"You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore"
Many of the younger ones will not recall this statement of Richard Milhous Nixon in 1962 after losing the California governor's race. The words were primarily directed at the press, who Trickie Dickie felt had been biased against him.
Nixon recovered from his wounds and went on to become president in 1968.
The "Goodbye" thread, statement, gesture or speech is a staple of the feeling of rejection whether it involves the loss of a political race by a few hundred votes or the disappearance of a thread after a few meager replies. It is a lash back at those ignorant ones who failed to fully recognize the worth of the one saying "goodbye."
I have enjoyed Farkel's threads. My wife especially appreciated the recent one about the WTBS' pseudo-shepherding and she is not a JWD afficianado.
But I will not join the chorus humbly begging his return.
He is a man whose brilliance and warts are out there, fully documented by his posting history.

Of course it is against the law to kick a kid under the age of 18 out of the home
"Yeah, but it still happens" Avishai Numerous experiences recounted on the internet from the 60's and 70's seem to indicate this. TMS

My "kid" is 33.
But when he visits, it feels very good.
Everything valuable to me is under one roof.

Latest Watchtower study... Still discouraging higher education!!!
by Doubtfully Yours inone of the paragraphs read that 'if in the area where you live you need higher education after you graduate, then the young person must speak with the parents in order to help them balance the schedule so that he/she doesn't neglect spiritual things'.
alright, i thought, that's a somewhat balanced point of view; i thought, good they're coming along with the times we live in.
yeah, right!!!

I sense things are changing.
Too late for my father, myself and my son.
We all succumbed to JW direction and suffered economically.
Many young Witnesses are now going to college.

Just As A Matter Of Curiosity..........
by hillary_step injust as a matter of curiosity i was wondering if any of you know of anybody who has read raymond franz' 'crisis of conscience' and who actually remained a jw?
i have sent and lent this book to a number of people within the wts, even a co, all of whom left eventually.
one person remained due to domestic issues, but resigned from all his duties and remains as such.

HS,
Even as a JW, I was never afraid to read critical material. It generally took only a moment or two to note some factual error and I would smile self-assuredly and scan the rest of the tract, letter, pamphlet etc.
After reading a couple of pages of CofC posted on the internet, that self-assurance disappeared. The excerpt concerned a governing body meeting considering a proposal to adjust the start of the last days to 1957 to coincide with the Sputnik satellite and subsequent "signs in sun, moon and stars." The idea was voted down. But just the thought that Schroeder, Kline and Suiter would seriously propose it and the fact that the doctrine change died because it lacked the necessary votes was disillusioning to say the least.
So then I ordered the book from Amazon . . . . . .

So many cogent comments . . .
perhaps a little tunnel vision on my part in describing the crime as "most heinious"
as farkel, ohiocowboy, nobodytoldme pointed out: there are many crimes of the WTBS
Balsam alluded to the parental responsibility law we have here in the U.S. We used to refer to the age of majority as 21. In many ways it is now 18. So some JW parents of "troubled" teens wait until there offspring's eighteenth birthday before packing their bags. Why is a Christian religion more concerned with a "legal" responsibility than a moral one?
HoChiMin: " If I would not guide and assist my own child in a time of need WHO ELSE WOULD?"
That's a wonderful quote!
TMS
ps: Witness parents and their children live in fear of disfellowshipping. When young ones encounter problems, the focus is on keeping them from being disfellowshipped more than it is helping them to be good, productive, moral people. This, of course, reinforces the "double life" syndrome.
