Knock Knock...."Who's there?" They came to MY DOOR!!
by Terry init is a peculiar experience.. once you are out of the kingdom hall forever and haven't been in field service for many years...... a knock comes at your front door and you answer it only to find:.
jehovah's witnesses!.
that happened to me......finally.. in the last decade i don't think i've encountered anything other than mormons or drug ministry fund raisers at my door.. but--this time, it was the real thing.. it was two sisters and they weren't much older than their 20's.. they didn't know i was satan himself, of course and i was reluctant to interrupt them and tell them.. what to do---what to do?

Terry,
You're more forthright than I was when an earnest 35 year old Hispanic male and 11 year old son approached me recently. I simply asked him if his god was almighty. I let him explain omnipotence and omniscience to me. We talked about the psunami of a few years ago and how some indigenous folk knew enough to recognize the danger and run to higher ground. I suspected that his god knew enough as well to at least call out a warning.
I asked him if his god treated people equally regardless of their station in life. He said that his god did. We reasoned about the penalties in the law for the ordinary Jew who committed murder and adultery. I asked him why his god treated David differently. Was it because he was a king?
He considered carefully everything, never once shielding his young son from the conversation.

For those who new to Dylan, his Thirty Years With Columbia Records concert in 1992 is a must see, either in DVD or VHS. Stevie Wonder, Booker T and the MG's, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Neal Young, Steve Cropper, Kris Kristofferson, Tracy Chapman, Ron Wood, John Mellancamp, Eddie Vedder, Richie Havens, The Clancy Brothers, Johnny Winter, June Carter and Johnny Cash, Lou Reed, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Roxanne Cash, Shawn Colvin, Chrissie Hind, The Band, Tom Petty, Roger McGuinn all do masterful jobs in interpreting Dylan songs.
Dylan kept me company during all my JW years and beyond. I was in my '59 VW bug listening to KGR Seattle when I first heard the line "you'd rather see me paralyzed." It was too brutally honest for my sensitive JW ears. Joan Baez' version of "Forever Young" means something special to me. I played the song "Tomorrow Night" every evening for a month on my way home from work as my min pin was dying. “Tomorrow night. Will you be with me when the moon is bright? Tomorrow night. Will you say those lovely things you said tonight?”
"Idiot Wind" sings anger to me, "What Was It You Wanted?", sarcasm, "Shooting Star", imagery.
Oh, and "Highway 61 Revisited". My wife and I and young son took a trip down Hwy 61. We talked about the civil rights marchers, peeked at the antebellum homes, got out and stretched our legs at the famous "crossroads". That was many years ago.
Been to a couple Dylan concerts. Yes, he changes the tempo, chords of almost every song to make them hardly recognizable. He occasionally has fun. At Little Rock's Robinson Auditorium, he introduced Ronnie Hawkins who came on stage in a red sport coat and sang with Bob "My Gal Is Red Hot" Bob said he listened to that song as a teenager and had been looking for Hawkins for years.
BTW, Garth Brooks does a nice job on "Make You Feel My Love".

a lame spinoff to AllTimeJeff's "Trained to Argue"
by TMS innot wanting to clutter atj's reasoned thread on jws' art of persuasion, this thread attempts to trace my personal evolution in style, technique and substance relevant to jw proselytizing.
even so-called secular sources have called attention to the general progression from foot-in-the-door arguers of the 50's to the pet-the-pooch, broad smiling, "not-here-to-change-your- religion" marketers of the 70's, 80's.
door to door skills have dumbed down a bit since then, but that's another story.. i cut my field service teeth on the american standard version, the 6-8 minute sermon, the 10-15 minute back call sermon and the anti-trinity, anty-hellfire, anti-immortal soul scripture lists.

"I'm sure there are similarities with todays JWs in the door to door preaching work. There are always going to be ones that can talk to people concisely with bible knowledge intact, but most JWS that are out in service are really just trying to put in their hours to shrug off some inner guilt thats been impressed on to them."
Absolutely. Not saying that one era of JWs were more persuasive than another, but just that the recommended methods have been adjusted by "mother" over the years.

