Hi carmel,
For those of us who have researched and given much serious thought to the whole concept of god. And have come to a personal conclusion that it doesnt exist for us,nor does any organized religion,I resent being compared to Russel and the term "falling into a trap".

Im kinda surprised at the denigrating tone of your post.

I started seeing this before I attended uni. I didn't find what I learned from atheistic lit at all. I began with exploring history,topics that interested me. Example, "Lives of the Popes". One book led to another(doesn't it usually? lol)
It's all out there. Their own history condemns them.

University expanded my research by opening up new avenues of exploration. Anthropolgy,psychology etc. I came to the conclusions I have on my own taking an open minded ,objective non-emotional approach. I was interested in verifiable information.

In the back of my mind,I always hoped to find support regarding christian concepts. I didn't. I found it wanting. From there,I reassessed much of my thinking. Realizing I could no longer suspend reason and logic regarding this. I'll get back to you later to clarify this. Hugs,Tina

Yadirf by this very definition describes himself. He hasn't attended meetings in over 20 years! So anything he says is merely bullshit lol. Why don't you ask him why he doesn't go to meetings,which means he has abandoned the wts. We know from what the wts says,only those who stick close to jeh(org) are the ones who willed be 'saved'.......

you all have much greater problems and common mental flaws than just being "former" jw's.. let me explain.

many (i won't generalize all of you) of you are on here ranting and raving about the jw's did this and the wt did that.

Try investigating the above issues before you continue to put your big ole foot in your mouth again.

Hi Norm,

Thanks for the thought provoking posts. The historical data as well.

One only has to to study the history of christianity to see it for what it really is.

From it's very inception,christianity has tried to make the 'world safe for truth,justice and love' by using cruelty,punishment and censorship.
They rarely if ever admit that they've been the primary instigators of the forces of 'evil' they labor so hard to combat.

Christianity is a mass of contradictions.

From a histroical standpoint,they see no logical flaw in making people suffer to end suffering.

They see their actions as totally selfless-even if they'r burning you or torturing you. After all,it's for your own good and the good of humanity (their thinking) :>.

Christianity's bloody and heinous history has a lot to do with it's black and white thinking. The world is more ambiguous than unkind but they seldom appreciate this subtle distinction.
Throughout history christians who have this black and white moral code have spent their lives following rather arbitrary rules because they expect concrete rewards for such. They don't understand that virtue is its own reward.
They keep expecting some higher power to step in and praise the saints and punish the sinners,lol.
Christians invented heaven and hell for this purpose,but as history shows the after life isn't soon enough to settle this score.
Historically speaking they have felt they have to step in and do gods work. And from this dysfunctional mindset, they have initiated and perpaetrated some of the most evil crimes in history.

alright, i'm fed up with the shit going all one way!.

today i had my periodic phone conversation with the family back in the uk.

as usual, they veered the conversation around to "the truth".. "did you go to the meeting?

Nothing I've done has really worked with my jw family members,so Im not gonna pass along what is ineffective.

But in the not so distant pass on h20,silentlambs was/is having some probs with family members.
He got some really fantastic examples of approaching them by letter. I'll see if I can find that thread. If anyone else remembers what Im talking about,please,can you help expat by posting a link?
I think it's really helpful and relevant to expats situation.

Larc,I've seen from your posts that you have a wonderfully investigative,analytical and insightful personal style(and a great sense of humor too btw :>)
Due to my borg upbringing,I didn't begin develop these until dissonance hit me hard,later in life. So what you say makes sense to me. I wish I had that impetus at 18 :> It took university to really open my eyes ,and effectively deprogram me. But,better late than never right? Thanks for the excellent topic. I've gotten much from you and all the responders! Thanks all.

well i know this isn't like my usual posts but bear with me.

i know there are blowups on this board, and i guess not everyone gets a long 100%, 100% of the time, but we all have a bond that keeps bringing us back--pain.

we here have all suffered at the hands a merciless cult, and i know many have sufferd more then the rest of us can ever comprehend.. i miss my family and friends, somedays it's almost more then i can bear, but get by.

Hi Intro,
I do think an application of cognitive distortions can be made using Piaget theory on developmental stages, that might put those raised in the borg behind the gen pop.
Using the Piaget model,the moral(rather than cognitive) distortions would come during the concrete operational and formal operational stages. What he calls moral realism and moral relativism. The problem using this 2 stage model is that it is unable to capture the variety of judgements seen in childhood,adolescence,and adulthood.
I think you would find contrasting Piaget with Kohlberg's model of moral/developmental reasoning,noting the Preconventional level(obedience and punishemnt orientation) quite interesting.(I find Kohlberg much more relevant to to JW childhood re:moral reasoning)
