Jehovah's Witnesses dismayed by new magazine format from Watchtower Society.
by Balaamsass inwow.
i was surprised this week by calls from active jws complaining about the new magazine format, and more begging for money from the platform.. frankly i was surprized by this reaction since this is old news to jwn members.
i guess actually shuffling to the bookroom and grabbing the new "awake tracts" minus the inside cover forward ...awakened many sleepy, catatonic, bored jws who never read the things or go on the internet anyway.. any feedback from other areas?.

A JW relative of mine noted that the print was in a larger font. They were able to put that together with the reduction in pages and come to a conclusion that they (the WTS) are suffering the same thing as the major print media companies... people are going digital and that printed periodicals are slowly going extinct. They seemed to grasp the realization that the WTS is not immune. It seemed to be a moment of clarity for them.

As much as I love bad media about JWs this isnt a regular JW issue, this guy is even more of a nut-job than the usual stupid dubs.
But - it does show that being a JW doesn't prevent you from being a stupid idiot, or criminally negligent, or make you a good parent, or even a Christian. For all the WTS claiming that being associated with JWs makes you somehow above the 'world' and it's problems, it's apparent by all the dumb shit you read about JWs in the news, that the opposite is true.

Thanksgiving

The reason it's hard to explain to outsiders was that we couldn't rationalize to ourselves. When it comes to Thanksgiving, birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day and similar innocent holidays, the reason for the WTS to dissuade their followers from celebrating isn't because of paganism, or false religious idolatry... it's to isolate the JWs from the "world". The more they can create a separation between JWs and the world, the more the followers rely on the WT for support in allowing themselves to deny simple pleasures from innocent celebrations. In time, the world and it's holidays are evil, their refusing to join in celebrating becomes righteous.
For religious holidays the WTS is able to point out the "pagan" and "heathen" connections to supposed "christian" holidays, creating a controversy (at least in the minds of their followers) over the holiday. For non-religious holidays, the influence comes from KH talks and assembly parts, and to maybe even a larger extent, word of mouth - or what we could actually call it - peer pressure.
Take Thanksgiving. No real scriptural reason to shun it. No religious reason. No pagan reason. But since it is "worldly" it is beneath Jehovah's people to partake. If left to their own devices, without condemning speech of the holiday, I dare say that most JWs would partake in this holiday. But with the pressure from the platform, and the pressure to conform to the ideals of being a JW, most shun it, even when it goes against their very conscience.
But the WTS does seem to be losing influence. I've noticed that more and more JWs actually partake in Thanksgiving. They refuse to call it that, but they celebrate exactly as the "world" does, including celebrating it with their non-JW family and friends. And they do it without a pang of guilt...they just keep quiet about it and hope they get away with it.
It is a hypocritical stance, in my opinion. I go through this every year with my JW relatives. They're oh so righteous all year, but they conveniently drop their JW guard on this one day so they can associate with the rest of the family and enjoy turkey, ham and pumpkin pie. But come 7:00pm or so, it's back to the self righteousness as they pack it up and head to the KH for the Thursday night meeting.

So I've got JW family members who are going to show up for a large Thanksgiving meal thrown by the non-JW members of the family.
But get this - they can't stay long, they have to go to the Thursday night meeting at the KH, and one of them has a demonstration on the service meeting.

This is a private work and is not associated with the Watch Tower and Tract Society
Any website that is not the official website of Jehovah's Witnesses should not be trusted even if they look to be OK. The Organisation of Jehovah's Witnesses ask brothers not to have their own websites so if they don't, they are actually rebelling against Jehovah.
umm... okaaayyy
I guess "We the Silence" can't be trusted. They're actually rebelling against Jehovah. So they're no better than the people/sites they rail against...

As a kid, I was. Some used to picket the assemblies and I remember our parents grabbing our hands and scurrying as quickly as possible by them, being told to not make eye contact with them.
I remember there was an anti-JW billboard on a highway on the way to the coliseum where some assemblies were held. The adults would distract us kids with some nonsense, so we wouldn't see it, though I secretly looked for it along the way.
As an adult, I didn't give much thought to them... figured they were just disgruntled and unhappy people, blaming Jehovah for their problems. Then a JW in one hall became an apostate. Eveyone talked shit about him, but every interaction I had with him, before and one time after, I knew him to be a smart, reasonable person. At the time I figured he was "too smart" for his own good, not really thinking that through very well (as JWs are wont to do). It was after I got out that I realized that he had allowed his independant thinking lead him to the real truth.