I cut my field service teeth on the American Standard Version, the 6-8 minute sermon, the 10-15 minute back call sermon and the anti-trinity, anty-hellfire, anti-immortal soul scripture lists. Scripture flipping requires quick fingers, a canned rhetorical question to lead into the next flip and conveying the false expectation to the householder that your annoying little rant is within a millisecond of finishing. In my personal case, no trinitarians or hellfirers were converted, no arguements were won, no seats needed to be added to the Kingdom Hall.
A dramatic shift in personal style was influenced by my Uncle Joe, the quintessential door to door preacher. Uncle Joe exuded movie star, not Pentecostal style charisma, flashed his white teeth, was beyond relaxed, accommodating, listened keenly and could not be insulted. He broke down scriptures slowly, simply, making eye contact, using the person's first name. In the post WWII 50's and 60's young male Jehovah's Witnesses needed a 4-D or Minister's Exemption to avoid the military draft or prison. Since 18-20 year olds are never actually ministers or pastors of an actual congregation, the Watchtower put an interesting spin on things. They said the doorstep was the pulpit for JWs, that the folks in the territory were the congregation. The Secret Service didn't buy that arguement and followed young JWs out in field service, sometimes interviewing householders. I suspect that my uncle was one of the rarest of JWs who actually fit the Watchtower's definition of minister, with many in his personal territory actually knowing him by name. He kept notes on all of the, too, interested, apathetic or violently opposed.

DEEP DISCUSSION: Christ means annointed.........does this create a paradox?
by EndofMysteries inif you actually look at some interlinear new testament, you'll see in the direct greek to english translation, annointed, then you will see annointed is put in as christ.
if every instance of christ was replaced with annointed, how would many scriptures read?
well for one jesus would be called jesus annointed.
-
TMS
EOM: Google "annointed", of the millions who spell it that way I'm sure we have enough credibility. You can add considerable credibility if you can show me anywhere in the bible where spelling and spellcheck have anything to do with understanding the bible and the truth? Your lack of critical thinking or understanding the scriptures won't change by checking spelling and grammar on online forums in which most of us probably don't care."
Actually, I should have just overlooked the error. How you spell, reason or pontificate matters little.

Nathan suffers from barkolupas, an ailment usually associated with holding trees rather tightly in cold, damp West of the Cascades weather. Also, at his age, his rings are probably shot, leading to a profound increase in noxious emissions. Please be kind, young ones. He will not pollute our environment much longer.

The increasing number of the anointed. Comments, anyone?
by dgp ini'm very much enjoying "the orwellian world of jehovah's witnesses", by heather and gary botting.
now, this excerpt comes very much to the point of this thread, i believe:.
page 145: "still, in 1975 the society clearly feared a continuation of the upward trend in memorial partakers, and in an article entitled "annointing to a heavenly hope - how is it manifest?
-
TMS
The surge in partakers is not surprising at all in view of Romans 11:22 referencing those partaking unworthily who would be "lopped off". The slave has taught us so well that unexpected new partakers were simply replacements for those who only fooled us for years into thinking they had God's blessing when in actuality they were leading secret double lives of depravity.
Is it not obvious that so many of this era's professed anointed were adulterers, homosexuals, drunkards, revilers, even apostates. Lest the heavenly government be understaffed, Jehovah, in his infinite mercy and wisdom, has seen fit to replace hypocrites with freshly anointed "sons of God" who will not spit in the face of undeserved kindness.
tms
ps: It is with deep regret that it is now known that Joseph F. Rutherford is reported to have been one of those "lopped off". His adulteries, alcoholism, and back-stabbing, double-dealing takeover of the Watchtower Corporation seemed to rub the Heavenly Appointment Committee the wrong way. He has been replaced by Marcus Applebee, a 28 year old ministerial servant from Jackson, Mississippi. Brother Applebee serves the local congregation in the Magazine-Territory department and as a regular pioneer.
