1914 was supposed to bring "the end". It didn't. WWII was supposed to lead into Armageddon. It didn't. The two biggest wars in modern history did not lead into any kind of cataclysmic apocolyptic end of times. Why should some skirmish pitching a super-power against a crazy dictator who's army is already talking about surrendering bring God's judgement against mankind?

Pentagon Threatens to Kill Independent Reporters in Iraq
by ashitaka inpentagon threatens.
to kill independent.

Hotshot reporters think they can be behind enemy lines and be safe? Who are they kidding? If the advancing army tells you to leave, you better leave. If you don't and you use electronic equipment that could be confused as enemy electronics then it's your own fault. If these reporters had concern for life then they would leave. The army(both sides) have a job to do. Anybody that isn't own their side or working for them is the enemy. In war, the enemy gets shot at. Independant reporters aren't on either side. So they could get shot at by both sides, doubling their chances of getting killed. The Pentagon says they will fire on these uplink sites. These reporters have been warned. Any that stay have sealed their own fate.

The Watchtower Letters, part 6
by NeonMadman inok, back to the juicy stuff.... after all that material on pioneering, you might think i spent a lot of time in the pioneer service, right?
actually, i was a regular pioneer for less than a year.
it didn't take me long to get into the habit of fudging my hours (as so many here have indicated that they did).

I keep coming back to read and re-read that letter. It just floors me. To actually ask for the difference back between pioneer rates and publisher rates.
You paid the price they charged you at the time the product was delivered. They can't retroactively charge you a different price.
That would be like getting an employee discount while working for a retail store and then after leaving the job the store asking back the difference from employee discount to full retail on everything you ever bought as an employee.

What if the UN fell apart?
by undercover inthe wts has incessently preached about the wild beast being the un and how the anglo-saxon world power of america-great britain was the force behind it.
what if the un was to fold?
looking at world events this weekend, i wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

Actually, I've thought the UN was pretty much useless all along. The JW's just think of it as being a big, powerful political entity because of the position that the WTS assigns it in prophecy.
That's a pretty good point. I've never really given it that much thought but how powerful(or not) the UN ever was. It would be interesting to see how the WTS would explain the demise of the Wild Beast before Christendom fell though wouldn't it?

Damage Control
by gitasatsangha ini had a close friend who left the borg before i did.
when it he made his choice, i was still having my own doubts.
but, the way he left was so abrupt, i did about the worst thing i ever have.

I can empathize with you. A very close friend that I grew up with in the borg lost a parent to death. My friend was DFd at the time. I remember going to the funeral home for visitation the night before the funeral. As I stopped to offer my condolences to the family members in the receiving line, I completely ignored my DFd friend. I didn't even look at him. I spoke to his other parent, and aunts/uncles/cousins, all who I had grown up with, but would not say one word to this person who I spent my youth with and considered a best friend before he was DFd. To this day I regret my actions that night. Every time I think of it, it disgusts me that I behaved in such a way. It was a sorry way to treat another person. I have since been in similar situations where a DFd person was present at a funeral or in a hospital visiting sick relatives. I now speak to them, offering condolences and help in whatever way I can. I would sometimes be looked funny at by elders, but none ever said anything. I was always ready with my defence though: If Jesus was present in this situation, do you think he would treat people in such a way?

Looking at world events this weekend, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. I heard talk on a news channel that the events leading up to war in Iraq could start a chain reaction in which the UN could become practically useless. Where would that leave the WTS and it's teachings/interpretations of Revelation? Just another doctrine that needs revision, huh?

Need a little help on 607 586/587....
by undercover ini remember reading somewhere a quote from a wts publication that more or less said that the bible was wrong when it came to one of the regnal years or how many years a certain king had ruled.
something like that anyway(i've got to start copying and pasting or bookmarking or something).
somehow if you take the society at it's word about 607 it creates a problem with the rulership length or starting rulership date of somebody and in one of their publications it actually says something about that time period having to be incorrect.

I looked up the Aid book as referenced by Scholar and I see references to 390 years and 40 years as foretold in Ezekial 4. In all my years of being a JW I do not ever remember studying this. Without studying the Aid book to the nth degree, I got the impression that they were trying to prove 607 via this.
What comments do you scholarly types have regarding the 390 and 40 year spans? How do they play into the prophecy of Jerusalem's destruction and when it would occur? I wish I had the mental capacities to be able to understand this without bothering people but unfortunately I don't. Thanks in advance to any that reply.

607 is a trusted and historical date will nicely accords with the secular and biblical evidence.
That's the problem. 607 is not trusted or historical by anyone outside the Society. It does not accord nicely with the secular evidence(not that's been presented here anyway) and I'm trying to wrap my brain around whether it accords with the biblical evidence(so far it hasn't).
You cannot beat the Society's calculation for simplicity
You're right. You can't beat the Society's calculation for simplicity. 537-70+2520=1914. Simple. Too simple. While I like simplicity and hate research, when I do scratch below the surface all kinds of questions come roaring up.
I thank you for referencing the Aid book pages. I will look that information up and continue my research.

Have You Ever Written A Letter To the Society?
by minimus inwhen i was a kid, i remember my family regularly visiting other friends, including a brother that was the bible study servant.
every week, he would send a different letter to the society on a variety of subjects.
when our families would meet, he would ask us the question and we would do research or give our opinion on what we thought the society's answer was going to be.

The congregation wrote a letter for me asking if it was okay to play sports.
The response was If you do it professionally it is okay, if it is a hobby it is not!!!!!!!!!!
As in any job, you have to train to become a professional. Training to become a professional athlete usually starts in high school. So technically if you are aiming to become a professional athlete, it isn't a hobby anymore. You are starting your training for your professional career in sports in high school thus staying within the guidelines of what is acceptable in the field of sports to the Society. According to that letter anyway. Present them with that argument and then the guidelines would change.
I have never written a letter to the Society. If I had a question and it wasn't answered in the publications, I made my own decision for good or bad and moved own. If I thought my decision might not fly with others of a, let's say, stricter conscience, then I usually made it a point to not include them in my quest for knowledge or in my decision.
