How long was a "creation day"?
What is wrong with "independent thinking"?
Who was the "slave" before Russell?
If Jesus and God can't be the same person, then how can Jesus and Michael be the same?
Keep asking questions, it means you're still free.

Here's my view of JW's. They are mostly like other people. The bad parts of the religion are this: 1) No independent thinking; JW's are told NOT to think for themselves, just accept whatever the WT says. 2) Isolation; don't associate with anyone not a witness (This is why your friend is afraid to take you to his KH. 3) Shunning of all former members.
These three things are what cause people to call them a cult.
Just as with any religion, there are JW's who are active and still break the rules. The difference is JW's have to be much more secretive to get away with it.

i think it is fair to say that whoever wrote genesis had a very limited scientific understanding of the world in which he lived.
most of nature was a mystery to him.
let us examine what he did "know"; namely, god lived in heaven, which was in the sky.

Your reply has only reinforced my point. Most people who say the bible is "true" really mean it is truly symbolic. "True" to them is not the same as "literal".
In the era of the bible writers, rainbows and lightning were truly miraculous, therefore the sole provence of God.
In 1886 C.T. Russell wrote "The reproduction of living organisms,
either animal or vegetable, is beyond our comprehension, as well as beyond our power--hence miraculous." (God's Divine Plan)
In Russell's day reproduction was "miraculous" and the sole provence of God. Today the reproduction of humans (cloning) is not restricted by a lack of knowledge, but by man-made laws prohibiting the use of available knowledge.
