  Religion in the USA and Elsewhere

  trying to follow media reports in the us and elsewhere, a question occurred to me.. in the uk, religious beliefs are largely irrelevant to most people.

  even those who claim adherence seem to do so in a fairly vague way and it doesn't seem to make much difference.. in the us (it seems to me) it's a much bigger issue.

  the evangelical christian movement seems quite powerful politically in various iterations ("family values" etc.

  In US politics, "Muslim ban" is code for "Brown-people ban". Saying it's about religion allows the racist segment to openly support the policy without being called racist. However, there are some true-believers who think everyone should be Christian. You can tell which they are by asking if they think all other religions/denominations other than theirs should be banned too.

  the wt for this upcoming sunday 10/07 is especially precious in its standard double speak.

  aren't we so grateful to the f&ds who directly mediates our relationship with jesus christ and give us the food we need at the proper time?

  i dunno....maybe i have anger issues with the the wt?.

  No Watchtower shipment

  it was announced at our clam that there "was no shipment of the october study editions of the watchtower" and that they were asking if people could just use electronic or make their own copies.. is this just happening in ohio, or did you hear the same thing?.

  If you're referring the "Our Christian Life and Ministry" workbooks... It's like a super dumbed-down version of the old "Kingdom Ministry". I'd place the discussion/material at a 3rd grade level. For one of the sections, the entire KH watches a video demonstrating how to do a call with an incredibly stupid/agreeable house-holder.

  What changes would stabilize JW membership?

  i've seen many topics about how things are changing or might be changing in jw doctrine/culture.

  some have extrapolated how those changes would result in declining jw membership.

  i'm curious to know what changes others think would stabilize those numbers.

  btw - I meant doing away with disfellowshipping would harm their numbers, not harm individual JWs. Shunning is an evil childish practice.

  I've seen many topics about how things are changing or might be changing in JW doctrine/culture. Some have extrapolated how those changes would result in declining JW membership. I'm curious to know what changes others think would stabilize those numbers. Perhaps a list of things to watch for in the future that indicate JW leadership realizes there's a problem and decides to do something about it. I'll start off with a few ideas:

  • End door-to-door preaching
    
  • Give up on the no-blood doctrine
  • Meetings only once a week
    

  I think doing away with disfellowshipping would do more harm than good to their membership.

  one of my best friends is in the security business.

  he told me the other day of how the watch tower has been in contact with his good friend and business associate.

  evidently they are inquiring about putting cameras into every kh so that they can do 24 hour monitoring.

  Perhaps they'll introduce it as a dial-in upgrade, then make it available to everyone, and then switch to a broadcast from HQ instead when a KH is sold off. This would allow them to close the rural KHs that can't be merged easily.

  eeeeeeeeeeew... now I wished I hadn't taken a peek at that particular set of workbooks. October 15th through November 4th are cringe-worthy. Here's my paraphrased summary:

  October 1-7: You have to trust us!

  October 8-14: Forgive people.

  October 15-21: You're a nobody! Obey and do more! Don't retaliate!

  October 22-28: Stay away from the scary worldly people!

  October 29 - November 4: What we say is true (now go preach it)! Don't share anything false (ie - what we say is false).
  
  How afraid do you have to be of losing people to put this out every week?
