"Truth or Consequences" is a great book!
by Dogpatch in"truth or consequences" is my story about the good and bad times in the watchtower organization.
it is my hope this story will help others know what motivates a person to join a cult and what motivates a person to leave.. "truth or consequences" is a true love story of two young people who faced many obstacles as they proved their love for each other before they became jehovah's witnesses.
they believed their love and loyalty for the watchtower organization was the only way to show their love for god.

Hi Roy! I read the copy of your book that I bought the day of the signing in Lodi. You did a great job, and you have set an inspiring example for me. Anne

Any of you worked for Primerica? My experience at their "seminar."
by truthseeker ina few weeks ago, a brother called me out of the blue and asked me if i was interested in working for him.
he told me he had his own business and was looking to "expand.
" he told me i "was a special person" with "good qualities" and "capable of going places.

I have to say something in defense of Primerica!! They got me out of 'the troof'. My JW son had been approached by them and was interested, so I got him on the internet and we began researching this company along with general info on MLM companies.
Next thing you know, we ran across a web page discussing another MLM, Amway, and it also mentioned the Watchtower Society. It referred to them both as BORG, and Star Trek fans that we are, we immediately got the inference.
Well-taught little JW that he is, thanks to me, he didn't want to look any further in that direction, but It rattled around in my mind for a couple of days, and I finally went looking into it to see what it had to say.
I found my way to freeminds.org, and the rest is history. I am now a happy exjw, and it is all thanks to Primerica. Unfortunately, my son is still stuck in JW land, though I did steer him away from MLM involvement.

Truman show as metaphor for JWism?
by seattleniceguy ini saw the truman show when it first came out in 1998, and was impressed by the movie, and also a bit unnerved.
however, i just read the screenplay, and i have to tell you, it is incredible.
for me, this is one of the most incredible stories i have seen or read.

Great Movie! I was very attached to this film as I was exiting, and it is still one of my favorites. The courage Truman must show to overcome all the implanted roadblocks in his psyche really touched me.

Book Studies in Your Home
by Xena ini'm curious (was reading the other thread about book studies and got to pondering) who had a book study group in your home and what was it like.
and did you go to any homes where they made you take your shoes and socks off and put on slippers or anything like that?.
we had one in our home....got counciled about having the demonic disney movies out, but for the most part it was a pretty good experience.

I had Book Study in my home for the last three years that I was an active JW. It was one of the first things I had to figure out how to get disentangled from when I found my self AWAKE! from the Witness mind control. We had a decent time at it, some goodie nights, and I enjoyed having people come to the house. I will admit to being one of those who made people take off their shoes (not socks). I have a very light colored carpet and most people are not careful about how they wipe their feet. Some grumbled at first, but they got used to it. In our cong., it was not always easy to find homes for the BS, so I guess they figured they better cooperate, since they had a place to go.

I collect books, books, and more books. Then there are cats of all kinds, including the 4 live ones I have. And "TV Guides"....which I have been collecting since 1967. I have many boxes of them. They are a real trip down nostalgia lane for the TV buff. I wish I had a place to display them. Maybe someday.

Home school
by Globetrotter inmy son told me the other day that he and his sister are just about the only kids at the kh their age that go to public/private schools.
almost all the other kids are home-schooled.
i was rather shocked.

I home-schooled my two sons. They are in their mid 20's now. We were al JWs when we did it, but this was in the 80's and we were among the first.
I did it, not because of any particular JW reason, in fact, some would say things about the schools being the territory for kids, as if to say that we were neglecting that natural avenue for kids to witness.
No, the reason for me was that I have a fairly low opinion of the educational system, and I wanted to be the person who had the major influence on my children's learning and development. I had them, and I wanted to teach them. I loved doing it. It worked well for us.
By the time they got to high school, the local school district had instituted a home study program that would allow them to come in once a week for lessons, and do their work at home. They got a state issued diploma.
Both my sons are very bright people, and though they did not attend college, as JWs were taught when they grew up, they are both well above the average competancy level that somes out of the public educational system.
One of them was so bright, that when he got old enough to leave home, he also left the WTS. I was heartbroken at the time, but it was the catalyst that got me out as well. Now if the other one would only exercise the thinking abilities I tried to instill under the fog of JWism.

Satanic music or not (Opeth) - boundaries of JW listening material
by Frantic inas you may or may not know, some jw elders may resent some of their music thier children may listen to.. put simply, a 'death growl' is often viewed as a warped version of satan.
the band opeth use such death grow, however, are not satanic, with one reference to 'demon of the fall' (one of their songs).
they also combine death vocals with beautiful vocals, possibly the best in the business, alongside maynard james kennan (a perfect circle).

Frantic,
I was a JW for 27 years, but am currently not attending meetings any longer, though I am not under any official sanctions, not df'd. If I were still in my former JW days, I would have probably been concerned about the factors you mentioned, like the fact that some band members are professed satanists. I am not so concerned about such factors anymore. I have a much more accepting viewpoint for others belief preferences. I judge the quality of the music, not the personal lives of the musicians. Yes, art and music come from the hearts and minds of their creators, and are no doubt influenced by the beliefs of the persons involved, but I think micromanaging that factor in selection of what is acceptable to listen to, is over-rated by the Witnesses. Also, I think that gererally, this mindset engenders a considerable amount of hypocrisy on the part of most JWs. It is often excepted when it comes to whatever is attractive to a particular person, but applied broadly to the taste of others in the cong.
