The UN bashing decreased once the WTS became an NGO. I thought they would have gone back to bashing them again when they disassociated themselves from it, but don't know since I don't read any of their literature anymore. I would guess that if they don't talk about the UN it's because they don't want people digging into their own past association with them.

I thought this part was very interesting:
How do these stars accept the ominous or even dangerous tone of the church that doesn't seem to be a secret?
I think it's true with any true believer, when you believe that your organization has the truth, the only truth that's going to save the planet, you're going to forgive that organization a lot of things. I think that's what's going on here. These celebrities will hear about poor treatment of ex-members or disconnection and the way families are ripped apart, and the stars just shrug it off because they believe it's just the stories of ex-members. They just aren't going to believe it.
Jason [Beghe] has said they were constantly reassured by church officials that this stuff isn't true, people are making this stuff up. They're constantly hearing from people in Scientology that people outside Scientology criticizing it are just a bunch of liars. They're inclined to believe that because they don't want to believe they belong to a bad organization. Paul Haggis is a great example where he had heard the criticism, didn't want to believe it but eventually realized the critics were telling the truth. -

Were you 'alive in '75' and how was that year for you?
by punkofnice ini was a junior borgite in 1975. i remeber looking at the calendar at work in october and thinking: 'armageddon isn't here yet.....and it doesn't feel like it will be here anytime soon either!'.
i was surprised that jehovah hadn't obeyed the superior command to bring the big 'a' as instructed to him by fred franz.
how dare god disobey the jw leader!!!!!.

I was a teenager in 1975 so my thoughts were more of boys than Armageddon. I think I was actually relieved when it didn't come. I wanted to get married and have kids before the big A. I remember talks from the platform about how grateful that Jehovah didn't bring it then because the opportunity for so many more to come into "the truth" was there. What a crock!

I don't know what part of the country you are in but maybe there are some on this board nearby and you can meet up with them on Saturday. If you are anywhere near me you're welcome to come over for breakfast.

Welcome Back...
Wannabe suggested reading some books. I totally agree. Add "Captive to a Concept" to the list.
I, too, would like to know what your wife thinks about your epiphany. Is/was she a JW and what is her feelings?
Your journey has just begun...hang in there for a bumpy ride.

MIL gives advice on how to "cope"
by AggieNostic inmy wife's parents just can't stand that we haven't been to meetings since 2005. both are pioneers, retired, active fanatical jws.. anyway, today mil called the wife and after pleasantries, stated that we should really think about coming back to the meetings so we can better cope.
my wife answered: "cope with what?
" mil: "cope with this old system of things..." wife: "hmmm... we seem to be coping pretty well now".

"Being a JW is the problem, not this system. The guilt, fear and constant boring meetings etc... makes you yearn for the New Systemâ„¢."
3Mozzies - Couldn't have said it better...my MIL tried to pull the same thing on me the other day about the economy and how bad it was. After I hung up with her I asked my husband if it was any worse than "The Great Depression"? I don't see people throwing themselves off 20-story buildings these days.
Broken Promises - you are dead on!
