What TV shows couldn't you watch as a JW Kid?

we had a whole list of shows we were not allowed to watch including 'speed racer', you'll never guess why.

it was beacuse in the theme song it says "he's a demon on wheels" but then my mother was a jw fanatic lol.

Bewitched; I Dream of Jeannie were the biggest of the sitcoms we werent allowed to watch. Munsters, Addams family was ok tho. Twilight Zone was ok. Star Trek was ok cept mom always complained how it taught eveloution. Not allowed to watch crime shows like Mannix, Hawaii 5-0, but Gunsmoke and High Chapparel was ok. Didn't go to the movies much cept for Disney and then it was only the cartoon ones. I remember being forbidden to go see "Bedknobs & Broomsticks"(or sumthin like that). But we saw Snow White(duh, wicked witch).

I remember some brothers being upset about Star Wars and the Force, the jawas, Darth Vader and the Emperor. Something about druidism and pagan influences.

No holiday shows. I didn't see the Grinch till I was in my 30s. Great show.

This is similar to the situation facing a Christian butcher or grocer who must decide whether he can conscientiously sell blood sausage to a worldly person.

JWs can't eat blood. JWs can't smoke either. A store owner cannot sell cigarettes because smoking is wrong. A butcher, on the other hand, can decide whether to sell blood sausage. Why is the butcher allowed to sell something wrong and the store owner isn't?

Hemopure = blood

From my not-so-extensive research, I have learned that Hemopure, a new blood substiture recently labeled as acceptable by the WTS, is made from large amounts of animal blood. If it's made from blood, then it has blood particles in it. If you're gonna adhere to some bible law that says no blood, shouldn't anything that contains blood parts be included? For years the WTS said no blood or parts of blood, including hemoglobin. But now it's okay to use Hemopure or other particles of blood. So which is it? Is blood sacred? Or just parts of it? Just the whole blood? Where is that in the Bible?

Another one of them things that has caused me to lose faith in the whole organization. I know that this has probably already been discussed but I saw this thread at JWZone and it got me to thinking bout it.

What the Mob Could Teach The Watchtower

i was reading an account of the decline of the new york mob in usa today and found some .

parallels with the watchtower.. too much publicity and exposure: the 'teflon don' liked his armani suits and media.

presence - but this intensified the attention his organization received from authorities.. older, wiser leaders ( carlo gambino) realized that keeping a low profile was important.. the end of 'omerta' - mob figures used to maintain a code of silence but this started.

I'm still in my paranoia/conspiracy phase, so I've wondered, if the WTS is more corrupt than most know, could they be "connected"? Anyone ever see Tony Soprano hangin out at Bethel? I know, laugh, but there is so much mob activity in construction and waste management in NYC, how does the WTS manage to do all that they do and not have to deal with them?

I was an MS on two different occasions. Both times I was removed. First time, my time was slipping, I wasn't "into" my duties as much. No counsel, or comfort. No upbuilding talks from the PO. No one asked if I had problems. Just, "we've deciced to remove you." Second time was by the CO. I wasn't residing over my household in a fine manner. A member of my family was privately reproved, but the elders let me remain a MS. When the CO made his visit, reviewed the situation, he had me removed instantly. Because our family study was irregular, that contributed to my family members wrong conduct, thus it was partly my fault, even after the elders said I was not to blame. Go figure.

One thing happened in an elders/MS meeting during one of the CO's visit that has stuck with me. This was before I had doubts or questions. This may be one of the early indications or revelations as to my starting to doubt: He was reading from his prepared outline from the Society and had us read something from the Organization book. The scripture he used and the quote from the Org book was taken completely out of context. What the book was talking about had nothing to do with what the subject of the outline was. It was very obvious to several of us, for after the MSs were excused we discussed it in the parking lot. This and the general way in which the CO treated some of the elders and MSs was so rude. In front of the congregation he was this sweet, nice guy. Tried to be anyway. I thought him to be condescending and fake. But in the elders/MS meetings, he was a real jerk. But I have to thank him. He helped me to open my eyes to the hypocrisy.

Help a lurking dub with doubts

i've been lurking about, checking out some of the evidence against the wtbs.

i am currently inactive but still an approved/baptized member.

i have seen all the 1914/607bce evidence; the blood transfusion quandry evidence; the current child abuse problem evidence and several other things that are damning to the wt doctrines.

Just wanted to say thanks again for all the responses. I see that my feelings are pretty much the norm while trying to get my brain to get a handle on this overload of information. I'm not posting a lot, but I am reading as much as I can. Thanks again.

I remember the last WT study I was at and actually paying attention to what I was reading and what was being commented on(for years I zombied out at the WT study). I don't remember the exact point that the paragraph was trying to make except that it started out by quoting the bible, actually quoting scriptures and citing all the scriptures that applied to make a point. The very next sentence contradicted itself and the bible by saying that while this point was true it was pointless if we did not do whatever the magazine then said. No quotes, no cited scriptures, just what the writer was telling us. I wish I could remember exactly what it was about. I saw with open eyes the contracdiction and the manipulation by this tactic. I'm in a room with over a hundred other people and nobody else noticed it(or if they did, they were keeping quiet, like me). So I think I am slowly starting to deprogram. I can think for myself. I see fault with what is written.

I ran into a friend the other day. An elder from another congregation. He is a great guy. One of the good elders. He did not chastise me for missing meetings or becoming inactive. We just chatted about people and places and old memories. It's the good guys like him that I miss and I wondered just a little, "What if I'm wrong?" If the whole society was made up of people like him, it probably would be more like true Christianity. It's like the post I saw the other day. Three steps forward, one step back. Right now, today, I'm moving forward.

Hey Reborn, You seemed to have worked out a little of that anger that I accused you of having. I see now that you have gone thru what I am now going thru. You're responding to them as you did was good. After all, the elder went on the offensive, not you. But I don't know if it would be good for xjws to verbally attack evey jw they come in contact with unless provoked. I lean to the ole "live and let live" way of thinking unless pushed into a corner. Then you fight back or defend your position as you did. I just bring this up to try to help others to think before ripping into some poor unsuspecting jw standing around a Wal-Mart

Somewhere(another web site, I think) someone brought up the intersting stats of how many who partook of the emblems at the memorial so many years ago compared to today and the stats of those living in 1914 and the rate of how fast they are dying off and that the partakers are not falling at the same rate.(Did I word that to make sense?) Does anyone have that info? As noted earlier the partakers actually went up last year. That's amazing considering that the generation of the last of the anointed is about to die off completely.

Why No Beards?

as i have recently started to question everything i was taught, i started wondering about the grooming "laws".

one that never really made sense to me was that the brothers could not have beards.

where is that written?

Thanks for the link, Spanner. Interesting reading. But out of all that, still no one really knows why the brothers can't have beards. Just dogmatic teaching I guess. To me another piece of evidence that the WTS can't be the true religion. I doubt Jesus worried too much about those things during his ministry.
