The parallels between WT mind control tactics and those used by many multi-level marketing entities are what opened my eyes to the real nature of life as a Witness. Here is the document that outlines Amway techniques for controlling their cult members salespersons. See if some of them--a lot of them--do not sound eerily familiar to what you have heard from the WTS.

Went to an internet business convention back in April...was I being recruited to join another cult??
by Joliette ini went to this business convention with my friend lynnette back in april of this year here in milwaukee...and boy oh boy did it remind me of a jehovah's witness convention.
except they didnt have a lock stock and barrel legalistic approach like the j-dubs have, but bascially same messaging in a different kinda of way.
they clapped, but they actually yelled at the speaker on the stage (basically picture the arensio hall show x1000...lol) woo-hoo!!

The Greatest Straight Faced Remark Of All Time
by metatron inmany, many years ago in the brooklyn bethel factory, workers were setting up huge printing presses to produce magazines.
one of them, a young bethelite, got onto an elevator containing a number of young female witneses.
they asked him where he worked.

I one got a phone call from an elder (a routine call) in which he opened the conversation by saying "Is this truman's cat house." Now, I am female, and I have long been known as a person who keeps cats, but when I heard that, I just assumed it was a crank phone call and hung up. I guess his wife informed him of the implications of what he had said as he sat wondering why I had hung up on him. He called back and apologized. I wasn't offended once I knew it was him and that he thought he was being funny, and his naivete was really pretty funny.

Can you answer: What is "The Truth"?
by serenitynow! ini mean can someone, preferably an active jw, explain in 5 sentences or less what that really means?.
i ask because of the long post that "20571..." made on another thread about how "the truth" is better than this, that and the other thing.. what does it really mean?.

I am up at 3:00am trying to finish a very long essay for a course in Medieval literature. Part of my material comes from Umberto Eco's novel the Name of the Rose, set in a 14th century abbey. He has a take on finding truth that really resonates with me:
“the only truth lies in learning to free ourselves from the insane passion for truth”

when i was a kid, you would buy these books of "food tickets".
the tickets were traded for terrible food.

omm, nom, nom...squash cassarole. I got baptized at a convention in Little Rock AR in 1974, when they still had full-on cafeteria meals. The cooks there served a squash cassarole so scrumptious that I am still looking for a recipe to duplicate even now.

Here is one way to keep 'em off you tube.
by maninthemiddle inhere is jw-tube!.

It's a valiant attempt, but I don't think it'll keep 'em away from You Tube long. I looked around the list of videos on the site and the fare is stultifyingly JW orthodox. Examples: Video about a middle-aged couple antique shopping for a teacup that suddenly begins lecturing them about its maker; video that does "Hotel California" one better (or worse) with its no-audio tale of the devil as the inn-keeper of a seedy hotel whose beds you don't want to sleep in. Still, you gotta give someone credit for the effort.

Homosexual or Transgender Caveman?
by laverite inhas anyone seen the news report from the telegraph on the 5,000 year old skeletal remains found in prague?
the male remains were buried as a female would have been, and this brings up the question that the remains represent someone who was either homosexual or transgender.
very interesting piece.

Very interesting find.
Hey, Laverite--you sent me a pm a few months back, which I never saw until recently. It was "hi from [location]". I am wondering if you yourself still hail from this area. If so, send me another pm, and I will try to answer more promptly.

After I left the JWs, college was one of my primary goals. I now have my BA (in English) and am halfway through my master's program.
As for the poster's question about paying for it, I used the resources of my local community college (very inexpensive classes) for my lower division courses, then transferred to a state university for the rest. I maintain a 4.0 GPA, and this has put me in line for enough scholarships to pay for my tuition. Now that I am a grad student, various grants and paying assistanceships are also available. I have never taken out any student loans. From what I have read about these, I caution anyone to proceed carefully and only after due diligence research.
There is (non-repayable) money out there for the determined student, but you have to be diligent about finding out where it is and applying for it. Good grades and/or provable financial need help (file a FAFSA). Also, if you qualify for assistance given to various demographic segments, that too, can be a resource. For the record, I am a white female in her mid-fifties, so not many programs are tailored for me. Still, I have found money when I needed it from scholarships and other sources available to students.
If you want to go to college, search out the financial aid. Colleges and universities all have departments devoted to helping students connect with funding.

Being Turned In By Family
by SlipnSlide ini have read a lot of posts regarding spouses turning the other in to the jw police.
if it happened to me, i don't think that i could forgive my husband if he did this.
i would never do this to any member of my family, especially my husband.

I was ratted out by my (grown) son. He found a mildly incriminating email I had written about a support group and then took that information to an elder. If not for the amazingly effective aid of (some-time JWD poster) Hillary Step, I would have been toast at that point.
My son and I have repaired our relationship as much as we can while he is in and I am out, but at the time, I had to view his actions as a manifestation of his training--teaching that I had foisted upon him myself by raising him in the Borg. He thought he was doing the right thing by turning his mother into the congregational Gestapo. I forgave him. But I put a password on my computer after that.
