So out of all the suggestions, are you going to implement any of them? Of course. I'm just trying to give the whole story without writing a book. I'm not being dismissive but trying to give more focus to the picture so people can better understand where I'm coming from.

"CADSkin, are you sure the drinking was not to do with boredom and exercise is mearly keeping you too busy? and did you not have children?" I mainly started drinking when I was in a band. Paid in beer. When I stopped drinking, I couldn't sleep at night and I'd grit my teeth and toss and turn. Many addicts use substitution to a new addiction. This is just more healthy but no less an addiction as I have to go 7 days a week. I have 3 kids and I checked out of my life. I just drank and she took control of raising the kids. I was killing myself, no doubt about it and not slowly. She had to deal with a husband who was non-existent and yet always there. We've always been very close and if I'm not working we're together and playing with the kids. I know she has a lot of hostility towards me for my past actions and I accept total fault for that. Through therapy I found I had an obsessive disorder that made me want to die. It all stemmed from the feeling as a kid that I wasn't going to make it into the new system because I was a bad kid (8) so I just needed to die and be ressurected as a loophole to Armageddon. Tried killing myself at 12 and a bunch of times since. JW's can really screw a person up. My personal growth has been a long journey that thankfully I can now say I'm a much better person.

I would try not going to the gym anymore but I've tied it in with my sobriety now. If I don't get a really hard workout I start to feel like I need a drink. We went on a cruise a few years ago and without the equipment I had a real hard time not drinking so I had to swim laps until I just about passed out. It can also happen when we are with her friends. She'll stop talking to a friend she thinks pays me too much attention. Our youngest just went into full day school so I think that she's at a bit of a crossroads in her life. She'll say "I feel like I've wasted my life having not gone to school or worked." We have really great kids so that's not the case at all. Right now she plans on going to community college which I think may help quite a bit. I couldn't imagine just hanging around an empty house all day. I'd get stir crazy.

Thanks for all the responses. As far as diet goes, we are vegetarians and don't eat or drink bad at all. I do all the dinner cooking and I’d say the only thing I could cut out is bread, which is my weakness. I gained all my weight with 12-16 dark beers every day. We walk to get coffee and around the neighborhood when it’s nice but being transplants from SoCal to Washington we definitely become less active in the winter. My wife has been with me through thick and thin and has dealt with all my emotional and mental issues and I wouldn’t dream of ever being with anyone else. I’m a much more affectionate person in public than she is. Usually the only way I know I have a distant admirer is when I see her body language stiffen up and get real quiet. We’ve been to couples counseling and I’ve been through therapy. I try and encourage her to spend more time on her hobbies as this was one of the avenues my therapist had me use to take my mind off things. I think she lets strangers get the best of her too often. Before I went into therapy I’d say I was a much more jealous person than she was. Mostly I was just unhappy. Much therapy focused on the JW upbringing and the feeling of never being good enough so why bother.

Long story short. I’ve been married for 18 years to my beautiful wife. When I was younger I had a lot of attention due to my looks which has always made me extremely uncomfortable. I used to have a debilitating shyness and low self esteem and eventually just ended up trying to drink myself to death. I gained about 80 pounds in 10 years due to booze. During this time my wife had 3 c sections and also put on weight. I stopped drinking 2 years ago and couldn’t sleep so I started going to the gym to tire myself out. I’ve lost most of my extra weight and put on a lot of muscle. My wife tries to lose weight but can’t due to age/babies/motivation to work out. So, here’s my problem. I now am getting a lot of attention from females. They will come up to me and try to flirt or stare even when I’m with my wife. This always leaves her very depressed and can knock her down for quite a while. She acknowledges that I’m not doing anything wrong but still takes it out on me at times. I try and do all I can for her to build her self esteem and be loving but she has now come to a point where she doesn’t like going anywhere with me due to her saying we no longer match and she doesn’t want to compete with 20 year olds. I don’t think this is true at all but I need help convincing her of this. All the flowers in the world and all the times I tell her she’s beautiful aren’t helping. I encourage her to come to the gym with me but every time she does she says someone is giving her dirty looks and staring at me. This makes me very uncomfortable as I’m now a pretty happy person and just feel people are being nice. Any advice would be appreciated.

I listen to Skinhead Reggae myself. My favorites are Rudy Mills, Desmond, Toots and the Maytals, Symarip. I also like rocksteady, ska and some dub. I have about 5000 records and I'm in the process of starting a radio show linking Reggae and Punk on a station here in Washington.

"The last of the flamboyant leaders of the WBTS was Nathan Knorr, and he always travelled first class, and insisted that the society book two seats! Evidently he hated travelling with anyone beside him, so he kept the set next to him while he sat by the window. "
Actually the airline paid for the 2nd seat. Would you want to be in that seat on a long flight?

Saved From Suicide article on jw.org
by LostGeneration inhttp://www.jw.org/en/news/by-region/world/saved-from-suicide/.
ironically, the first two "examples" have the nice jws directing the householder to a doctor.
too bad no such instruction is given to the elders dealing with suicidal jws.... some of the other examples have the typical jw suicide antidote- meetings and becoming a jw.... .

A good psych. will be able to quickly and easily find the source of all the JW's self esteem and worth issues with little or no diagnosis.

If you've been married 13 years I'd say you and your husband are doing just fine. My wife and I have been married 18 years and had the same responses to our dating as teens that you did. I want my girls to marry late in life after having experienced dating many people to find the right one. Relationships are hard on their own without other people interfering. My wife feels the same way thankfully.

Jack Murphy stadium San DIego in the 80’s an entire area suddenly cleared out of their seats opposite where I was sitting. Turns out a skunk was in the back corridor and had sprayed.
