I believe this is what Elizabeth Smart suffered from during her captivity. Stockholm Syndrome - it got its name from the 4 Swedes held by bank robbers in the 1970's who began to empathize with their captors. It used to apply just to hostages, but they think many people suffer in the cults and when people are in abusive relationships, they do this in order to save their life.

Stockholm Syndrome
by Phil inare there any readers that have studied or are aware of the term "stockholm syndrome" and its application to cults?
i have heard of this as it applies to people who are brainwashed in countries where torture is used to alter the thinking of people away from their past habits.
i have never heard it applied to the jw organization and its practices.

How BIG was YOUR JW book-bag?
by Scully inwhen i was replying to nicolas' question in another thread, i used the following scripture to show why jws are always so tired:"the scribes and the pharisees have seated themselves in the seat of moses.
therefore all the things they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds, for they say but do not perform.
they bind up heavy loads and put them upon the shoulders of men, but they themselves are not willing to budge them with their finger.

My bookbag was fair sized, I remember it was black and I bought it at Kmart back in the early 1980's. I remember it being full of Watchtowers and Awakes, which mostly I placed at laundrymats. AND I remember throwing it away in the dumpster when I left the Watchtower. What a wonderful feeling that was!

Do You Still Feel Obliged To Answer To The Elders?
by minimus in.
for some, there is real fear that they must speak to the elders if they decide to stop by your house .some don't know what they will do if the elders begin questioning them.
what will you do if they want to talk to you?

I view seeing an elder as mostly an annoyance. There was a whole contigent of them at my grandmother's funeral (grandma wasn't a JW, but Dad insisted on giving the poor woman a JW funeral - how depressing is that...) I don't even want to think about them showing up on my doorstep, which I think they will any day now. I hope not, I sincerely hope not...

by LuckyLucy intoday i was at work and a jw slipped a watchtower and awake in the mail slot.in the awake there is an article titled "is there an unforgivable sin?
" here is a paragraph that caught my eye.. some people who were once faithful christians have purposely drawn away from god, perhaps because of bitterness, pride, or greed, and are now "apostate fighters" against god's spirit.they willfully oppose what the spirit is clearly accomplishing.

Have You Ever Written A Letter To the Society?
by minimus inwhen i was a kid, i remember my family regularly visiting other friends, including a brother that was the bible study servant.
every week, he would send a different letter to the society on a variety of subjects.
when our families would meet, he would ask us the question and we would do research or give our opinion on what we thought the society's answer was going to be.

I never thought about writing a letter to the Society. I always thought it would go in File 13, especially if it were the least controversial. I just humbly agreed with (most) everything and continued my journey with the Borg. Then 10 years ago this month, a light went off in my head (because of the Branch Davidian crisis) and I knew I was in a certified cult.

Yes, isn't this cool? They're elated in Utah tonight!
SALT LAKE CITY (March 12) - Elizabeth Smart, the 15-year-old girl who vanished from her bedroom nine months ago, was found alive Wednesday in a Salt Lake City suburb with a drifter who had once done work at the family's home, police said.
''Miracles do exist,'' said Tom Smart, the girl's uncle. He said Elizabeth was in good condition and reuniting with jubilant relatives at the Salt Lake City police department.
Elizabeth was wearing a wig when she was found with the drifter, a man known as Emmanuel, and an unidentified woman, authorities said. Relatives of the drifter, whose real name is Brian Mitchell, have described him as a self-appointed prophet for the homeless.
Police offered different accounts of how Elizabeth was found. A spokeswoman for police in suburban Sandy said she was in car stopped by police after two people called to say they had spotted Emmanuel. Another officer said the group was discovered standing along a road.
Witness John Ferguson said the arrest involved a man who looked like a transient and two women wearing unusual clothing.
He said the women had ''longer clothing on, blue almost like a pillow case ... over the face almost like a veil. They were all just kind of calmly talking to the police,'' Ferguson told KSL television.
Mitchell was in custody at the Sandy police station.
A celebration erupted in front of the Smarts' home, with neighbors and members of the family's Mormon ward holding blue and yellow balloons.
''I'm just overwhelmed. I just couldn't be more happy,'' said neighbor Charlotte Hamblin, 62.
Elizabeth was found at an intersection about 20 miles south of her home. She disappeared last June, part of a frightening string of incidents involving children that included the slayings of 7-year-old Danielle van Dam of San Diego and 5-year-old Samantha Runnion of Orange County, Calif.
A month ago, the Smarts held a news conference where they released a sketch of Mitchell, who did work at their home in November 2001. As recently as Tuesday, the family openly criticized police for not devoting enough attention to the former handyman.
Mitchell's sister called authorities with his identity after the family's Feb. 3 news conference. The man's stepson, Mark Thompson, gave investigators photos of Mitchell and said his stepfather was ''capable'' of kidnapping a child.
He also said Mitchell believes he is a prophet who needs to preach to the homeless and has no source of income other than handouts.
Elizabeth was 14 when she vanished early on the morning of June 5. Her 9-year-old sister, Mary Katherine, said Elizabeth was taken by a man who may have gotten into the house by cutting a window screen near the back door. The sister pretended to be asleep, and she said the gunman threatened to hurt Elizabeth if she didn't keep quiet.
The top potential suspect, Richard Ricci, a handyman who once worked in the Smart household, died Aug. 30 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while in prison on a parole violation. He said he had nothing to do with the kidnapping.
Investigators have said they believe Ricci was involved but may not have acted alone.
Last month, Elizabeth's parents said Mary Katharine had come to them recently to say Emmanuel bore some resemblance to the kidnapper. This week, they chastised police for not going after Mitchell.
''They should have caught this guy by now,'' said Tom Smart. ''The police are too vested in Ricci.''
Elizabeth's father, Ed, was less harsh but expressed his ''frustration'' at public statements made by police dismissing Mitchell as a potential suspect.
Police said they followed up more than 16,000 leads from the public in addition to those they came up with themselves.
Over the summer, the Smarts held twice-daily news briefings and thousands of volunteers combed the foothills of Salt Lake City, searching under brush for any sign of the blonde girl.
The family often got calls from the police alerting them to grisly discoveries that might be linked to their missing daughter; they wanted the Smarts to know before the story hit the news.
Sometimes, the news beat the police. Hands and feet had been found in a canyon, or bones had been discovered in the desert. The Smarts would call police to ask if it was Elizabeth. Every time, the answer was no.
Children's advocates were elated by the good news.
''We are very, very relieved,'' said Marilyn Ward, director of Child Search, a national missing children center based in Houston. ''This should help the cause of missing children everywhere. We are thankful she's alive. It gives hope to people to never give up.''

Boy did I love watching Dallas during its heyday. The production company would roll into Dallas once a year and film all their exterior scenes in the hot Texas sun for the new season. I loved watching that show, every Friday night. BUT I loved it's sister show even more: Knots Landing. Everyday Thursday night, I would be at my sister's house and watch it with her. Those were the 80's!

I remember when I was about 4 years old, my parents took me horseback riding. At the stables, the big huge horse in front of me started to relieve himself. The horse was pooping like crazy and I started to scream because I had never seen an animal do that before. I remember that event from my childhood like it was yesterday. I like the analogy that the WT is horse poop. It reminds me of what happened and how I screamed bloody murder when I saw it. That's how I would react if the WT came at me again...lol
