You make some interesting points. I agree many JWs don't appreciate the magnitude of the generation change but then again, the WTS follow ups about the nearness of the end only added to the confusion. (The WTS website still has "old-light" as well. I discussed the matter with my parents after the Watchtower with the change was studied, (must have been Jan 1996). I thought it was a pretty big change and was quite upset by the change. (One of the first things that pushed me out the door.) My mother's attitude was, in her words, "well, I believed that already."

In December last year on a trip to the UK I visited my sister. While shopping I met a guy from my old congregation. When I asked how things were he volunteered that many were depressed and down and said it was related to the "generation" change.

I think the events of the past month have raised the hopes of some Witnesses. When this all blows over and we return to fairly normal conditions many of these will become depressed over the lack of delivery on so many promise the WTS has come up with.

Or should I say dear sister, because your mom sounds just like mine; is she the same person?

I wrote my mom in January when the article in the British Medical Journal was published. Her response included at the end a statement about how Hitler and Christendon had tried to destroy Jehovah's people without success. (I only sent a link to the BMJ site!)

She never repsonded to my follow-up and neither did my brother, the Elder, because the questions were too taxing. I haven't asked her about the UN thing yet. I am still hoping the story will get greater coverage. However her response will be much like your mom's I guess. We can only try, something will stick eventually,

uk jw's who wish to limit the involvement of the wtb&ts in their personal lives should be aware that on tuesday 23rd october the provisions of the data protection act empower you to obtain copies of all information your local congregation is holding on you, this now includes written data as well as electronically stored information.

you may also make request to the uk branch office in mill hill.. the request needs to be made in writing to your local congregation 'data controller'.

How does this apply to ex-pats like me. Are they under law to provide me with information regarding what they have on me. They must have a record of my appointment as an elder, my DOB and date of baptism. They must have a date of my deletion as an elder and a copy of my letter? Can I find out what they have on me? I may be non-resident but I am still a British citizen.

PS I have the relative safety of writing from overseas however, they can snub me knowing I am unlikely to pursue legal action from so far away. Should I write my MP too, the one I can no longer vote for.

The WBTS has a pathetic history of predicting Armageddon, which I hope you are aware of.

ROFLMAO! Does You Know know? You should read the history of HIS predictions for Armageddon.

I don't mean to be rude to you at all. Welcome to the board! If you haven't been here very long you won't know about the YK character. His biggest disappointment was the failure of the Y2K problem to bring about global economic disaster.

What I find here about the excuses for the WTS in that "Jehovah allows a transgression" and then cleans it up in his good time, is why does he use ex-members of the religion to do this?

The majority of people who raised questions to the UN bear no allegiance to the WTS. Yet these ones questioned the UN, which started an investigation that caused the guilty "knee-jerk" reaction of the WTS disassociating.

Does God "inspire", sorry "direct" former members to clean up his organization? Surely, God would direct his own people.

I guess some will say there are be examples from history of how the Babylonians were used, (blah, blah blah, in 800 words or more) but then again some people can make an excuse for anything and no matter what the wrong the Watchtower is always right because they say they are.

HELP - Elders want to talk about Disassociation

i thought that this was all out of the way when 2 weeks ago my wife & i handed in letters of disassociation.. we have been since then trying to adjust & just when i thought i was getting somewhere - starting to feel normal again - i got a phone call 1hr ago from our presiding overseer saying that they haven't announced it yet & wanted to talk.. he is a very nice guy & i was caught totally unprepared so i put him off - said i would ring back later - 2pm'ish uk time.. now i have that horrible feeling in my stomach again - help!.

basically, when it comes down to it i don't think we want them to come over - it will open us up too much & i don't want that.. also, though, i want to sort it out; so i am thinking of just chatting to him for a bit on the phone.. i didn't really want to do this since it could knock their faith & also i am not fully ready to argue all of the facts with elders.

however it looks like i will have to.. anyway when it boils down to it they can argue away all of the facts like the un thing etc.

Hmmm,

The "Cartilla" issue from what I remember from COC is a card that Mexican men have to obtain that shows they have done basic military training. This military training (as reservists) is part time and takes a year. However, it is quite common for young men to pay a fee or bribe to an official to get the card without having to do the training. Mexican JW men were allowed with the full approval of the WTS and the GB to pay the bribe to get the card. What is worse is that at the same time in Malawi JWs were being beaten and even killed for refusing to buy a political card that was little more than an ID card.

If I have some of the facts wrong I am sure others here will add to this or correct me.

Faith not shaken? Well yours isn't in the WTS anyway because your just as much an apostate in their eyes as anyone else here. Lots of others who think the WTS is virtually God are deeply upset.

We are all with you and will try to support you in this. They won't DF you as you have already DA's yourself. It gets messy for the elders to do that and DA letter is far better from their standpoint.

Since you have a commitment that the announcement will be made next week you have the opportunity to let others know why you are doing this before the announcement is made. Let them know. They are going to consider you as dead now. At least some may be helped by knowing why you have quit.

When you feel more comfortable e-mail me. We may have some thngs in common.

It wouldn't be so bad if the real changes were actually about the Bible. Unfortunately, most of the wacky and hurtful dogma of JWs have no basis in the Bible. Blood transfusions aren't mentioned and it takes a lot of scripture twisting to get the WTS idea of no blood except the kit form kind. Monthly hours, reporting time, shunning family members, sexual practices, contraception and sterilization to name a few have no basis in the Bible yet these things change every few years.

Let's not forget that the necessary changes included changes in ideas about aluminum cookware, vacinations, organ transplants, alternative service and voting. It seems that plenty of other religions had the right idea way before Jehovah "directed" the Watchtower to get it right.
