  Society Movie from 1967

  in 1967 or 1968 the society had a film out designed for teenagers titled "heritage".

  it was the most pathetic, but hilarious propaganda movie i ever remember seeing.

  does anyone know if this movie is still in existence?

  OK, here goes. All teenagers want out of life are:

  It reminded me of Playhouse 90, shot in black and white. . . .

  I think it opened with a family argument scene. . . Does anyone recall the young boy putting his hands over his ears so as not to hear the fighting?

  As wasasister reminded us, there was an appeal to all the "benefits" of living a moral life.

  Is Hatred Really Just "Loving Less"?

  the bible says the jacob hated leah, the gal he was tricked into marrying after seven years of hard work at minimum wage.

  for many years watchtower publications have tried to take the sting out of jacob's disdain for wife #1 by saying that he really didn't hate leah, just "loved her less".. i think he hated her.. its not that hard to understand.

  if a man works seven long years, each night going to sleep with visions of a certain bright-eyed girl and then gets stuck with her dull-eyed plain sister, resentment could build.

  I think if you check the account you will find he did not have to wait for 14 years to get the pretty girl nookie. It was shortly after the honeyommon with Leah, but he still agreed to work another 7 years. Just a minor clarification

  for many years watchtower publications have tried to take the sting out of jacob's disdain for wife #1 by saying that he really didn't hate leah, just "loved her less".. i think he hated her.. its not that hard to understand.

  Something else stikes me as unfair.

  Jehovah "closes the womb" of Rachel because Jacob hates Leah, obviously denying him, for a time, offspring from his beloved. Now, if he wants kids, he HAS to get to KNOW Leah. She becomes sort of an unloved surrogate. Pretty strong punishment for Rachel, actually, just because her husband loved her more than the her sister substitute.

  I think he hated her.

  Its not that hard to understand. If a man works seven long years, each night going to sleep with visions of a certain bright-eyed girl and then gets stuck with her dull-eyed plain sister, resentment could build. After a grand total of fourteen years of hard labor, he finally gets his dream girl, only to find that her eyes have lost a little sparkle.

  Yeah, he hated Leah. Almost as much as he hated Laban.

  Why the unnecessary Watchtower spin? Is it because Jacob was one of the "good guys" and shouldn't be portrayed with such a negative emotion? The "Insight" book indicates that Jacob obviously did not "hate" Leah, because he continued to have sex with her. Is that enough proof for you?

  A tiny modern sub-plot of this whole Abraham-Jehovah exchange is that these scriptures show that Jehovah allowed his expressed will to be questioned without retribution, whereas the GB and congregation elders' decisions cannot be questioned with impunity.

  yet, when someone who makes that claim has absolutely no problem explaining it to you and telling you of it... blow by blow... you do not believe?.

  I don't doubt for a moment that many street people are mesmorized by Shelby. She talks a good game. They may even feel the "holy spirit" as they pray together for the Lord to come into their life, banishing the methyl amphetamine, heroin, dust or grass or alcohol.

  But its a lame ploy on JWD forum.

  Dear Shelby:

  Its no crime for you to adopt the style of writing you love so much as your own. Writing in a certain "style", whether Dickensesque or Shakespearean or Kirouacian, is nothing new.

  Still, it strikes me as an affectation, a slight impediment to real communication.

  Several years back when Julian Lennon recorded a couple of albums eerily mimmicking his father's work, Paul McCartney encouraged him to record in his own "style".

  Weren't we all a little circumspect when Moroni translated the gold tablets of the Book of Mormon into the phrasing of the KJV?

  About street language: Its not necessary. Allen Iverson speaks English very well, thank you.

  Shelby's quaint, but acceptable, first century style salutations remind me of a sister in one of the congregations of my past.

  Almost annually, her speech would take on a decidedly sanctimonious tone, remininscent of the Pauline letters. Her comments became more profound, ethereal. The Scriptures became her personal letter. When these episodes manifested close to the spring equinox, she partook of the emblems.

  Her grown children came to recognize in the development of these symptoms, a need for a medicinal dosage adjustment and sometimes a period of hospital stay.

  This is not to imply that her profession of anointing was less valid than anyone's, although twenty-five years ago, as a much younger man, I was party to trying to "reason" with her about her "calling".

  Why going 'door to door' this week felt so good!

  yes that's right, i actually went door to door this week!!.

  well okay, not trolling for new dubs but as a collector for the national kidney research fund.. earlier this year i'd done the same thing for marie curie cancer research.. let me share a few things i've learned.. most people were genuinely pleased to see me at their doorstep - can you imagine how alien that felt?.

  they were pleasant, willing to chat and, with few exceptions, donated to what they could see were worthwhile causes.. i would return home after collecting with a feeling that i had actually accomplished something.. someone, somewhere at some point in time might actually benefit from the time that i, and many other volunteers, put into this charitable work.

  My wife and I have 50+ years as JW's. After several years of JW inactivity, depression and hurt, my wife signed on to be a 2000 U.S. Census taker. Using the people skills she had acquired as a seasoned JW and her instinctive honesty and straightforwardness, she was a big hit.(I think she could have been elected mayor of our small community)

  Just as she used to tell our Bible students that the Kingdom Hall was filled with imperfect people, she told the respondents that the census was filled with stupid questions, most that she herself wouldn't answer. Most people laughed and filled out the forms anyway. It was wonderful therapy for her to be so well received after years of door-to-door rejections as a JW and finally bitter rejection by JW's themselves when we took in our "adult" son.
