Leavingwt - thanks for that - it is really quite sobering. I recently saw other photos from Detroit; a once beautiful hotel and theatre left to decay. Such beautiful architecture - such a shame.
Freewilly- Yes, I have just sold my home and want to wait at least until later this year to look at something else. Government injection of first home owner funds is keeping part of the market afloat at the moment, but there are more CF+ houses than there ever were previously.
garybuss - I hear you.. sometimes one has to make a rational rather than emotional decision. It was hard to sell my last house as it was really different and had great vibes, but I see an opporunity. I won't play the victim card - but seeing as how I thought the end was coming in '75 etc etc I got rather a late start (in several ways ) and property has helped me make up for it.
I appreciate the time people have taken to answer - it's all very interesting.

LouBelle - That is food for thought. I have worked with folks from SA for the last couple of years - they have taken work overseas due to local economy. I'll look into that further - thanks. (sounds like my kind of place - really!)
Oompa - Tampa is about the only place inthe US I have any idea of - once again work associates. I'll look into that too - thanks.
Hittman - It's the Detroit properties that first got me seriously thinking about the US - seems surreal in some ways....
Thanks for all the responses.

beksbks - No, I'm not American so I would need to do a lot of research before doing anything in the US - different laws etc, but property is something I'm interested in. Lots of fun (usually).
megaflower - I'm not interested in any specific property - just interested in getting a general feel for the property market that one can't get from the media.
Thanks...

Much is being made of the recent downturn in property values throughout the US. I have read media reports of overseas buyers snapping up property for very little money. The most recent article I read was in reference to property in Detroit. The financial problems in Detroit seem quite severe and I guess one would have to be game to invest there, although this is just my opinion from what I have read. I would be intersted to hear ideas/opinions from anyone interested in (or with experience of) property investment, or just information relating to the overall property scene in the US. Relying solely on the media for information is asking to be mislead. While I can look at propety sites on the net, I would value personal input/observations re trends or possible places to invest. Thanks to anyone taking the time to answer.

2008 Service Reports 236 Lands preached......No China...No Korea
by RULES & REGULATIONS inthe 2008 service reports shows that jehovah's witnesses preached in 236 lands.
the preaching work is banned in communist countries such as china(which have over 1.3 billion people) and korea.
there might be underground preaching work but not enough to even cause a concern.. my question: how does the wts explain what will happen to all these people who will never hear their message?

Well....the writers should read The Aquariums of Pyongyang - among other books
Those people are "stagering to the slaughter" anyway. Amazing that they can sit in their offices and write such trash.

There was thought at one time that by choosing/allowing the governments they had, the citizens of those countries where a witness had not been given had taken their stand - so to speak. I'm not sure if this was ever official policy or just local rhetoric. I can remember thinking at the time that this was an awfully poor argument and relied on a significant amount of ignorance (can't imagine why I didn't leave then).

For those who chose not to have kids--any regrets?
by Alpaca inwhen i was younger i didn't really have any second thoughts about deciding not to have kids.. when i think about the great relationship i had with my non-dub dad, i now wish that i had at least one child.. the decision was based on the borg's encouragement to put "spiritual interests" ahead of personal interests.
this is just one more of the long-lasting detriments to my life caused by the borg..

How are the 'people apart' apparently with greater spirituality (hope I'm not misunderstanding you here) and less tainted by the world due to their separateness, able to make specific recommendations as to movies/music that is acceptable/unacceptable? And they do make specific recommendations - or did - because I have heard it from the platform many times. Or, were those purely the personal preferences and recommendations of local elders - due to the direction of holy spirit? From my experience JW's do not have a personal conscience - openly - they have a community conscience.
