When the idea hit me of using Hitch for Hitchens is exactly when I caught fire with the desire of writing the story. I had recently watched several videos on YouTube where Hitchens sliced, diced and body slammed his religious opponents in debate. His voice was fresh inside my head.

Thanks OTWO, I've been thinking back on when I was a teenager hearing all the wacky JW revelations about

"true Christian teaching" and wondering how I managed not to laugh.

The most outrageous bit of puffery has to be when the Watchtower Society decided it could get away with teaching that there was NO CROSS involved in the crucifixion of Christ.

I can hear my grandfather's voice even to this day inside my head saying, "So, what you're really saying is everybody else is wrong. Everybody is marching in the wrong direction. . . except you. Don't you realize how outrageously conceited that sounds?"

As Christian ministries go, hers is the most believably sincere in actually caring about the people as human beings.

I learned a lot watching this presentation because it contains the framework of MIND CONTROL. Without that frame around it for context, such an expose' could be seen as "he said--she said" and more of an interpretation controversy over theology.

MIND CONTROL was never so clearly demonstrated to me as in this class by this woman. I mean, I did already know this--but I just never fully REALIZED what I knew until now. We aren't just saying "mind control' to be mean or take a pot shot--it's actually going on and the perpetrators (GB) aren't making an honest mistake of self-deception. The Watchtower leaders are monsters of deceit.

Rejecting something due to unscriptural or pagan origins.....?

so witnesses reject many practices or holidays due to their "unscriptural or pagan" origins.. for example, birthday celebrations, mothers or father's day, christmas etc..... most people in the world will say "but the origin doesn't matter anymore, we follow this custom now because it's a joyful occasion that creates happy times and brings the family together".

it is still firmly rejected.. so, if the wrong origin is so important, and should result in rejecting something, why isn't the same principle applied to the actual jehovah's witness faith itself!?.

after all, the very foundation of the organisation was based on wrong understandings of the bible, far fetched teachings and doctrines, links to false religious backgrounds, pyramidology, false predictions, inaccurate beliefs etc...... using their reasoning, it doesn't matter how good something is now, if the origin was faulty to begin with?

Most of the world most of the time throughout history was pagan. That includes the Jews.

It's a simple fact.
A good dictionary will tell you what that really meant. It meant you were a country bumpkin, living mostly outside of a big city.
As city folk became more sophisticated, they looked down on those 'other' folks outside the gates. Being pagan would be the equivalent of saying "white trash" today smile emoticon
Eventually, being pagan simply meant being anything other than Christian.

JW's are poodles. They are lapdog narcissist Christians who think they are better than everybody else. It isn't surprising they have a long list of things which tick them off about everybody who ISN'T them.
They obsess, They nitpick. They parade about in self-purity.

Take, for example, the fetish obsession about THE CROSS. They reject it and pretend it wasn't used to execute Jesus by the Romans for the SILLY reason it is pagan.

Well, Romans were pagan. How's that for a fact?

What did you expect pagan Roman soldiers to do--ask the Rabbi which form of death he'd prefer?

Chinese use chopsticks, Romans crucify with crosses, get over it.

All JW contrarian nonsense is a peacock narcissism connected with showing off how holier-than-thou and special they imagine themselves to be.

If they treated each other better and learned to love and care for their fellow man as much as they adore their self-righteousness they might be worth a bucket of warm spit.

"We don't celebrate birthdays."
Yeah--and you don't feed the hungry either.

"We don't celebrate Christmas."
Yeah--and you don't build hospitals, universities or women's shelters.

"We're they only Christians who use Jehovah's name."
Yeah--especially when predicting false Armageddon dates.

"We go door to door just like Jesus commanded."
Yeah--feeding goofy religious slop to unwary folks and calling it "food."

PAGAN?
You people have so many more important problems to worry about!

As I have written previously, I crashed a discussion between a young J-Dub and his Baptist workmate who were having

a religious debate outside Starbucks. This was months ago. Since then, as unlikely as it may seem, the J-Dub and I have become fast friends! He is 20 and our discussions have been fruitful. He's done a tremendous amount of independent research about everything I've told him, and he's wide awake.

But, he isn't the only one discovering things. My eyes are being opened too--about the impact of present-day pressures on young J-Dubs to let go of all ambition in their lives!

My young witness friend is, of course, torn by his delicate status of being under age in an all Jehovah's Witness family. He wants to go to college, but he's being hard-pressed to Pioneer. He's 'going-along-to-get-along' for now, however much it is disturbing him internally.

In the course of learning the truth about the Truth, this young witness is having probing discussions with his contemporaries inside the organization. He's inquiring about what ambitions the young witnesses have for themselves.

When he told me a good J-Dub friend of his said, "I swear, all I want out of life is to be able to clean toilets in Bethel for the rest of my life," I just about fainted! He was upset by this as well.

The Watchtower Organization is running roughshod over the future by destroying the prospect for young witnesses of learning or improving in any way outside of indoctrination.

What could be a more insidious signal to the destructive force of Jehovah's witnesses than the erosion of self-improvement in its young people?

These kids are going to be ignorant, poor, and very dependent on the GB to guide their every step in the shabby, unfulfilling lives they have ahead of them. It's really going to be tough.

I personally find this hateful, poisonous, and misanthropic. . . and sad.

are you a fan of harper lee's "to kill a mockingbird"?

i read the book as a child and have read it many times since.

miss lee obviously wrote the book to entertain us, and she accomplished that.

Not to worry. I don't know that these literary critics actually serve the literary community by not taking in to account many potential readers may be discouraged by the animadversions.

After all, the number of readers has diminished to the point Book Stores are becoming an endangered species.

I worked for a company called HALF PRICE BOOKS for almost six years and you wouldn't believe how the impact of digital availability has dealt a virtual deathblow to brick and mortar sales.

Margaret Mitchell wrote only one book, GONE WITH THE WIND and I think this sort of scarcity enlarges the reader base through a sense of exclusivity, specialness and such.

Getting people to read actual Literature is more and more difficult.
