i'm a first time poster.

i'm not a jw.

my wife has been a jw for 5 years now.

I think I undrestand where he's coming from. There is a lot of rage and hate on this board. A lot of bullshit too. It's hard to weed thru some the most negative stuff to get to the real issues. There are a lot of sincere people on this board who just want to help others find their freedom from the oppression. Others just want to express their hate and rage. Flaming someone who seems to have a valid question just hurts the validity of anything the flamer would have to say in the future.

It's a free county. If someone wants to be a JW, fine do it. But be forewarned. They are not what they claim they are. Don't look for sympathy from too many here if you decide to become one. It's one thing to be duped, it's another to walk in with open eyes and having knowledge that it is not the true religion. I think he's on the up and up, and is trying to be as objective and fair as possible. What he doesn't know is the pain and hurt one can go thru to get out of the org. I hope he or is wife does not have to go thru that.

No 'worldy' person I have ever met has ever thought the Witnesses were good people. Not one. Ever.

Must not get out much. There is good and bad in every religion, every country, every race, every organization. There are some that I have met that absolutely hate the witnesses. I have met others who commented on what fine people witnesses were. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Some are good people, sincere, honest. Others are no good. Perception is reality, depending on the experience of the one telling the story.

i haven't been in the org for a long time, but it seems that whenever someone sneezes, you are not supposed to say "bless you" ///// why is this so??

i personaly don't see anything wrong w/saying bless you !

Jehovahs Witness Thanksgiving

first i would like to say to all the canadians "happy thanksgiving" !

now for some reason the jw`s don`t celebrate thanksgiving because apparently everyday they thank jehovah and they don`t need a special day.

to me it is a family event and a good excuse to sit down together and relax.. now this gets interesting, my mother always buys a turkey the week after because they are cheaper and has us over for dinner the week after "jehovahs witness thanksgiving"!

I can see the WTS, as an organization or publishing house, or whatever, not endorsing or encouraging any one holiday. It does make sense that if trying to appeal to people from all over the world, that to encourage or endorse a holiday that is observed only in certain countries takes away from that message of unity.

On the other hand, to try to influence followers that certain customs, holidays or observances as unscriptural or unchristian just so as to create an air of superiority or spirituality is just another way of promoting the us vs. them mentality, thus causing the beleivers to think that they are "no part of the world". Thanksgiving is not a pagan holiday. Is it religious? Maybe in the strictest sense in that we are giving thanks to God. To me, it's just a custom of the land. Nothing highly significant about it. Same as Mother's Day and Father's Day. Nothing pagan or religious or even nationalistic about it. But somehow it's wrong. Why? "Just 'cause. They're the world. Their ways are not God's ways". So I guess Super Bowl Sunday is out for "true Christians" too, huh? That has basically become a holiday. It's definately worldly. What about Ground Hog Day? "Oooooo, that's being superstitious." Does anyone really beleive that we can forcast the weather by some furry rodent popping his head out of a hole? Please.

I hafta admit, growing up as a JW, my favorite holiday was Halloween, the worst, most vile, satanic, demonic, anti-christian holiday of em all. The spooky costumes, movies and haunted houses were just too cool. Too bad I didn't get to enjoy it as a kid.

Hi trybalance,

I know several people like you, who come to the hall with their families but never become a JW. They are usually some of the most normal, well-adjusted people you will meet. A lot of JWs are fanatical. A lot are on the fringe(cause they have family in and they don't wanna lose that relationship) and some(but not the majority) are just normal folks who think their religion is right. You are fortunate that you have not been indoctrinated into their belief system. You have a strong will and can think for yourself. That's not to say that your wife doesn't but somewhere along the way she felt something missing(spritually speaking) and the JWs came along at the right time.

My father never was a JW. But he allowed my mother to raise us kids as JWs. He came to meetings once in a while and he came to the picnics. The friends all liked him and fortunately they never pressured him. The fact that he was good to his wife and kids was good enough for them, I guess(that and he allowed her to contribute freely). He was so much more objective and reasonable in his reasonings, debates or arguments than any witness I ever met. He wasn't smarter. He just wasn't brainwashed.

For those of us who went thru the awakening(no pun intended), the denial, the mental anguish of realizing that you have lived your whole life on a belief that is not true and trying to cope with that new knowledge causes different reactions. Some are angry, some are hurt and depressed and some are just plain relieved. I personally am not angry, but I see many here who are. I don't think that the anger helps the exJW cause any. I came to this board to learn more about what had been hidden from me my whole life. And I hope that as I come to grips with these issues, I will not need to come here to convince myself that I am doing the right thing or to bash others who choose to be a JW or complain about what the JWs do, but move on with my life and let go of the bad things of the past.

You are a reasonable, intelligent person who allows his wife her freedom to worship as she chooses, and who is content with himself. You are obviously secure in your relationship with her and in your place in life. For that you can be thankful. For many here the rug has been pulled out from under them.

but out of the several translations that i read i don't see where it says it was their birthday being celebrated.

the closest thing i saw was that it said "on their day".

Your headline made me laugh. I heard a talk last year on a local needs about christian language. The same ole stuff, cussin is bad, but this brother went into some detail about the origins of a lot of the things people say. Gee, golly, crikey, blimey, geez and a bunch of others I can't remember. By the time the talk was over, it was clear that we could not use any euphamisms at all. None. Nada. I was surprised that he didn't condemn "goodbye"(God be with you). We went around for days saying "Crikey" just cause we thought is was funny.

Reading through this thread brought a question to mind. Why, after having left the WT, do we expend so much of our lives researching WT teachings? From the post that I have read it seems that many, like myself, have been away from the WT for many, many years. At what point do we get beyond the WT? At what point do we allow ourselves to not be consumed with WT issues?

Excellant question(s).

I have on recently started to learn many of the things that a lot of you already know. But I have wondered why so many spend so much time researching the same things over and over. Are they still trying to convince themselves they are correct? Do they have doubts? Or they sincere in trying to help others see thru the lies and hypocrisy? I think there are some of both. I hope that when I have gotten this all straight in my head, I can move on and not need to harp on what the WTS does anymore.

From the Bible we must conclude that if conception is accomplished with the sperm and an egg not from husband and wife, it would amount to adultery or fornication.

Huh??

I thought adultery and fornication were sex acts outside of the marriage bonds. There is no sex involved in the procedures described. And how can you conclude this from the Bible? The Bible doesn't say that anywhere.

While there are ethical and religious dilemas in these procedures, accusing someone of sexual infidelity due to having this procedure goes beyond what is common sense.
