Ur both bright young people, but uve gone way "beyond what is written" in ur Watchtoweresque spin on the Cain & Able account. Jehovah, the Great Communicator gave us no evidence of Cain's misbehavior prior to being humiliated for his blue ribbon vegetable offering. Actually, the Mosaic Law code which followed reinforced the notion that Jehovah just was a huge meat eater, especially of fatty pieces with blood dripping off the altar.

Even if Cain had been a bad boy before his attempt to gift Jehovah with his best, do you think Jehovah handled the situation well? Do you think it would have hurt the almighty to have tabled his lust for meat fat temporarily and at least pretended to like the lad's offering? Actually, Jehovah, being allknowing, omnicient, knew that Cain would react the way he did, but blew it off because he was such a damn meat lover that he didn't care who got hurt in the process.

As Judge Rutherford used to say: "Face the Facts." Jehovah God was not a good parent. He repeatedly showed favoritism on an individual and national basis. He favored Israel, but slaughtered the men, women and children of surrounding countries. He had incorrigible youth stoned by their parents. He pardoned murderer/ adulterer David, but killed his innocent baby. He's watched many tsunami waves kill thousands of his children without lifting an almighty finger.

Imagine two children. They both decide to make a picture for their daddy. One paints a picture using watercolors, the other draws a picture using pencil.

Daddy really likes watercolors, so he congratulates the one boy.

Daddy doesn't like pencil drawings, so he 'does not look with any favor' upon the other boy. You can imagine the smile (countenance) falling from his face as his gift is shunned.

AFTER that, the pencil artist gets angry and developes social issues (For which the father yelled at him) that eventually lead to him becoming a murderer.

It's called psychology... Something that Yahweh consistently proves to be ignorant of.

Jehovah never had a father. He never knew the feeling of being slighted, less loved than one of his favored siblings. Based on the above, was the first incident of sibling rivalry mishandled by Jehovah? Did he bear any responsibility in the tragic results? Jehovah's Holy Word, the NWT, describes Abel as a "herder of sheep" and his brother as a "cultivator of the ground", both honorable professions. Both men felt an obligation or a simple desire to give something back to their creator.

Both men gave Jehovah what they had worked hard to produce. Since Jehovah preferred animal fat to vegetables, he showed favoritism toward Abel and rejected Cain's offering.
This caused Cain's "countenance to fall" in the archaic speech used in 1960 when the NWT was written. Today we would simply say: "Jehovah hurt Cain's feelings." What
should Cain have done differently? Should he have stolen some "firstlings" from Abel's flock and served them to Jehovah? Or should he have killed some other wild beasts
and offered their fatty pieces to the god of the universe?

What responsibility does Jehovah bear in setting the mood for the animosity between brothers? If Jehovah does not show favoritism, but instead graciously accepts the generous
results from the "sweat of Cain's face", does Abel lose his life? What if Jehovah had given Cain a hug and said: "Son, these are the juiciest mangos I've ever eaten? " First century murderer Paul wants us to believe Abel's sacrifice was of "greater worth". So? Children are
different and show their love in different ways. Is there any excuse for a father to accept love from one child and not another.

A Jehovah copycat, Isaac showed similar favoritism in dealing with son's Jacob and Esau, even breaking the law to favor the younger one. The results were not good.

Ever met a "deep" JW?

my guess is probably not, or if they were they weren't that much of a jw or their perspective isn't so relevant to jw thought - i trust those that have been out a while understand what i mean, hindsight and all.

what i'd like to do is draw out a contrast that some may have by way of their personal experience, maybe a "worldly person" or other non-jw that is an example of someone that has a great and helpful perspective on life, vs. the jw one.

there may be people from this board, but i think even a specific telling moment with a simple thing could be good or even better.

A.J. was not an intellectual. Not sure that's a negative. He finished the second grade before becoming the family breadwinner in the coal mines. He always said something profound, difficult to understand. He was of the so-called "anointed" but very earth-oriented. Do you remember those colored pencils, half-red, half-blue. He wore dozens of those out, studying his Bible, underlining key points.

He could survive on the soil without greenbacks. He composted religiously, collected soft water in rain barrels and never heated with anything but wood.

His comments and prayers were too wordy for the Kingdom Hall. He was called on with reluctance.

His main attribute? He liked me.

some nice humor in the thread titles. I did not get my invitation to "follow the christ" this year. So at least no one can say I declined.

Last year a 13/14 year old blonde boy caught me on a ladder painting. "Don't stop painting!" he commanded with a self-assurance way beyond his years(probably an elder's boy). "I'll just put this invitation under the floor mat." After he left I peaked at the invitation. I had to google the location, a convention center in Katy, TX, west of Houston just 350 miles from my home. No meeting times were given, just dates. What if I had driven to Katy? Would I have found a motel room within 50 miles? Were there any seats saved for handbill respondees at the convention center? Would I have been given a visitor's packet with a printout of the Kingdom Songs, JW codewords, and proper assembly decorum? Did the Watchtower really expect anyone to respond to such a vague invitation from a pre-pubescent lad? Are any of these campaigns a modern-day fulfillment of the seven trumpet blasts mentioned in Revelation? or the seven bowls? or seven lamp stands? or a partridge in a pear tree?

there is no kroger store now on east broadway in north little rock, arkansas.

it was demolished to make way for the new alltell arena.

the fifty-yard line, that black night club, is also gone and the pawn shop that was next to it.

Great pics, purplesofa! The Kroger at Pershing & Pike? LOL! That was a Safeway store that must have been included in the buyout back when. It's a relatively new bldg. Safeway pulled a very foolish cost-saving move just before they sold the AR stores. They terminated the manager at the Pike store along with four other over-50 store managers. They ended up settling a large age-discrimination suit.

Two dingy, older stores survived into the 70's. The building in front of the Kroger warehouse on Pike was a store. It received no truck deliveries just goods two-wheeled in from the warehouse in back. There was also an old Kroger store in Levy(not Camp Robinson) across from the cemetary. The building is very small and you would never guess its history. I think a Seventh Day Adventist Church is nearby.

There are actually two very old communities along Pike Ave. and it's extension MacArthur. To the west of Pike from the Arkansas River to the base of Scenic Hill is the old town of Argenta. Many of the sidewalks still have the inscription "Argenta Paving Co." although huge tree roots have broken the walks up in many places. The lower part of Argenta was subject to periodic flooding from the river. In the 70's and 80's old Argenta was a mix of very elderly living among needy, rent-subsidized families as the area decayed. North of I-40 is the community of Levy, a patriotic blue collar community which is probably now in decline with the loss of Wal-Mart. Was your aunt talking about the covered bridge on the south side of Burns Park?
