Being a JW Used to Be Fun :-)
by snowbird inwe found some people who were happy to welcome us into their homes, even offering us food and drink.. sometimes, they would flag us down and ask for the magazines, walk miles to the kh meetings, come to our defense if someone got ugly or rude.. now, jw's are either routinely ignored or outright vilified.. no one respects them anymore.. sad.. .

I agree, it was a very good article. It is always best to allow things to be seen from the angles of JWs as well as former witnesses.

I remember a lot of happy times, field service, get togethers, assemblies, international assemblies, meeting "brothers and sisters" abroad in many countries, attending meeting in other countries/taking part in field service in other countries, reading the magazines, yearbooks...
Also: Most witnesses I knew (living in Scandinavia) read newspapers and followed the news...some people more than average, some people less. But it was not a trademark being a witness and being ignorant.

District Assemblies, Were they a Financial Burden to you? They Cost $1200 to $2000 in some lands!
by RottenRiley inwhy does the watchtower place a harsh burden on it's low-paid and low-skilled army of witnesses?
the district conventions don't really add much value, you have witnesses making minimum wage with both husband and wife working while the elite witnesses can afford to burn a ton of cash making the poor witnesses feel worse about themselves.
i remember, some of the really poor witnesses would bring their own "cooker" to the motel to make "top ramen" and mac&cheese" while the company men had the elites take them out for "surf and turf" and other great feasts, the poor witnesses get the shaft was they are told how lucky they are to financially struggle to afford to pay for their hotels.. .

I have never heard anyone complain about financial burdens when I was a witness. But I do come from a country where there is far more egalitarity and where people can live a decent life even when having so called minimum wage jobs... So I reckon this is a much bigger problem in the US.

a thousand a dollar was not very pricy.... Most witnesses I guess would afford that, at least in my country...

MEXICO | Jehovah's Witness Family of 8 Massacred including three Children
by jwleaks ineight family members killed in mexico massacremexico | november 17, 2013. mexican police found sunday a family of eight, including three children, stabbed to death and tied down in their home in the northern city of ciudad juarez.. a two-year-old boy survived the attack and was handed to neighbors, local police said.. the chihuahua state prosecutor's office said the assailants apparently forced their way inside the house and killed two men, three women and three children between the ages of four and six.. their mouths were covered with duct tape and their hands and feet were tied.
neighbors said they heard gun shots but authorities said the victims had stab wounds.. neighbors said the house owner was a car salesman.. the family was supposed to attend a meeting of jehovah's witnesses when they were attacked inside their home on sunday morning, according to testimonies.. they were discovered dead after members of the congregation went to look for them.. ciudad juarez, which borders the us state of texas, was once the deadliest city in mexico amid a turf war between drug cartels.. more than 10,000 people have been killed in the city since 2006 but the murder rate began to decline in 2011.. local officials say the drop in violence is due to tougher policing and crime prevention programs, but security experts believe it began to wane after the sinaloa drug cartel defeated the rival juarez gang.. read latest breaking news from newsmax.com http://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/mexico-crime-murder/2013/11/17/id/537112#ixzz2kziajt8f.

That is not entirely true. There has been articles in Awake! in the past of witnesses having been victims of crime.
