expressly forbidden for any religion to actively promote their religious doctrine to differing sects or religions."
You're free to be a Christian - but shhhh! don't tell anybody. Exactly how dictatorships work. Like in the old East-European countries and the USSR - it was allowed to be a Christian, AND it was allowed to be an atheist, but ONLY atheist propaganda was allowed, NOT Christian. Finely tuned rules. Indonesia is a corrupt Moslem country, and like in many of the Moslem countries - and Hindu - , Christian Groups are allowed, but not foreigners and not preaching to Moslems. There are no JW missionaries in Indonesia, so these were tourists trying to spice up their holiday a bit thru invigting to the Memorial, but that clearly was too much for the smiling and friendly Indonesian authorities. Fascist corrupt nations are themselves alike.

JW Son dead in German plane crash, no big deal!
by noolite inseems to be a jw connection with the crash after all, but it wasn't the co-pilot as some had surmised.
the father of the only american male killed in the crash weighs in with a very mild assessment of the mass murderer, and doesn't seem overly concerned about his son, now deceased.. ---------------------------------------------------------------- .
"the parents of an american victim of the french alps plane crash said on 27 march they feel sadness for the parents of the co-pilot rather than feeling anger for the loss of their son.. robert tansill oliver, a jehovah's witness, lost his 37-year-old son robert oliver calvo in the germanwings plane crash.. "i don t feel anger.

The plague, livestock. Question
by James Mixon insorry if this have been covered.
exodus 9;6-7 and exodus 9:19-25.. livestock killed twice by god??
contradiction?
-
TheOldHippie
If you check various translations and footnotes, you will se that "all" in Exodus 9:6 also is translated as "all sorts of". So all is not always all of a species, but a certain amount of all of the different species. -
