On HbO2's South African website section aimed at Physicians, they give advise as to what the target patients should be recited to be test subjects to trial use of Hemopure. Surprise! It reads:

Information for Physicians
Hemopure South Africa provides this information as a support to you while you make healthcare decisions with/and for your patient, but not to make these decisions for you. The responsibility for applying this information is yours, the healthcare professional. Should you require additional information regarding Hemopure, please reference the Frequently Asked Questions section of the website, send a comment for technical support, or call our support number.
Training guidelines suggest that the initial patients to receive Hemopure be uncomplicated cases that would allow easy interpretation of any events seen. This education program permits doctors inexperienced with this new concept of a haemoglobin solution to gain their initial exposure in an environment relatively free from complicated disease sequelae, and to best appreciate the unique and different physiology and behavior of a new and novel class of drug. For these reasons, it is recommended that patients selected for initial Hemopure administration during a doctors early experience should fall within the following guidelines:
The patient should be between 18 and 75 years of age.
The patient should have no serious life threatening co-morbidity that places them in ASA class IV & V and should be scheduled to undergo surgery
The planned intervention should be elective surgery or urgent surgery in which moderate and controlled blood loss is expected.
The patient should have actual or anticipated anaemia and suitable blood is not immediately available.
Hemopure can be administered to a patient when blood is not acceptable e.g. Jehovah's Witness. [...]

It seems that the makers of Hemopure aren't the least shy in suggesting physicians that they use Jehovah's Witnesses as guinea pigs to their product.

Question:

"Hemopure" is being advertised as a product by a company called OPK Biotech LLC. (see Wikipaedia) This company has a suspiciously simple wordpress website for the promotion of Hemopure. There is an address: OPK Biotech LLC, 11 Hurley Street, Cambridge, MA 02141 USA.

But the main website (www.opkbiotech.com) is apparently shut down.

Reading the following information from Bloomberg business website about OPK Biotech returns the following:

"OPK Biotech, LLC was incorporated in 2009 and is based in Delaware. On April 25, 2014, an involuntary petition for liquidation under Chapter 7 was filed against OPK Biotech, LLC in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts. On May 20, 2014, the involuntary petition was approved by the Court."

Is this the same company? Who is now responsible for promoting Hemopure after all? Who is behind the apparently defunct OPK Biotech but keeps promoting their products?

Edited to add:

There is a name: Gerald "Jerry" Kowalski, was, by 2011, CEO of OPK Biotech. On LinkedIn he is now presented as CEO of Hemoglobin Oxygen Therapeutics. So, clearly, the same R&D field as OPK Biotech.

New Edit: Found it! This new company is called HbO2 Therapeutics and has an official website, that lists Hemopure and Oxyglobin among their product lineup. This company is now based out of Souderton, PA. Clearly, this company inherited the legacy from OPK Biotech via its CEO, Gerald / Jerry Kowalski. On second thought, it appears that most of the current management of HbO2 was in the original Biopure corporation and then in the OPK Biotech. Why does this company keep morphing?

BTW - Hemopure isn't FDA approved for use in the US, but apparently is being used in South Africa.

Curious bit of information: On the footnote of the webpage that discusses clinical case studies, the following statement is found:

OPK Biotech SA Pty Ltd notes that use of Hemopure® is not endorsed by any religious organization and that each patient makes their own highly personal decision as to what medical treatment is acceptable to them or not.

I'm wondering if all clinical cases described involved South African JW's.

OrphanCrow let me pick your brains further on the bloodless trail:

If indeed the blood ban doctrine of the Jehovah's Witnesses is serving the interests of the JW-driven blood management industry since 1945, then, I wonder if the latest significant shift in the blood doctrine, namely, the acceptance of blood fractions, has had a corresponding move from the blood management industry?

In your timeline, do you see anything - such as a technological breakthrough in separating blood fractions - that mirrors the change in the theological doctrine (or vice-versa)? I imagine there might be one. If that connection could be established, it would be one hell of a 'smoking gun'.

Watchtower Charter-A Danger to GB?

At that time, Brother Covington stepped aside as a director to comply with what then seemed to be Jehovah’s will—that all directors and officers of the Pennsylvania corporation be anointed Christians.

Mark these words - "what then seemed to be Jehovah's will".

In the JW world, whenever present time is, Jehovah's will is unquestionably whatever is being said by the Governing Body. Dare you question it, you're questioning Jehovah himself. It doesn't matter if you're right and they're wrong; it's about authority. They have been (supposedly) appointed by God and Christ, and you haven't. They hold the real authority, and you're nothing but a tiny, replaceable cog in the machinery, no matter how high up on the organizational ladder you may be.

However, in retrospect, some of their decisions and options were clearly wrong. How do you deal with those inconvenient truths? You resort to word play. 'It seemed then to be Jehovah's will'. But, back then, whenever that might have been in the past, they were absolutely certain about it! What sort of oracle do they have on what is currently "Jehovah's will", that they can only say 'it seems to be this way'? What sort of leaders are Jehovah and Christ that they allow their supposed earthly organization to guess what is their will at any given moment?

Either Jehovah and Christ are incompetent leaders, because they're unable to communicate clearly and without ambiguity what their will is; or this Organization isn't being directed by God and Christ through Holy Spirit because simply is the work of men; or the whole God / Religion / Organization is a scam. Pick your answer.

Are You "Technically" Still A Jehovah's Witness?

even if you don't regard yourself as a practicing jw, some may view you simply as inactive, a lost sheep, etc.. if you were baptized but not disfellowshipped or disassociated, you may still be a jw---right?

your thoughts please..

I've stopped attending meetings and reporting time following my JC last September. When my public reproof was announced on the mid-week meeting, me and son stood up in the middle of the KH and walked out. I only returned for the memorial (for my wife's sake) and to my wife's mother funeral. I'm thus inactive and fading. Most people still talk to me, but only if circumstances force contact, and otherwise I'm ostensively shunned from any social activity with other Witnesses. No one has reached out to me, elders included - although I told one of them informally, that I wouldn't welcome any shepherding visit, and I suppose he passed the message along to the BOE. To my dismay, my wife went back in, and is having a 'recovery study' with a Bethel heavy's wife. I can tell she's been instructed not to discuss anything "spiritual" with me. In my professional circle of contacts, if the topic comes up, I identify myself as having been in the past a JW, but no longer actively associating with them. I've been facing a mild and prolonged depression because of this whole process, but it'll get better.
