He is an elder, and also pursued his academic career while being a witness. It is not an academic who became a witness, but a witness becoming an academic.

Islam More Lenient on Apostates than the WTBTS!
by 00DAD inislam more lenient on apostates than the wtbts!.
this morning i came across this thought provoking comment in a cnn news article:.
harris zafar, national spokesperson of the ahmadiyya muslim community usa, does not mince words on the subject, stating in a huffington post opinion piece that "islam prescribes absolutely no punishment for apostasy.".

Interestingly, the Ahmadiyya Muslims are not regarded as true moslems by other moslems.
They are in fact regarded as the JWs of islam by many....

WORLDS APART~TEEN JW MOVIETONIGHT ON SUNDANCE @ 7 EST.
by AK MCGRATH ini was just flipping through the channels to find something for the woman i care for to watch, and i came across a movie tonight on the sundance channel called, "worlds apart".
it is about a jehovah's witness teen who falls in love with someone who is not.. although i can't watch it now, i am taping it.
i couldn't look to see if it is a documentary of sorts, but i bet it will be interesting to say the least.. it's on at 7 pm tonight, eastern.

I found the placards displayed somewhat strange and unusual for JWs. Then I realized it was accurate (at least in denmark) having seen photos from an international assembly there with such placards being used)....

I was told Rolf Furuli is an elder
by mankkeli inhow could rolf furuli be an elder considering his secular background?.
a friend from norway said he is the service overseer in his congregation.
does anyone have any info to validate this claim?.

In the Norwegian version of wikipedia it also stated explicitly that he serves in the capacity as an elder.
Furuli er medlem av Jehovas vitner, og fyller vervet som eldste. På 1970-tallet arbeidet han som en reisende tilsynsmann. Han har skrevet bøker ombibeloversettelse, teologi og bibelhistorisk kronologi.
furuli is a member of the Jehovah´s witnesses and is an elder. In the 70s he was a travelling overseer. He has written books on bible translation, theology and bible historic chronology.

Hi!
He is most certainly an elder, in a congregation in Oslo.
He is highly regarded as an "expert" witness, even used sometimes on tv/radio etc (at least in times past).
He also used to (if he still does I do not know) give talks at district and circuit assemblies.
Why should being a professor disqualify him for being an elder?
There is even an entry of him in wikipedia:

I have been to many countries, having attended witness functions in various countries. There is a difference. E.g. in Scandinavia, the Danish witnesses are regarded as liberal, e.g. allowing brother with beards to give talks also at district convention level, whereas in Sweden, dancing is not allowed at weddings in some areas.
IN Portugal, I experienced an elder drinking a glass of wine before conductiong the Watchtower study an hour later. Unheard of in North. Europe.
Culture definitely plays its role.
I found American witnesses as well as German witnesses to be more extreme than their Scandinavian counterparts.

I told the baptist church pastor that I'm gay!
by TimothyT inhis reaction wasnt as liberal as i hoped it would be.
he said that we needed to discuss it.
however, gone are the days where im putting myself in the firing line and not sticking up for myself.

Hi timothy!
I think it is nice that you keep a faith, and that you´ve started on a new spiritual journey. Wish you the best and hope you´ll be welcomed as you deserve. I occasionally attend a gay- accepting lutheran church and it is nice to be accepted.

So then, which publication did you HATE by the society?

Worldwide Security Under The prince Of Peace stands out as the book I openly disagreed with in some parts.
I was the book study conductor at the time, and when the paragraphs discussing the destruction of people at Armageddon, using terms like good riddance to them and explicit details on how they were destroyed, I just stated that we do not want to go into more detail of this. also I refrained discussing the option of going to other planets etc that was briefly touched upon in that book.

I think that for the majority of witnesses a softening up stance on the shunning issue will be a relief for many.
